Thats very very interesting I like seeing what happens behind the scenes of the bbc news what they do to prepare for the main television news when they go on air how they get ready for the news and how they prepare stories how they have a meeting to discuss the top story for the one 0 clock news six 0 clock news and nine 0 clock news it is very intersting I like that bit starting of at 0:00 it is great to see that thank you for uploading such an excellent video aoout how to prepare for the news
I think if the Cameras weren't on them they would not be so 'charged' as this.
It's like when I used to work on IT and one of the servers went down and the whole office used to look at us. My superior was like: "QUICK! RUN AROUND TO VARIOUS CABLE ROOMS AND LOOK LIKE WE'RE FIXING IT!"
observant viewers will notice Mark Thompson ....Mark Byford ....Mark Dammazer....Adrian Van Klaveran et al who are a little clique who now "run the bbc"....with total incompetence ....Byford as usual dissapears in case there's a Fu** up .....
At 2.31 Michael Buerk mentions John Biffen as the chief secretary of the treasury. I thought Norman lamont was the chief until the 1990 cabinet change
@Visonu When he said: "the former Leader House and Chief Secretary", he meant Biffen was the former Leader Of The House and a former Chief Secretary, rather than being the current Chief Secretary who had previously been Leader.
Yeah, that was a scary omen of things to come. nah, he would never last as chancellor, year and a half tops, to number 10 with you and an electoral defeat that gives the other side with a majority bigger than your entire group of MP's
NACA had an 8-bit charisma with the CLEO level 4 shapemaker option. This let you draw any shape curve with the mouse and spray a live picture onto it.
and VERA was the name of the BBC's version of the first ever videotape recorder. The BBC staff didn't change this to Ampex when Ampex brought out a rival (and far superior) videotape format so the "vera" term is probably still used today.
I recall Ben Elton using a clothes rack to illustrate how a previously anonymous stuffed suit, John Major, suddenly became chancellor (probably put there by the establishment to provide a suitable replacement for Mrs Thatcher should the need arise...)
Great insight into the pressures involved. Does anyone have a copy of an internal BBC tape "The Making of the 6" which is along the same lines? Notice the abscence of email and mobile phones. Imagine how Malcolm Tucker, the spin doctor from In The Thick of It would have been in his element on a day like that!
@pendoian I don't unforunately it would be very interesting and amazing and brilliant to see a BBC tape The Making of the 6 and see how the journalists and people who are in charge of the bbc six 0 clock news get ready for the main bbc six 0 clock news bulletin at 6.00pm and how they prepare the main top news stories to use on that programme at 6.00pm its very interesting to see what they do behind the scenes and behind the television cameras of bbc news it is great starting of at 0:00 amazing

what is "animate charisma"??
akomor1 3 years ago 2
It means mix to another feed i.e. have a gradual transition from one programme source to another.

I am very confused. At the start, it is 11:30am and the BBC news team are preparing for the 1pm news. Then at 00:20, it says 12:30am.

Classic Eighties news room! Striped shirts, white collars, braces, ties loosened! It's pure theatre. Love it!

This is fantastic! I would definately like to go into broadcast journalism after I have seen this. Brilliant.
I bet it's a bit different these days, what with SMS and email.

At 1:22, the director says, "Zoom five, and make charisma." 'Make charisma'? Is that some sort of code? If so, for what?
misterspiffy 4 years ago 3
I think the line is 'zoom 5, animate charisma'. A name to describe the animation process?
michaelsouthwest 4 years ago
Yes, I've done work experience with the BBC and 'charisma' is just a fancy name to describe graphics. They often use names like Vera, Charisma, etc.
JamesWindle 4 years ago 3
Charisma is the name of the digital video effects (DVE) machine made by Questech

I should know. I wrote a lot of the software...

@michaelsouthwest This is indeed correct.

@misterspiffy Questech Charisma was a DVE, a Digital Video Effects device that animated images in real time.
