  • The best drummer..

  • top form!

  • @kingchrist100 No he's not.

  • Dude ur right vinnie can be simple. But we must not over look he technical genius. He is very skilled just as much as Dave weckl or Dennis and was an influence to both those guys early on. Get a hold of the stuff he has did out side of this and that stuff is very hard to play.

  • Is the guitarist either:

    a) Mark Lizotte,

    b) Johnny Depp, or

    c) one of the dudes from Tears for Fears?

  • @rawdonwaller It's Michael Hutchence. Everyone thinks it's Dominic Miller. :D

  • @rawdonwaller it's the dude from TFF

  • @kingchrist100 the guy from Rush has a name: Neil Peart, but I think there's no such thing as "a better drummer... " *especially at these levels) drummers are not cars....

  • @kingchrist100 what about terry bozzio

  • @keelef Bozzio is on record as saying Vinnie is the best drummer in the world

  • I've been drumming since I was a toddler, and as I musician, Stewart Copeland has been a huge influence on my style. He has had a unique childhood growing up in the Middle East and hearing and incorporating the Arabic rhythms into his style. Vinnie is just simply sick! I agree with @aurelio1204 that his style is very simple yet elegant and mesmerizing. I have written many times that Sting always surrounds himself with exceptional yet simple musicians.

  • @REALTORJeero Vinni e is the least simple drummer on the planet...he is knoown as the most out there master of polyrhythmic excess...check holdsworth , jeff beck and Herbie Hancock

  • yes....

  • @kingchrist100 not as great as stewart copeland!

  • you are kidding

  • @kingchrist100 You are joking, right

  • Undoubtedly, they are among the few musicians who really feel true music!

  • there aren't many drummers I'd settle for seeing with sting besides stewart copeland, but vinnie def falls into that catagory. I must see vinnie live in person before I die!

  • Vinnie Colaiuta owns!!!

  • I cant explain how much I hate sting. Despite Sting's shittiness, Vinnie rocks.

  • @SupremeChimp Sting's at least as good at what he does as Vinnie is.

  • @woutertron where what sting does is being sexy, and vinnie being an immensely talented musician ... you're probably right. Vinnie wasnt blessed with the hair or bone structure that sting has.

If you're saying Sting is a talented singer/bassist on the level that Vinnie is a drummer ... then no, you're just silly. Both of them make it work.

Wasn't trying to hate on sting, just saying that even as someone who doesn't dig his stuff, this video is cool because vinnie is so good.

  • @SupremeChimp What Sting does is being an incredibly talented composer, lyricist, singer and multi-instrumentalist. There's a reason he's still around and popular after 30 years. He has an incredibly diverse, yet timeless repertoire which very few recording artists can match. He's far from being just a pretty face. If you asked Vinnie I'd wager he'd admit to being completely in awe of Sting (just as I'm sure the reverse is true).

  • @woutertron Still not trying to get in an e-battle with sting fangirls. I just think hes a tool and sucks.

  • @SupremeChimp Well calling me a "fangirl" certainly helps, though I'm not trying to get into an "e-battle" either. Obviously I don't expect everyone to like Sting but my point is that to deny his obvious skills and talent is as silly denying those of Vinnie.

  • @woutertron Cool, but Sting is a better actor than he is a musician, in my humble and subjective opinion.

  • @SupremeChimp still a great bass player, singer, and song writer regardless of what you think of his personality

  • @621Kershaw ...Although Vinnie is a fantastic drummer music is first of all an art my friend. After all the original ideas for this song is Copeland's.

  • kudos to the audience at this show!!

  • Que bestias por Dios! no pueden tocar tanto...

  • this is history man!!!!

  • Anyone that says Vinnie is a clown has no clue what they are talking about! Ive seen Copeland play live a few times, and never have I ever seen him play anything close to as tight as this. Vinnie is easily one of the most talented drummers of our time.

  • I`m sorry I said Your Mamas cooking SUX.BUT I stand by my statement.HOEBAG.

