Such a bittersweet ending....the planet is safe, but cut off from the rest of humanity. On the other side of the destroyed jump node, the remains of the Galactic Fleet has no idea whether the Lucifer reached Sol or not, and are left with no choice but rebuild the jump node (while still fighting the Shivans), which will take a lifetime. A lifetime of not knowing whether your homeworld is still alive.
And the pilot, he's just at home on earth. Stuck there, but satisfied, and free and ok, for in his lifetime all he will know is peace right?
I get this way with fictional characters sometimes, like Star Trek, sometimes through all the media you have their entire life outlined, earlier years, the main part of their life, the later years.
Also, it seems a lot of people have mentioned Freespace and Babylon 5.
But I don't want to potentially spoil or have the rest of B5 spoiled for me.
This game is a work of art, people. You feel for the 'character' of Alpha 1, because he IS you. Freespace immerses you into its story, its world, in such a unique way. By actually not showing what kind of person Alpha 1 is, the game invites you to imagine who he is, the pain he feels when his comrades die, and all hope seems to have vanished, but you also feel the victory, no matter how bittersweet or empty it really is. Of all the games ever made, of all the stories ever told... Freespace wins.

It's amazing. Ten years ago, this cinematic was considered to be pretty good graphics-wise. Now, standard gameplay graphics are better than what this movie has.
I remember I got this game while looking for a new copy of Starcraft in the store many many years ago (my old CD broke) and got this instead because it was sold out, it was worth every fucking penny.
The first time i completed the campaign this video played, sent a chill down my spine, simply one of the best concluding game videos ever. No game quite captured space combat the way Freespace and Freespace 2 did, absolutely awesome and a criminally underrated game indeed.
such a good good game OMG, remember i was like 12 when i played this, 1st proper game i loved, they should bring it back . . . . i got so addicted to it, would love to play this again
This is one ending I'll never get to see... I got FS1 A year ago after having FS2 for a year (yes, I know it's backwards and there a year apart...) And a day before i beat the game disc 2 scratches on the spot where cutscenes were stored, so as soon as I killed the Lucifer all I got for an ending was a message saying: Insert disc 2 before my CPU Crashed
Kinda interesting - in Freespace 2 the Sol jump node has collapsed, so those are the only GTA people who got home. Well, I guess Alpha One deserves a little vacation.
this game has the best story, fs2 doesnt compare. this video is simply amazing, really cool when the lucifer comes out of subspace. when i see earth, it really gets to me. such a gooood game, i still play it regularly
The best game ever made...period. I still play it almost everyday. I'm sorry FS2 although good, doesn't compare.

I was a fan of Wing Commander and the X-wing series, but Freespace destroyed BOTH of them. RIP Sci-fi flight combat sims....

Hard to imagined that they could make an even better game with the sequel.

Nothing quite captured the deep void feeling that Freespace 1 provided. Epic game.
It deserves a remake and media coverage for sure.

@AlabamaSoldier Check out FSPort. It's FS1 ported over to the upgraded FreeSpace 2 engine and made all shiny and such.

You can play FS1 as a 'mod' for the FS2 Source Code Project

You can knock yourself out on good old games if you want to.
Just $6 for F1 and the expansion, and $6 for F2.

Who was that guy talking after the destruction of the Lucifer?
BJWILLMAN 3 years ago
In the FS1 port to FSO there's a final 'mission' after this cutscene. It basically *is* the cutscene. Nice to see Earth in the actual game. :)

What happened to the last 2 seconds?
kakalunga 4 years ago
Is it just because of the video compression/size/quality , or does the Earth have some sphere around it ?
Anyway , this video is amazing . Don't get me wrong , but I prefer FreeSpace2 . Though both games are awesome !
