I was a Miami fan at that game. Long night! I have to say the Tennessee fans were great, and SO LOUD. There was a young couple behind me that made it fun either way. By the second half when the vols scored they gave me a Tennessee pom pom to shake. I went with it. I had a giant green Miami Hurricane cowboy hat on, so I had it coming. Tennessee fans after the game were laid back and we had a great party out in the streets afterwards till early morning . Great memory, other than the game.. ;-)
No, they spent too much time focusing on their outlaw, thuggish nature and made no mention of when a disciplined, respectable teamed spanked their boorish butts. I remember the game and run-up well... the media was accusing Jimmy Jonson & Miami of ducking a "real" challenge so they could face a "mediocre" TN team... We beatem like they were little girls!
Your the school that hired lane kiffin, you have nothing to say about acting thuggish. this might have been a beatdown, but an overwhelming amount of the time miami would whip tennessee, as indicated by the 26-3 beatdown in 2002.
@ktonkin3, you are right that both are good football programs. just to make clarify: UT has 1 title in the last 43 years, really only 1 title in the last 59 years as the 1967 title is one of those post-awarded bogus ones that many teams use to inflate their national championship numbers. Southern Cal was the legit champ that year while UT has 2 losses. Miami has 5 titles in the last 27 years, though only one title in the last 19 years.
@ktonkin3 well then hell army has double digits and minnesota has 3 or 4 and tcu has one and bucknell can lay claim to one...there comes a point when its not worth going back..
@medic7556 dude i was wondering and kept tellin my buddy yeah but they couldnt beat the vols n waitin for them to show it but it never happened. GO VOLS
For me, this is the most memorable of all the many Vols games I've seen. I watched the GT game from a seat in Neyland that year. They wouldn't let Dickey throw it more than 5 yards downfield in that one. They owned Bo Jackson and the #1 ranked Tigers. This team had more heart than any other Vols team I've watched (and that's been more than a few), including the '98 National Champs.
Browns sack was one of the biggest plays in UT history, it really started the momentum we needed to roll over Miami that night. What a gutsy call by Johnny Majors to decline the penalty on the previous play. It forced Miami to run another 3rd down play where declining the penalty would have forced a punt. Majors decision, heavily criticized by ABC broadcaster Frank Broyles, made a difference of 30 yards in field position.
That's a great one, as well, as is the 1991 Tennessee/Notre Dame game. Those were both excellent games in which the Vols trailed the whole way, only to rise to the occasion in the end. And, of course, the Arkansas game helped set up the national championship. The 1986 Sugar Bowl was a game that everyone KNEW Miami was gonna win. And UT destroyed 'em! That's what makes it so special for me.

@Eaglesfanmd You may recall that Miami then lost to TN the very next season.

@Eaglesfanmd also, TN has 6 national championships to Miami's 5. Both are great football schools.

@will0637 ...........Miami wouldn't have had 5 national titles if they'd played in the SEC the last 30 years.

True enough, but you still have to squeak by Tennessee to win a national championship.
