You guys are tools. You could accuse any store of this. That's what stores do, they sell stuff that other people make. Not to mention that awesome brands like BDG and toddland are so indie that the only place you can even find them is at Urban, unless you want to buy online. Like I can just waltz down the street to the nearest lomography store and help out the local economy from the roots. You guys probably have a favorite store do... don't hate on other peoples' styles.
@funkrainbow049 Oh come on! I would not accuse many other stores of stealing art and corrupting creativity. Doesn't "indie" mean independent? How could brands sold at international chains count as independent? If you sell out can you sill be indie? I hope Toddland doesnt get ripped off by urban, not that you would care.
@Kactapuss the point is, Toddland is made for urban. you call it "getting ripped off," Toddland calls it "holy shit we're just some kids who made a few wallets and now we're making tons of money because urban sells our stuff for us." I'm sure everyone whos shit is being sold at urban is glad that their shit is being sold at urban. do you have a problem with hot topic too? where else are stores supposed to get their shit?
@funkrainbow049 Great, now urban outfitters is eclipsing our camera stores too. Thats just it. You dont need a lomo. The only reason you "need" a lomo is because Urban Outfitters sells it. When your local camera store goes out of business and can't develop your lomo film you'll start to get it. For a second. Then Urban will stop selling lomos because nobody can develop the film and you wont want one anymore because the fad is over.
@Kactapuss whoa whoa whoa. lomo is way bigger than urban, as I'm sure many people would agree. They have their own stores in major cities, and a huge following of people dedicated to taking pictures using film. as far as your argument to this being a "fad," you're wrong. For one, my "local camera store" is walmart. That's right, you can take old style 120 film like lomo film and give it to walmart, and they send it to fuji to get developed.
hahaha i love it how ppl talk about how certain brands are "so indie". do you know how gay you sound? and if indie means independent.....y is everyone dressing the same in the same clothes shopping at the same places? everyone secretly wants to be soooooo indie that they try and make it seem like they made it up themselves. everyone is the same. JOKES!
hahaha i love it how ppl talk about how certain brands are "so indie". do you know how gay you sound? and if indie means independent.....y is everyone dressing the same in the same clothes shopping at the same places? everyone secretly wants to be soooooo indie that they try and make it seem like they made it up themselves. everyone is the same. Lol you're dumb for making this video. I am an Urban Employee and it's stupid idiots like you trying to make "statements" which make our job harder. If you don't like it, don't shop here. She wouldn't return your shirt because IT WASN'T RETURNABLE. Sure whoever rang you up the first time shouldn't have even sold it to you. I bet you think you're so punk rock. If you have a problem, take it up with corporate, not the people who work in the store to make a living/get by.
@thecorinnster I'm sorry you believe making "statements" is a nuisance. I realize we probably shouldn't have returned the shirt in the frist place. Writing a letter to the Urban Outfitters corporate trash bin would not have been as satisfying (as fun, or get as many views) as this video. I don't like that Urban promotes cheap throwaway fads, their "sale" piles are gluttonous and wasteful to me. If we did this in your store what would you have done?
@Kactapuss You're wasting numerous people's time in this case and the "statement" is of dubious value. One hopes the satisfaction was as warm a feeling as urinating down your own leg.
So to protest Urban Outfitters' ethics... you made some kickass tshirts for them and let them keep all the money? And then you paid them for it?!?!?!? Not really a protest if you are just letting them take advantage of you.
I know I'm not the only one willing to pay a little more for handmade items--why dont you spend your time creating and selling these shirts instead of giving the salespeople at Urban Outfitters a hard time????
I used to work for Urbane as a manager for years. I hated it so much, but needed a job at the time. I can honestly say that the product is poorly made and they try to trick customers. They will take garments that didn't sell well, alter them (i.e.: cut sleeves or legs off, and resell them at a higher mark-up). They allow display 'artists' to do cocaine in the back room of the New York stores during floor-set, I have been witness to this. Worst company ever! Customer service is non-existent.