  • @flymarvin ....ok marvin....marvin? LOL....if the small yellow school bus fits, you wear it

  • @flymarvin ....so what drug are you on............Vinnie a clown?.....you are such a retard

  • @flymarvin Copeland is great, as Colaiuta is. Both are great. Colaiuta is probably the most versatile drummer.

  • that left hand of vinnies! you can almost hear the swissh as he wips it down!

  • Check this out; at 5:22 the last 'Roxanne', when Vinnie goes off on one, the first two tom hits match Sting's note change... Listen carefully.

  • @Philzwhodrumz interesting haha

  • Whaaat Purple Haze?!?

  • My favorite song and wonderful drummer... Vinnie Coliauta is amazing.

  • The two people disliked this are just a straight up haters. There is nothing to dislike about this!

  • What a great concert vid. I taped it off the tv years ago, and every time I see it I can't believe the musicality of those 4 guys. All such different players and personalities, but what an ensemble. Great tunes, too, of course. Vinnie frickin' rocks!

  • If you want to hear some of Vinnie's unbelievable playing, check out Joe's Garage when Vinnie was playing with Frank Zappa.

  • Saw this concert in Heidelberg, Germany back in 1991. Sting and the boys tore the hall to pieces that night.

  • anywhere to download this song?!

  • dominic always looking like the druggie, with that far off look in his eyes.

  • yeah..vinnie have his own tyle, free as he can play..but copeland made roxane style.. saw his performance at 1979, awesome !!

copeland n vinnie is a good drummer (punk/reggae vs. jazz )

  • Ha, some interesting new ingredients to an old recipe. Colauta, Miller and Roxanne. Wonderful version.

  • Vinnie....An Absolute inspiration to ALL Drummers

  • Domin9ic Miller on guitar?

    On drums Paul Brochu forever!!!

  • @maxxxx1972 Dom Miller from Argentina is on guitar and he is really a great compliment to Sting's bass. David Sancious also plays guitar and keyboard very well. It's Vinnie Colaiuta that's the drummer and his star has been rising a long time and I hope it continues. World's best drummer.

  • @PinkPrism008 thanks, the only musician i had doubt about was Dominic.

I kno very well Colaiuta through the jazz-fusion music.

i dn't know if is the best (Dave Weckl?).

Anyway i like very much Paul Brochu from UZEB.

  • this perfromance is better than studio record

  • VINNIE = GOD

  • Long Live Vinnie Colaiuta!

  • that is SRV!

  • to be truly honest Vinnie is the best drummer Sting ever worked with...miles in the sky better than stewart copeland...he is ok like all rock drummers but Vinnie is treasure

  • Vinnie is the best, but you can tell that even the best (and the best "technician") forgets how to drive a song. In particular you don't hear much buildup in the phrasing. Perhaps it's just too simple for Vinnie...

Sorry to be so cruel :)

  • Fill at 2.04..Vinnie's magic

  • hey guys this is not vinnie colaiuta playing on this video, defenitly sure!!

this is and always been stewart copeland!!

  • @djangoboogie74 that is vinnie all the way.If it was Stu it would 10 be clicks faster!

  • @mrthundaboots your all right mate!

    it's a mistake, sorry!!

  • sure, and it's my mother on guitar!

  • I love copeland dont get me wrong, but vinnie kills it here.

  • sting rockin that dub groove. what a balllllllah.

  • I think the point is all you need is Sting and some good back up players, the chicks in the crowd could care less if Andy and Stu weren't there!

  • Vinnie and Copeland are a very diferents drummers, Vinnie has more technic. Hes not copying to Copeland, hes just playing the song with some original arregements

  • Vinnie and David on the same stage, really liked this arrangement.

  • Theyre both badasses. This is just a great song.

  • POWER!!!

  • holly shitt

  • Now who plays this better...Stew cuz he was the original, or Vinnie cuz he is so F'ing GOOD!!!???? Thoughts?

  • in jazz terms, Copeland is better on this song, as is Andy Summers, though the guitarist here is a consumate professional

  • there are certain fills where Vinnie copies Stew and in my opinion Stewart's feel on those specific things is better. But that's totally subjective

  • Agreed. Both are two of the best 8-10 drummers alive. I prefer Stew's ear/musicality. Vinnie may have more technical chops, but there's something magical about the way SC plays on Police songs.

