The way I see it, the 'Shadow' Minato the S.E.E.S. group was chasing around was like their own personal Erebus. That Shadow was born because they were stuck in the past and all wished to see him again- in a way, maybe wishing for their own death. I think they had to beat their own Erebus first before going up against the Erebus for all humanity.

Second best part of the Answer IMHO. You can feel that Aigis is finally back and ready to rumble once more. I guess that would kinda explain why Erebus is so easy to defeat - it's probably intended. Aigis is literally in God Mode, and the rest of the group is almost equally as determined. And they're fighting to save Minato AND the whole world (AGAIN). How the HELL are they supposed to lose?

The Abyss takes everyone into the Collective Unconscious [the realm where most of the series' most powerful characters like Philemon, Nyarla, Nyx, Erebus etc. come from] because it connects to the memories of the SEES members, who briefly visited it just after Nyx was sealed away.

At least, that's what I /think/ is going on. Series is a mindscrew from the start, so can't be sure.