@Photograffable- Nothing was stolen. Don't attack me. You missed a key point of the video. We actually went in and brought some handmade t's (opposite of mass-produced) and left them there. Then caught on tape people buying them. (Then we pushed it a step further because we wanted the Urban Outfitters employees to notice what had just happened). (even if they didn't care we did).
lol fucking losers, nothing better to fucking do huh? Fucking dumbasses dude. UO is the fucking shit, and doesn't deserve to be stole from, go fuck yourselfs.
What's wrong with mass produced individualism. Another would see it as the democratization of high fashion. Making it accessible to the people (the masses)
Only upper class hipsters shop there. I don't see what's the problem. Goddamn suburban activists. Do something productive instead of wasting your dad's money on t shirts.
Urban outfitters annoys this shit out of me because of their pre packaged looks that promote people playing dress up and exploiting my childhood.... But what these people did in this video was even trendier and dumber and cheaper and on and on than what urban outfitters does.... I really don't think you made much of an impression on anyone... It was about as effective as a Lisa SImpson protest...
Nice documentary. But the thing is your rant is all wrong. The "Capitalize on Trends" is all wrong. Most of there clothes are from different companies and they amass it. Second of all that's called an economy. It's like those people on craigslist who turn the free stuff around and sell it....although thats not what there doing. China thing isn't there fault if they buy from a company. Although I will say I somewhat don't agree with it. But you can't have ex. 50,000 jobs in the US and 50,000 in
the other day i shop dropped a shit in the main isle of walmart...just kidding this video was awsome i think its funny how the dumb bitch wouldnt take it back and also that people bought them
urban outfitters might be mass producing clothing by exploiting third world countries. if we, the consumer, keep on buying these items, we are telling UO that it's ok that they are exploiting these countries and that they should continue to do so. example: if a blue and white striped shirt sells really well, UO will keep it online for a long time. but, if a green and white striped shirt does poorly, they will lower the price as much as they can before completely taking if off the site. ok?
This is truly hilarious, you think that individualism is lost when you shop at this store. Its not the clothes or the brand that you wear that makes you different, its the reason you wear it. I have shopped at UO and Kohls but does that make me the same as everybody else? No you can be different and only shop at Wal-Mart.
So you just made Urban Outfitters a little more money because they're SELLING your T-shirts without realizing it. At the end of the day, when the cash box comes up fuller than it should, how much do you think they're going to care about a coupla nosey kids and their pesky dog?
@VinnyCons Please, you think they check the cash box? You think it will come up fuller than its supposed to? I'm positive that our shirts offset a minuscule portion of the merchandise that is stolen from their store.
I can give a shit what UO thinks of me. I care to influence the past and future customers of UO.
i shop here all of the time and i love their clothing because they have so much variety, but what baffles me is how the hell someone could steal from them? I have been into many of their stores and never stealing seems a bit difficult to do...... i've never attempted to steal from them, but i wonder how the hell did you do it? by the way why steal if you can't afford it? thats so stupid and against the law you know,
I don't get what this person is trying to accomplish, you just gave Urban outfitters more money by letting those people purchase those shirts, so you just lost money on the fake shirts YOU payed to make and now you lost money to urban outfitters... good job on wasting your time
UO has to make do their shit on a wide scale i Steal their shit though. I would however steal from a "mom and pop, underground produced individualism" store as well. The thing is Kactapuss besides maybe in La or New York (im guessing) there isn't that many independently owned stores , If there actually was more of them .People would shop at them for sure. But U O is the only " young hipster street wear " that people really know. They like the style its just they can't find it ne where else
well i unconsciously dont support urban. thats because I steal everything everytime I walk into one. My last haul I got 6 shirts 3 levis a pair of vans and 4 mugs with the guns as handles(18 bucks each?!?!).
With all the stuff you took it shouldn't have not been easy, someone isn't doing their job. I work for UO, that's why I was surprised. If you don't support a company why steal from it? Because you probably wear and use the things you steal I'm assuming. I hope you do know you are hurting the employees working hours and jobs more then you are hurting the company itself and that's any retail company.
