I love the Guilty Ones, and I understand why this was cut. However, it is incredibly symbolic to the relationship between Melchior and Wendla. Wendla is the innocent madien searching for love, Melchior is the pirate who kept searching for knowledge and answers so much that he unwittingly had people hurt along the way.
This is the only post of this song that I've heard that actually has both Jon and Lea singing. Thanks for posting! I wish they would release a studio version with them on iTunes. This song is so cool.
I love how this song almost like talks about what was going to happen to them, how they were going to be separated, besides that awesome eerie tone is spectacular.
This is better than TGO, in my opinion. It's much more symbolic (the ocean, the storm, the violets, the willows) and I think that TGO is much more upfront about its subject. Plus, I like haunting tone to this and how high Jonathan Groff can go :D
i like the guilty ones. and i really like this song. i think if this song was just included in the show too it definately would have been even more amazing.
@bwaybaby333 It's much more symbolic. You'll recall that later in the play, Ilsa reminisces with Moritz about how they all used to play pirates as children. This song is evocative of lost innocence.
Lea + Jonathan in this song = amazing. Love how the "pirates" concept relates to Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind, which is the next song in the show. ("remember how we used to run back to my house and play pirates? Wendla Bergmann, Melchior Gabor, you, and I?")
i really love the guilty ones, it's my fave song from the show, but i wish they had managed to fit this in somehow... i've seen it twice, but in la, so i didn't get to see them sing this. i listen to this song alot...
oh my word, I wish they would have kept it and just added in guilty ones!!! The end picture is beautiful, the song fits well with the show, and it's gorgeously haunting!
I just wish they would've recorded a soundtrack version with Jonathan Groff. *Sigh* But it's still an awesome track :P

and they need to release this version of this song, and the national touring cast's version of a comet on its way.

i like the guilty ones better as an act 2 opener, however, i LOVE this song and think they should've worked it in somehow.

@AliaSparrow I think Moritz could be the pirate as well..refuses to "go under the sea"

its a beautiful song, but it doesn't convey the same message as the guilty ones. a very important message to convey in the show.

OMG you have this....I have just wanted to see this for so long and never really though I could find it...you are amazing for this!

They should've left this one here, and placed Guilty Ones instead of Whispering (I think GO works better than Whispering).

@IWillBeHers oh god i love whispering. i think the show would be missing a huge part of wendla if that song wasn't there.

The adult men

Did they eventually cut this song out? It is performed by Duncan Sheik on the soundtrack not anyone on cast.
Sorry I've never seen the show.

yeah they replaced it with the guilty ones