  • Vinnie the one...

    amazing performance

  • oh my god....this is groove!!!!

    Mr Vinnie Colaiuta......WOW

  • its in 4 actually

  • Nah it felt unusal cuz Vinnie does really play on the 1. And disguise it sssuuuppperrr well.

  • Stewart Copeland is great as well wen it comes to this kinda music but vinnie really blows him away even in his own song

  • i dont think so. vinnie did an amazing job, but stewarts beat is just so amazing on this song.

  • @master1sa myb hes just tryin to keep it on the low not to upset stewart copeland, but dont get me wrong i luv stewarts's drumming

  • Vinnie makes the drums sound beyond the term 'perfect'. His simplicity is delivered as a feast, and with extreme elegance, such that there's no excess and no conformism.

  • @aurelio1204

    well said!

  • @aurelio1204

Well Put, could've of said it better

  • i went to a police concert, only knowing this song, and it was still probably the best concert ive ever been to, such an amazing live show, such amazing music, even when hearing it for the first time, with vinnie or copeland, theyre awesome

  • I love how Vinnie can play so simple in this song, but be able to play a shuffle in 9/8. He is so versatile.

  • What's great about vinnie is that he can play an incredibly complicated hi-hat pattern... and still make people dance

  • Comment removed

  • Master drumming here!!

  • Colaiuta ESTLO PROPIO! Grande !

  • Btw, the one guy who approaches Stewart Copeland's hi-hat work is Omar Hakim, who worked with Sting early on. Check him out.

  • Vinnie owns.

  • 2:02 Yeaaaahhh

  • Purple Haze

  • OMG very beautiful

waht s the name of the 2nd song?!!!

  • OMG don't you know?!

  • great drinking song

  • sounds awsome!!

  • Jeeez! This is a sick fucking groove! Wow!

  • vinnie's 2&4 are nice a loud and make this song groove even more

  • I think they're ever-so-slightly syncopated from the original, and that (together with the hard backbeat, as you point out) causes the outrageous swing on "Roxanne."

  • Purple Haze surprised the shit out of me. Too bad it's not all up.

Vinnie is THE most capable drummer I've heard in a while. Latin, Jazz, Rock, Odd Time Signatures, and weird Latin Ostinato beats I'd never really heard. It's cool to be able to listen to him.

  • @wulord you bet, and what really suprised me, dave mustaine got him to do a megadeth album, greatest drummer of all time in my eyes

  • @wulord "In a while"!? ;)

  • roxaaaaaana puta

  • la mejor banda que aya logrado conformar el señor sting en toda su carrera..¡¡¡¡¡¡ colaiuta y sting..¡ perfect...¡¡¡¡

  • y THE POLICE?

  • SO SEXY OH....

  • ROOOOOOOOOOXAAANNE! Way to go, Sting & Vinnie!! :D

  • Agreed.

He's the first drummer I really ever paid attention to.

That's saying something, too, because Sting is quite a distraction. ;]

  • I like his very tight grooves and his hihat things a lot...stylewise of course.

  • vinnie colaiuta, best drummer ever ithink, peaple who listen realy good to music where vinnie is playing on know where i'm talking about, anyway, totally awesome performence!!!

  • I wonder why the drum part of roxanne was never performed live as it was on the record, neither the police nor sting did.... but still good performance, anything Vinnie plays is good enough.

  • Vinnie is one of the best drummers that has played with Sting. Great drummer

  • Maestro's sting and Vinnie!!

  • Sting - Soul Cages

  • Its a clip from "The Soul Cages" concert from like 89 or 90

    David Sancious - Keys

    Dominic Miller - Gtr

    Vinnie Colauita - Drums

    Sting.....

I found it on Amazon...... Amazing VHS !

  • why copeland wasnt there?

  • I'm not a fan of sting's arrangements from old police songs but imo, THAT version is mind blowing!

  • at 5.55 the guitar man looks awfull like stevie ray vaughan ...

  • sir, no offense to you too. But for me, it's the self explanation or self interpretation of the song that counts. Yes, your right copeland did that song very good because he's the original drummer of that song. but for colaiuta, he can do that also what copeland did. but, it's not colaiuta anymore, are you getting me sir?