@Queenofhearts05 Have you even considered the employees doing a great job or maybe that I'm even greater than the employees and always a step ahead? They lose inventory and money so in any way it is hurting the store. I'm definitely not supporting it in any way. and just wearing the clothes from UO doesn't support it unlike stores that flaunt their names like AX or French Connection. And so what ? And technically the workers such as yourself would end up loosing their jobs at UO.
@Queenofhearts05 Once your jobs are lost UO will close down all of their stores and "They capitalize on trends started by enterprising artists and designers by making knock off's of their material and as a large corporation are able to source it to china and undercut the original designers price and market to people who don't care." will never ever happen again. But don't get me wrong I don't want anything I said about UO to happen nor do I want you and UO workers to lose jobs. Just saying.
You do know that UO is nothing but a department store, we have none of our own labels. If you have issues with the reprints of artists stuff, take that up with the company that produced it, their name is on the neck tag. Better yet take it up with the fashion world. Everything is knock off of another designer. Fashion is just all about business, who can mass produce it or make it limited enough to be bought. UO does nothing but sell what's been made by others.
Also please find me a major company that does not outsource nowadays? American Apparel started outsourcing as well because it cost too much money within the US for them to make products. Am I happy about companies that outsource jobs because of cheaper cost, no. But on the other side someone who cares more about feeding their family and having a place to live, willing to work for wages that Americans would never, I give them nothing but respect for that. There are + and - to everything.
If you want to rebel, rebel where it counts. With Social justice , working with laws and policies against issues you are passionate about. Getting on your internet soapbox and stealing isn't going to change anything. If you actually want to make a difference, learn the fashion business in and out for all companies, and then if you still feel the way you do, ACT on it and change it. Be the change you WANT to see.
@Queenofhearts05 dude, listen I don't care. one of my earlier comments even specifically said that I "unconsciously don't support UO" I simply just steal from UO. I truth fully don't give a rats ass about what UO is doing. I was just putting up a argument about what my stealing from UO actually does.Pretty simply put. This video ranting on and talking shit about UO is completely fucking useless. And I don't steal from UO because I don't want to support it. I steal simply because it's free.
Pretty much I don't care about or feel like saving mom and pop stores and destroying UO. Even though I understand your points which are all valid and that I agree with way more with than this video and the people who agree with and/or created it. I'm just doing my own thing.
@Queenofhearts05 Americans dont work for those wages because they CANT AFFORD TO!!!!!!!!!!! its not about americans not wanting to work for low wages, its about americans not wanting to work for unlivable wages, you know, the type of wages every company would pay given the opportunity. Its people like you who are complacent; people like you allow the decay of the "american dream."
@likekickingjesus who isnt bad as anyone says? wtf are you talking about. It seems like your the one thats the dumbass here. And my comment makes complete sense. I guess that just makes you a dumbass and a pussy bitch.
I don't get it - don't shop at urban outfitters if you don't like them. If people want to purchase clothing from them, who cares? I noticed you guys were in the menswear section - but I hope you know urban buys most of their men's products from other companies - a lot of their clothing isn't designed in house.
I would also suggest looking into how sourcing of garments works - just because it was made in China doesn't mean it was made in a sweatshop. That's a pretty big accusation.
You should ask the third world would if they agree; in your ignorance you believe feeding your family is detrimental in life - of course you do - growing up as a fat american who wastes time shooting videos to buy your own t-shirts. Who supports you - mommy and daddy? and how do they make their living? and how do you make yours?
@mrhanleybteam Nonsense. Ask the third world if they agree with what? Did I claim feeding your family is detrimental?? Agreed, there are multiple layers or irony here. I am not fat. I am bashing the cheap reproduction (and sometimes theft) of real artists creativity and the people who make their livings pulling that off. I understand that the workers in foreign garment shops are controlled by fat americans. What point are you trying to make about affluence or lack therof? What should I do?
