Memories of the Christmas of 1968 / along with The Beatles "Hey Jude" / Clarence Carter "Too Weak To Fight" / Jerry Butler "Western Union Man" / Marvin Gaye "The Grapevine" / Aretha "I Say A Little Prayer" Gladys Knight&Pips " I Wish It Would Rain" Aretha "The House That Jack Built"
Tell me this isn't one of the prettiest things ever. Man, I love just driving around on a Sunday around November/December. Seeing the snow coming down and people getting their houses all done up for Christmas and listening to this.
Born Ocie Lee Smith. He hit #2 in Billboard, 10-26-68. Bless you, Otaku-san, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great week. BTW, Just call 'Dave'. No need to use the 'Wollenberg'.
Thank You lasinlo for you kind words. When I got out of the service in1970, it was Not cool to be a soldier!!!!My own generation let me down. Glad today people respect and know just how important the people that are out there on the front line are to them and their freedom.
i remember being about 2 yrs old listening to this song....i thought about it the other day....was not looking for it today but, found it by accident....glad i did ! thanks for posting!!!
I was at Fort Sill when this was on in 68. I had just gotten married and missed my wife. Everytime I hear it I think about that time and her face aglow that got me thru. I lucked out sort of and was on the east west German border in an Armored Cav unit for my time...Unindio, I lost some friends to...Thanks for your Service!!!!
In Loving memory of my Aunt Carolyn, who I remember playing this record from time to time, I want to dedicate this to my wife. After knowing the somewhat corney God didn't make part of the song, I finally listened to all the words and immediately thought of my wife who never fails to greet me with a smile everytime we meet. God didn't make little green apples in the summer time.
What ever happened to GOOD music like this? Like the realistic painters of the 1800's, we have no more.......so very very sad humanity is degenerating :(
I had just graduated from high school, June 13th 1968. This was one of the best songs out at the time. I was going steady with Charlene, but cheating on her every chance that I got with Nancy. That was so very long ago, but this song brings back all of those memories. I was working at Bodker Dairy while attending college.
i was a 13 year old girl in the foster system inn indianapolis when this song was on the radio, and i wasn't allowed outside, but this song helped me to feel the rain on my face, know that god made everything, and one day some one would wake up next to me and say hi. i am now a pastor and a social worker for over 20 years and i cry every time i hear this song,im so grateful to hear and see it. i wonder if ever knew the lives impacted by this song? god bless you, karen
OC Smith made this song famous, however, it was first(?) recorded as a country song by Roger Miller. Miller's version is often mislabled as a "cover", when in fact he did it at least a year or maybe two years before OC Smith. Smith definitely did put his own stamp on the song however.
I only heard this song for the first time on the radio about a month ago, but it touched me instantly. I purchased it on itunes right after I heard it.
Just goes to show a good song is a good song no matter when it was made.
I first heard this song by O.C. Smith while on a period of 'Stand Down' in Viet Nam back in 1968. I fell in love with it then & I still do! Each & every time that I hear it it takes me back to a very terrible time in my life & remember how it helped me to survive that insanity!! However, it also reminds me of the brothers & buddies that I lost back then! It's a bittersweet song for me & stirs up many memories that I am nonetheless really grateful for.
@UnIndio Sir, may you and all those buddies you served with, and ALL who served in those difficult days be blessed. May you have only peace and joy in the rest of your life, and may those already gone find everlasting Peace. I loved this song because it made me think of the kind of woman I hoped to marry one day (I was 16 then). Thankfully, I found such a lady. With feeling.....
What a great song. I remember sitting in our kitchen as a kid, all of 8 years old, and hearing this on the radio. My dad and I would often sit there on Saturday morning/afternoon and listen to the radio. Many fond memories. Listening to this I can almost feel like I'm back there again. Thanks for putting this out here.
This song beat 'Hey Jude' by the Beatles for Song of the Year in 1969.
It's good, but really?? This???
gilmorespore 1 week ago
"Hey Jude" was the top Billboard Hot 100 single for 1968, not 1969.
Incidentally, the top Billboard Hot 100 single for 1969 was "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies.
