It was ironic in a way, because Mayumi voiced Krillin, in the Dragon Ball series, for years as a rival and friend to the series' hero, Son Goku. My guess is that when she was first sought out as Kanna Kirishima's voice actor, the staff chose her for her previous experience of voicing a strong-willed martial artist. She would be expected to give strong fighting presence in her speech and simulate convincing grunts and shouts in fight sequences.

これ見に行ったけど本当よかったなぁ。
すみれ引退の後の歌謡ショウはしばらく下ネタとかやって本当に下品で質が落ちたと思ってたんだけど、
これ見に行った時にあぁ巻き返したなって感じたよ。

新西遊記の前の１，２年は夏の歌謡ショウも新春歌謡ショウもやたら下ネタが多かったんですよ。
特に前年の新宝島は酷かった。
ニコニコ動画にその動画を上げている方がいたんで数年ぶりに確認してみたんですが、やはり今見てもやり過ぎ感がありますね。
カンナ役の田中さんは歌謡ショウでは毎回下ネタ言ってるので、「いつものことか」程度にしか感じませんが、新宝島だと他のキャラまで下品なことを言っています。
下品ネタが終わったと思ったらまた違う下品なネタにって感じで矢継ぎ早に来る。
サクラ対戦の歌謡ショウでは千秋楽にはいつもと違って役者がアドリブをたくさん入れるのが恒例になってるんですが、自分はその千秋楽に行ったんで更にアドリブで下品になってましたし。

I am a big fan of the Sakura Taisen performances. Mayumi Tanaka was great as Son Goku, I really liked her performance.
