  • If the base chords at 1:35 don't send shivers down your spine there is something wrong with you! Amazing!

  • Is it me or does it sound like a metronome in the background?

  • @ImmortalSpecies POKEMON!

  • @ImmortalSpecies don't think so , no

  • I am a huge Richter fan, however this performance finds him below par in my opinion. Somewhat splashy and untidy at times with the dramatic bars being dis-proportionately loud.

  • @meredith218461 Consider that it was 1988 or 1989 when Richter was in his seventies.

  • so many wrong notes. wtf

  • I do NOT find this flat in any respect. Just because a performance doesn't correspond exactly with your preconceived ideas,,,Do NOT blame the performer,,,especially of this calibre.. There is immense "feeling" in this,,,and if you cannot "feel" it,,,,,,,look to yourselves. I have just played the versions of half a dozen splendid performers,,,,and enjoyed each. Forget the partisan approach.

  • This sounds similar to how it sounds when I practice the piece. Usually, I'm a big fan of Richter, but I was kind of disappointed by this. It seemed all too dry. I prefer Hammelin's interpretation.

  • @aguyfromtexas Thats odd, cause I was thinking exactly the same thing, in regards to Hammelin. Also may i suggest you check it out Hammelins version again, as there is now a better HQ version!

  • Incredible, almost gentle "sigh" by this commanding figure, notably around 3 min.

  • Richter's playing in this recording seems very flat and shows zero emotion whatsoever.

I like Kathryn Stott and Cziffra playing this piece in which they show complete imagery of fantasy and emotion unlike this recording of Richter's performance here.

  • @mombeekmarcel haha you still deaf i told you to go get your ears syringed but you did'nt listen!

  • @mombeekmarcel "like always with richter" lol wut?

  • @mombeekmarcel You are an idiot. Richter is the greatest pianist of all time. Rubinstein said "Richter was a genious who just happened to play the piano". Listen to him playing debussy pagodes or Gnomenreigen

  • I prefer my favourite Cziffra, playing this type of repertory.

  • The bass chords at 1:35 sounds like atomics bombs... Richter is amazing!

  • I'd suggest it's live, very well recored and obviously it was not flu season. But he was slipping around on the keys and would not have approved it as a studio recording.....BTW the lovely little Lisztisms that Arrau adds are absent from this edition, which is correct?

  • The 'Lisztisms' didn't arise Arrau's mind.

Liszt wrote three variations for the extension of the cadenza: The one Arrau plays, Liszt added in 1875 for his student Auguste Rennebaum.

There is also one for Professor Henrik Gobbi and one for his student Lina Schmalhausen.

Besides, Liszt also wrote down a mystically hovering conclusion, which Arrau performs unlike Richter.

These extensions are all included in the score by Editio Musica Budapest.

  • Thanks for the info, I had the same doubt

  • GREAT!!!

  • I maintain my words, it's what I feel...Good you you're a fan of him...I'm interested in discussing about what you feel, not about so-called obituary or kind of a god veneration...that's useless ....

  • @brunoparis12 I agree. This is certainly not Richter's best playing. A late recording, I would imagine.

  • I am not convinced by his performance, distant, "flately" playing without sculpturing, no sound "concept" (he never had and was not interested in)...Moreover I do not feel where he is going to.... this piece has been played in so many ways with much more "instinct" and intentions (for instance Arrau, Lamond, Hamelin, Bauer....to quote a few here on YT)

  • Here's a good quote for you from his obituary. "Richter was not a virtuoso in the flamboyant sense of parading his talent to dazzle an audience; instead he required from his listeners an act of intense concentration to match his own incomparable approach to the music. Those who could not summon this were apt to grow restless during his performances...even became bored..."

  • In a way, I find the "flatness" of his playing admirable, considering technical difficulties of the pieces. At least it was even throughout. I do agree though, Hamelin's interpretation was much more "coloured" and he displayed a good balance of technical ability and articulate awareness simultaniously.

  • Oh Gods...The opening melody peals out like bells. It's so beautiful.

I've always loved Richter's playing, "klinkers" and all.

  • Enjoy this one...

    watch?v=Wzha-5kcXcs&feature=related

    ... simply marvelous.

  • I wonder if this was a studio recording or a live performance. Richter was known to let a few klinkers get released from his performances.

  • Richter incredible artist and mind...THE BEST !!

  • i like Hamelin's better.. but this is still good

  • the most beautifull interpretation of this piece

  • yeah that was goood :D

  • A bit messy for Richter in parts.

  • Troll.

  • lol Richters on fire here!!!both in looks and playing~! hawt hawt hawt :D

  • hehe.

  • pufs he have 3 hands... no is human I think! is incredible awesomee!

  • For me, Ritcher is THE God of piano. However, this time I prefer Van Cliburn. Could you tell me in which year this recital took place? Thank you for posting it.
