I thinks its left open to the interpretation of the audience but scenes like that do make you lean more towards the idea of them being mates.

I re-watched this like 50 times, and I can only say this: Poor Demeter! :( Munkustrap just STANDS there, watching over everyone, making sure they're safe, like the good protector he is - while on one side of Deme, Bomba & Pounci get it on, and on the other side of Deme, Jelly & Asparagus have their fun - and Munku just stands guard, letting his girl WRITHE all by her lonesome there.

Not cool, Munku, you had better make up for that later, and coming to the rescue doesn't count! ;)