If your cool with being represented by a store who's business model is to categorically reproduce OUTSIDE trends on the cheap in sweatshops, that's cool with me. Urban seems to be a thief of others peoples creativity. Also, don't confuse Urban and American Apparel. Urban is a store, American apparel is a brand. All its offerings are consistent with the brand values, simplicity, fair working conditions, and positive environmental initiatives. Urban is superficial.
how the fuck am i supposed to buy t-shirts that cost $60 dollars and up that are probably also produced by kids in china/india/wherever. sorry i just don't have the money
well obviously it didn't work guys...sorry :(. Urban Outfitters and American Apparel were like the only clothing stores that actually had a positive growth rate while things like abercrombie went down.
ABSOLUTLY BRILLIANT!!!!!! im a fellow shop dropper (check out my film the begginers guide to shop dropping) an jus wanted to say ur film was great i shop drop tins an lil messages there are always gonna be some people who dont get it but ur video has made my day its good to no there r other shop droppers out there
Great conceptual art! Did you use environmentally safe spray paint? The video was so melodramatic as though it was exposing something. But what? That the manager recognized the fake tag? I would have just left the shirts there and not bought one. And why take it back?
i work at urban and its really obvious that the first cashier had no clue what he was doing. how could he not tell the tag was fake? you guys make it seen like urban is the only company that has product made in the third world, everything is made in the the third world, like those tees you used! Haters.
your right they just use illegal immigrants. which im not against but i would hope they are not abusing them or taking advantage of them. i actaully like that american apparel fights for immigrants rights its too bad their ceo is a perv.
im just saying i hope they are not taking advantage of the illegal immigrants because i am family with some illegal immigrants. and i dont know if thier is intelligent or not all i know is that he IS a perv and is shallow and has his store managers take pictures of their employees and send them in to him so he can pick out the "ugly" ones and have them fired! we definitely do NOT do that urban.
American Apparel gives people living in the US jobs. These jobs have greater benefits than most and they get paid a fair wage. If these people are "illegal" immigrants they merely helping their fight for immigration reform.
Most of what Dov does is completely consensual, and he just is an eccentric who doesn't believe in social norms.
i work at urban, but i agree. the clothes are overpriced, and the "style" we market is just lame and not creative at all and yet most teenagers and young adults LOVE it and feel like they are buying great things that no1 else has.
funny thing is, i could see retailers selling a "mass produced individualism" tee just for the irony. You are sitting on a gold mine and dont even know it.
You are absolutely right ... I could imagine my daughter going to a "Mass Produced Individualism" store to buy counter-culture tees that are a bit pricey because they're unique and fair trade. Each T-shirt you buy supports a cause somewhere like poverty, water, education, etc. in places all over the world - Appalachia, on the southern border, Africa... I love it
Oh the irony.

Queenofhearts05 1 year ago
@Queenofhearts05 dude, listen I don't care. one of my earlier comments even specifically said that I "unconsciously don't support UO" I simply just steal from UO. I truth fully don't give a rats ass about what UO is doing. I was just putting up a argument about what my stealing from UO actually does.Pretty simply put. This video ranting on and talking shit about UO is completely fucking useless. And I don't steal from UO because I don't want to support it. I steal simply because it's free.
ThowHilton 1 year ago
Pretty much I don't care about or feel like saving mom and pop stores and destroying UO. Even though I understand your points which are all valid and that I agree with way more with than this video and the people who agree with and/or created it. I'm just doing my own thing.

Understandable.

@Queenofhearts05 Americans dont work for those wages because they CANT AFFORD TO!!!!!!!!!!! its not about americans not wanting to work for low wages, its about americans not wanting to work for unlivable wages, you know, the type of wages every company would pay given the opportunity. Its people like you who are complacent; people like you allow the decay of the "american dream."

