"Good guy jack", "not even a ticking bobm scenario". Yeah, and I can take random clips from Bambi promoting torture and nuking of small babies too. Jack isnt a "good guy", he is a hard boiled person who does anythign to get what he needs done, done. In this case he need to save a life. The guy they almost torture there is evil and will be dead in days, and in an attempt to save an innocent life he was prepared to do that.
Ummm does y'all even watch this show? 1. Jack is often of questionable morals, Sydney is the heroine we are meant to identify with, and she is often mad at/ scolding/ ignoring her father because of his poor decisions. 2. Jack was undercover (i.e. pretending to be evil).
I can't remember much from way back in Season Two but this was still the days of SD-6 where Jack was deep undercover, and had to maintain the trust of the sociopathic Arvin Sloane, whom he knows is going to torture the guy eventually.
Jack Bristow does lots of morally questionable things throughout the series, but the show was always using that character to explore the ethical grey areas of such actions to heighten the drama, and never outright condoned his darker moments, e.g.; framing Irina.
how very un-evolved of you, and sad. Nothing you do will change the suffering of those you love. Nothing I do would have changed it either. And those who are tortured rarely want anyone to experience that - even those who did them harm.
i'm sorry for what happened to your family memeber. i don't know the situation but i'm sure they did not deserve what happened to them.
having said that, that will not change the fact that if someone kills my father, rapes my sister, i'm gonna want retribution that the courts can't give. i will want to harm this person.....repeatedly
When the characters representing "justice" or the "good guys" use or advocate torture that is a promotion of it. In this case Jack knows Sloan will torture the guy and he even suggests that he do so. Get it?
How many episodes of Alias have you seen? Jack isn't "a good guy" he's a majorly protective father and a "loyal" nationalist, but in no way is he the "good guy" or "hero". He believes in saving the innocent or whatever but he's never gone about it in a morally acceptable way. He is a very ends justify the means person and those people are never painted as the "hero"
@largemoose It doesn't promote torture the person who posted this is probably one of those same idiots who thinks that Jack Bauer dictates how our Millitary acts .
Moral ambiguity is a heck of a lot more realistic than laser guns and tribbles. This isn't "promoting torture" or painting *anyone* as a hero. Unfortunately, torture is a reality, unlike the idealized universe of Star Trek. I'm not even sure what you're talking about - I just came here to watch an Alias clip - but if being a Star Trek fan means sticking my head in the sand about terrible acts lurking within the human condition that *deserve* to be addressed... then I'm glad I'm not one.
That's what I'm saying. Just because it's present, doesn't mean that it's being promoted. Unless this is the Frank Miller version of Star Trek, I doubt they're going to play a torture scene as something pleasant and admirable. Part of modernizing it is acknowledging the current controversial climate concerning military behavior.
these are the bad guys, sd 6 and slone

how does this promote torture?
If anything it seems to be painted in a negative light

Saw them all. Yes he is a "hero" of the show, certainly by the end. The point is still quite valid.

addressed is one thing - and Star Trek does address it. Promoted is another thing entirely. You missed the point, it seems.
