@peavy82 : I think they reffer only to the times when Phil played this song both vocals&piano. Otherwise, he certainly played the song more than once in 23 years:)
@CatalinPop Yes, you're right, I didn't pay much attention to what it says in the brackets (play & sing). Anyway it's a hard song to sing both on vocals and on piano in the key of D flat but he did a pretty good job!
His voice is still genius, his tone is still there. What he has lost is the ability to hit the notes on "there's nothing LEFT HERE" and "BACK TO ME," which are insanely hard notes to hit for a male of any ability, non falsetto.
Whatever, it's still endearing to me. They say an artist suffers for his art, and there's something painfully beautiful about the way he "hits" those notes at this age.
After watching the Live Aid video and then this one, it's almost criminal to see Phil's vocal power decline. There were probably 3 challenging notes for him in '85. Now - you can see that when he sang this song, he may have been pushing the edge of his vocal envelope. It's sad but inevitable, I guess.
I'm so shocked... He's so lovable. And this is SUCH an amazing song. considering he (according to the description) hasn't played it in 20 years (let alone listened to it possibly), I can understand the lyrics flub...but I'm surprised his voice isn't what it used to be. Do anyone know any artists that can maintain voice quailty with age?
Wow. He recorded it, hit ONE wrong key at Wembley, and he never played it again? I just saw that video for the first time (Wembley) and commented on how he just smiled through it, and how lovely that was. I guess it really bothered him...enough to not sit at the piano for it again anyway. That's too bad.
I just posted my interpretation of Nocturne opus 9 ,No.2. I would appreciate your comments. Please click on my link 'alfonsopablo' next to this comment to listen.
@DogSwede1 In concert, he has - but he never learned how to play it in it's lower key (it's already in such a weird key!), so here he is, playing it how he wrote it again. (With less screaming!)
@elipper That's right. His piano playing is more memorizing where to put his fingers than anything, so a key change messes him up. For someone who never "properly learned" how to play he's incredibly proficient.
Whaouh what an amazing song. I've been listening to this ever since i was a kid and still not bored of it.That is back in the days when there was real talent. Unfortunately those days are long gone. Look at all the singers today.... they will be forgotten in a few years. Phil you are a rare true talent. Thanks for all the years of great songs you offered us.
His voice is like an angel, reaching into me, and grabbing hold where no one else has ever been. His countenance like a bridge between soul and spirit. he is the greatest love of sound i ever knew, not because he is master of all highs and lows, but because of what drives him to write and to deliver just so. oh that he were a vagrant, and i could just sit and listen to him night and day, without the intrusion of money, work, or world. No one else moves me this way, Phil Collins.
Collins DID play it more than just three times... Two times at Live Aid, when he wrote it and he played it at least one more time. No tickets required show.
@usenameinvalid uhh, the No Jacket Required Tour was before Live Aid. It is heavily documented that Phil played the CP70 piano on his NJR Tour, accompanied w/ his band.
When Phil says "I played it twice," he really meant solo in front of an audience. After that, he lost his confidence in playing the song all together, so he no longer plays keyboard in it.
Personally, I like this in the original key. Phil changed it way too much over the years, to include a sax, an extended vocal outro, etc.
all the live shows, all the hit's...the millions of fans, the deafening roars of the crowd..Genesis..Solo..Disney contracts..happy kids that grew up on the songs, an Officer and a Gentlemen..romance..loss..Life..poor, hungry for it, some money, more money, up coming band of the 80's..favorite artist, MTV, awards, shows, live aid..solo.. limousines,..household name.. AND ALL SHE HAS TO DO IS **CK HIS DICK TO GET A JUDGE TO AWARD HER WHAT SHE SO FUCKING DESERVES?. 25MILLION Welcome to real life.

You can see the piano errors in the youtube vid of Live Aid. But that doesn't. matter. This very moving. I'll always love Phil Collins. He is now old but he's still pure gold! :D
You said he only ever played and sang this 3 times. Twice in one day for Live Aid and when he wrote it. I found a video of him singing and playing this in Dallas and he nails it.
@norskyver thats not true...he has sang it live more than 3 times...and ok well he didnt prepare him self for this intiomate performance...listen to him live and even now he can nail it just had to learn it again...still godd performer

he is just not giving it his all, he is one of the rare artists who is lucky enough to still have most of his voice left...unlike the elton johns etc. just watch his version of this 2 years earlier in paris...big sound system behind and he still has it.
@sunnyviewmusic Yeah, exactly....2 years ago. A lot happens to a body in 2 years, especially as you get older. Listen, I'm a huge Phil Collins fan. I know his every raise of the eyebrow, his every body movement, and his every facial expression...You can tell he's struggling thru this.
Ok sir...you are obviously not a singer or you would know exactly what I mean...he has nothing on his voice and it is not amped at all...he can either go hard out and risk it sounding crap with out the gear behind him or he can go into falsetto. I met phil back in Feb...and that is NOT 2 years ago...I'm not saying he sounds the same as the 80s but he can stil get the notes with ease if he wants to.
he sounds like more like his self on this. i would of said after the we cant dance album he started to lose his range. later on he sounded like he was on helium.
He MUST have played it much more than a few times. There is video on you tube of him playing this song live on his No Jacket Required tour. So I would assume he played it for every show on that tour.
@smarsey Well he "played" it, but he had backing piano, which you can see from the NRJ video, so he didnt play the head parts like in the Live Aid performance.
I'd have to agree. One of the most underrated musicians there is. So many years of great music, he deserves recognition and I think a spot in the hall of fame.
there's nothing that will ever change about his performances, absolute greatness even as age takes over. Graceful performance, some great quality will always shine through

@RabbitWonderful GOD has not given unto any other artist; what HE has given unto phil collins, may this gift live forever with this legend...............
There is something that tugs at the heart seeing him like this, with all his past hits/concerts/fame, singing in this stripped down way. Like coming full circle.
I'm begging to get into the studio with him!!! Not for money or fame...just the chance of a lifetime to sit next to such talent and sing. I love Phil!

Raw and beautiful.
There is something that tugs at the heart seeing him like this, with all his past hits/concerts/fame, singing in this stripped down way. Like coming full circle.

could you post this entire interview? I would love to see all of it and not just the bit where he sings.