omg you guys should find something better to do then bash a clothing store lmao...go smoke some weed or sumthing
NatureDane 2 years ago
I don't get it - don't shop at urban outfitters if you don't like them. If people want to purchase clothing from them, who cares? I noticed you guys were in the menswear section - but I hope you know urban buys most of their men's products from other companies - a lot of their clothing isn't designed in house.
I would also suggest looking into how sourcing of garments works - just because it was made in China doesn't mean it was made in a sweatshop. That's a pretty big accusation.
RaylinMarie 2 years ago 26
@RaylinMarie The shirts say *Made in a Third World Country. The sweatshop accusation is your's not mine.
Kactapuss 9 months ago
You should ask the third world would if they agree; in your ignorance you believe feeding your family is detrimental in life - of course you do - growing up as a fat american who wastes time shooting videos to buy your own t-shirts. Who supports you - mommy and daddy? and how do they make their living? and how do you make yours?
mrhanleybteam 2 years ago 2
@mrhanleybteam Nonsense. Ask the third world if they agree with what? Did I claim feeding your family is detrimental?? Agreed, there are multiple layers or irony here. I am not fat. I am bashing the cheap reproduction (and sometimes theft) of real artists creativity and the people who make their livings pulling that off. I understand that the workers in foreign garment shops are controlled by fat americans. What point are you trying to make about affluence or lack therof? What should I do?
Kactapuss 1 month ago
If your cool with being represented by a store who's business model is to categorically reproduce OUTSIDE trends on the cheap in sweatshops, that's cool with me. Urban seems to be a thief of others peoples creativity. Also, don't confuse Urban and American Apparel. Urban is a store, American apparel is a brand. All its offerings are consistent with the brand values, simplicity, fair working conditions, and positive environmental initiatives. Urban is superficial.

@Kactapuss Aren't they both stores? hhaha.

Great conceptual art! Did you use environmentally safe spray paint? The video was so melodramatic as though it was exposing something. But what? That the manager recognized the fake tag? I would have just left the shirts there and not bought one. And why take it back?
jbbels 2 years ago
to try and get money out of it.
LittleLimaBean 2 years ago
i work at urban and its really obvious that the first cashier had no clue what he was doing. how could he not tell the tag was fake? you guys make it seen like urban is the only company that has product made in the third world, everything is made in the the third world, like those tees you used! Haters.
edwizzle06 2 years ago
american apparel is not made in the third world.
LittleLimaBean 2 years ago 4
your right they just use illegal immigrants. which im not against but i would hope they are not abusing them or taking advantage of them. i actaully like that american apparel fights for immigrants rights its too bad their ceo is a perv.
edwizzle06 2 years ago
if you're not against it then it wouldn't be a valid point to bring up right..
and he may be a perv, but he's a pretty intelligent guy
LittleLimaBean 2 years ago
im just saying i hope they are not taking advantage of the illegal immigrants because i am family with some illegal immigrants. and i dont know if thier is intelligent or not all i know is that he IS a perv and is shallow and has his store managers take pictures of their employees and send them in to him so he can pick out the "ugly" ones and have them fired! we definitely do NOT do that urban.
edwizzle06 2 years ago
American Apparel gives people living in the US jobs. These jobs have greater benefits than most and they get paid a fair wage. If these people are "illegal" immigrants they merely helping their fight for immigration reform.
Most of what Dov does is completely consensual, and he just is an eccentric who doesn't believe in social norms.

i work at urban, but i agree. the clothes are overpriced, and the "style" we market is just lame and not creative at all and yet most teenagers and young adults LOVE it and feel like they are buying great things that no1 else has.
hodgrix 2 years ago 5
funny thing is, i could see retailers selling a "mass produced individualism" tee just for the irony. You are sitting on a gold mine and dont even know it.
jthuot 3 years ago 33
You are absolutely right ... I could imagine my daughter going to a "Mass Produced Individualism" store to buy counter-culture tees that are a bit pricey because they're unique and fair trade. Each T-shirt you buy supports a cause somewhere like poverty, water, education, etc. in places all over the world - Appalachia, on the southern border, Africa... I love it
