(A) Previous to May 2010, the theory was that NM was not an ancestor of humans. The mtDNA is too different.

(B) As of May 2010, the theory is that NM was partly ancestral to Eurasian humans. This theory ignores the fact of much chimp-like DNA found in NM not in Eurasians.

(C) The inconceivable theory (which the evidence supports) is that NM was the hybrid descendant of humans with Eurasian DNA which mated with some thing more ape-like (e.g. Denisova) which was also a hybrid.
