If the 13 colonies in 1776 were fighting for their freedom, why did they all condone slavery and later recognize it in the US Constitution? If the 13 colonies in 1776 were fighting for their freedom, why did they all condone slavery and later recognize it in the US Constitution? If the SOuth was fighting for slavery, does that mean that the north was fighting against it? Why was the original 13th amendment which took the slavery issue off of the table by making it a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT for the slaves states passed by the US House and Senate after SC and the deep South seceeded? Now why didn't The Emancipation Proclamation free slaves in a state where Lincoln (as the recognized president) could have made it stick? You stink of hypocrisy and ignorance.

Someone can tell Professor Livingston it is normal etiquette to market related books at the end, not the start of a lecture. While it was not 'unconstitutional' for a state to secede from the Union, it was "unconstitutional" for the South because of it's "tradition', to justify or institutionalize slavery because it supported the local economy. The legal argument against slavery is much clearer than the Southern "tradition" that Livingston repeatedly refers to, without explanation.

There are some interesting pieces of info in this lecture. Thanks for posting. However, many of the Livingston's points are weakly supported. Some are merely opinion. Also, he reveals his prejudices as he speaks. (Segment 3 of 11, min. 5:50 for example: A joke about all immigrants lying around watching TV and being on welfare. We know the type of person that thinks this way).
I generally distrust and dislike the speaker, but am thankful for hearing some new info & points of view.

It's ashame that my two Children are never taught how things really were in their History lessons at School.
