Interesting debate going on here. You have to distinguish between Vikings and an invading army .When Danes etc went a Viking in England they were often single ships ,so of course they would attack easy targets .ie monasterys.But the armies of Guthrum,Ubba,Halfdan etc,came here to take land, settle it for there people,they were better warriors than the saxon which is why they took Northumberland,Mercia and East Anglia

@Saxonsoldiers Hey calm down,I am not dissing what Alfred did ,far from it.If it was not for him we would all be in Daneland now,but you cannot deny history.The Danes came and took Mercia,Nth-umbra and E Anglia.,Alfred's victory at Ethingdun saved Wessex and kept the English nation alive.But the Saxon Fyrds were made up of farmhands and tradesmen like blacksmiths,The Danes that came here were all warriors ,Hence they took 3/4th of England.,I never said the Saxons were weak.

The law system that many countries use today including the English parliament comes from the oldest democracy in Europe The Iceland parliament. No honor among Vikings? Bullshit. Honor was nearly as important to them as it was to the Samurai of Japan. Breaking an oath was the worst "sin" possible in Norse culture, you were expected to show hospitality, be loyal to your kin, and were only permitted to lie when lied to. However, Viking thought did not apply the concept of honor to enemies, and the people they raided and pillaged were enemies to them. It was a bloody and violent time. Everyone did stuff like this back then.

@Boreaser There's a wonderful book still readily available called The Basque History of The World by Mark Kurlansky that details most of their history.They were very early seafarers,fishers and traders in cod across many sea lanes.They are also a very distinctive ethnic group,with unique origins and traits.You may enjoy reading this tome,I know I did!
