This is a good example of her creative genius. The 'pop' or watered down sound we say Columbia gave her was sometimes her own doing. She often instructed the musicians and singers (with Mildred's help) how she wanted them to play and at what pace and swing!! Listen to the Stars of Faith version of this hymn and it's not as swinging as Mahalia's... Sister Woman was in a class by herself!!! PERIOD!
Mahalia always did that somehow; she always gave hymns, spirituals and gospel songs a 'hip' touch. Many critics attribute that gift to her birthplace - New Orleans. She could swing with the best of them and this is a classic example.
it would have been cool to have mahalia sing with james cleveland on organ, mildred falls on piano, rosetta thrape on guitar or even have a duet with ella fitzgerald
That would have been nice. I am sure James played for her in his younger days on her church tours. I would really love to see a duet with her and Rosetta... what a pairing! LOL! Very nice contrast. Ella and Mahalia would make a beautiful duet...two very warm voices...dynamic talents.
I've been watching this video over and over for four year. I will never get tired of this.
