Interesting version, which is shorter than the 12" version and even the regular Single Edit, this version just cuts out and fades out at the 3:43 mark of the Single Edit (which is 4:13)
This version of the song appears on the album "The Flat Earth". Having never seen the other version of the video, this one "sounds" correct to me. All depends on one's first exposure. But hey, it's Thomas Dolby. Kudos.
You can get this video, and all of Thomas Dolby's other videos, too, with his new greatest hits CD, "The Singular Thomas Dolby". It has all the songs he released as singles, and a bonus DVD with all the videos. A great package, all for the price of a CD!!
Hey, great song and Vid by Mr. Dolby, and to the original poster, Great job encoding from the BETA! The video is actually clearer than I expected. Thanks :)
July 2009 Bass Player magazine says Dolby wrote this originally for Michael Jackson to record. Jackson didn't follow-up so Dolby recorded and released. Interesting note is that Dolby recorded all the bass line on the synth. Pretty cool lines.
I'd like to know why TD's videos have some psycoanalists like this one and "She blinded me with science", maybe all used to thk he was crazy, but he's a genius!
This song is so amazing... And the music video is so funny! I always start laughing when becomes a puppet and the puppeteer... Or when he starts to play the flute and his hands stay glued to the flute and to his head... Quitea crazy video but very funny. Great song, Mr. Robertson. Brilliant...
Thanks for the tremendous effort getting the single edit on here - The Singular Thomas Dolby at the end of March finally gets all his videos onto to DVD for the first time. Excellent!!!!
Thank you for posting!! I love this song and it's classic video. Although I like both, I prefer this to the 12" version. The other version is just an attempt to stretch out this already awesome song. I do like the longer run of the ending from the 12" so I guess that part tacked on to the end of this version would be the ultimate for me.
Oh yeah, & how cool is it that they even made a video for the 12" version?
i caught td at a show in san francisco per small club-above all, one of the experiences i've ever had in catching artist live-not just because of
thomas d. but the audience-mostly made up of ghost town-silicon valley cowboys, and nerdy gals. and the camera shots through a remote lens he wore on his head-'just too awesome!!
Not necessarily. I usually tend to like the first version I hear of a song, which is also why I prefer the Ugly Kid Joe version of Cat's In The Cradle. That is, unless the first version I heard was just awful.
Wow I didnt think there was another version and 2 beta Vcrs How did you time it perfectly setting one off another and MTV has Vids to Go never heard of it
Actually, I recorded two separate videos, I just combined the audio from one and the video from the other, and adjusted the frame rate of the video until it matched the audio. MTV released two Beta tapes back in '84 or '85 through Realistic to be sold exclusively by Radio Shack: Video to Go, and Live Video to Go. I won both tapes in an eBay auction last year with a lot of random Beta tapes.
I used to be scared of it too when i was small early age in 1984 on a show called Top of the pops in England i'm from London. It's very creepy video that i ever saw. I used to compare with Michael Jackson video Thriller. Thriller didn't scare at all.

Anyone know who his female singer was? Her voice rocks the tail end of this song. And I'd love to play that synth bass line on an electric bass.