    Self Interpretation sir, nothing more.

  • Dude are kidding, Copeland is for sure a hell of a drummer and Roxanne's drums has his signature but you can't deny colaiuta's talent, less versatil than Copelands but sharp and chirurgically precise. He's a medic while Copeland would be a gourou.

  • I have no idea what chiccoturbo just said. Nevertheless, what zal01 said is ridiculous. This version is excellent -- they don't sound exactly like The Police and nor should they. "Homoginized"? I don't know what that means. I hear Sting, Colaiuta doing it his way, and Dominic playing essentially what Andy played.

  • i'm sure you would've played it much better. now go jack off to your glen sobel vids punter.

  • i'm shitting on colaiuta's ability man, relax, but seriously it just doesn't measure up. some drummers just cannot be emulated

  • And why should colaiuta emulated copeland?! They are both huge drummers, but Colaiuta is way more requested to record, play live, etc...

  • *emulate

  • If anybody has seen the most recent live police dvd, you would definately agree that colaiuta is better. Something happened in that 20 year break... It could have also been though that sting was mapping out stewart every move.

  • It's not dripping with Copeland's swing because he isn't Copeland. Plus I think you'll find that Sting pretty much dictated how Vinnie should groove.

As a musician I think Vinnie is doing a superb job here, no doubt much more elegantly than anyone other than Stuart Copeland could.

Anyone read Vinnie's latest interview in Drummer Magazine (in the UK)? He's much more than just a drummer.

  • guys guys . Sure u cant compare drummers like copeland and colaiuta ! Copeland is THE drummer for Roxanne, but colaiuta can tell him STORIES over STORIES about drumming. No offense, but Vinnie is the freakin POPE one the drum set and his work with Sting was pue PERFECTION (im quite a fan of him mysel lol )

  • Vinnie is the man!

  • whoa, wasnt expecting Purple Haze there at 5:44

  • Oh I remember this. The Soul Cages concert. I was blown away when I saw David Sancious get on guitar! And Vinnie, what can I say? He's the man!

  • Maestoso Vinnie..il fill che fa a 2:03 è incredibile..

  • I totally agree with you!! Excellent observation and comparison with the movie ! I like that :-).

  • where is this taken from?

a dvd? i really want this one :)

  • man McGyver sings like Sting!! LOL

  • Vinnie is far better than Stewart Copeland... pardon me if you're offended

  • vinnie is one of the best drummers around..but no one can play police like copeland

  • wow.... is this available on a DVD?

  • umm, me thinks no...

  • oooooooh this is so groovy!

2:03 probably the most powerful and enjoyable drum fill I ever heard!

    Pure talent!

  • Wow, I feel sorry for you.

You obviously haven't heard a lot of drum fills, have you?

  • You see my friend I've heard tons of drum fills in my life. And I enjoy a lot more a simple drum fill that is exatly what is needed than showoff, hardcore and impossible-to-make fills. Anyway, who are you to judge other people's tastes?

  • Sorry Dominic David killed you with that solo on the Hendrix song!!!!you still my dog though!!!

  • I love how Sting can put out the energy for the crowd to get some audience participation, and it just carries on for the rest of the show.

  • that must be the greatest feeling in the world to have all that people jumping has you play the dopest groove ever!

  • as*

  • Very true!

  • what show is this?

  • Sting's the soul cages tour : den haag 1991

  • sting is a fucking genius!

  • I think stewart copeland does it better for this song.

  • Stewart is Stewart, Vinnie is Vinnie, end of story.

  • Rodgebi, Amen Brotha!!

  • yea

  • Vinnie or the highway.....'nuff said...

  • He played 10 years for Sting . . . and Sting wanted to keep him, but he just did some further studio work for him... this vid is AWSOME ( check all the Sting summoner's travels )

  • Oh man but it's in fast forward when they start playing purple haze and has no sound!

  • A mi me pasó lo mismo, me quería matar.

  • No shit, Vinnie was on tour with Sting

  • thats funny

  • Vinnie is awesome....!!
