That baby might be a orphan. From what I understand if a baby elephant looses it's parents or herd. It will wander to another heard and try to move in with them. Unfortunately most of the time the baby elephant get's rejected. The ones that get rejected are the ones that lions and hyenas go for the most.

I believe there was deliberate blinding of the eyes of the herd-members by the camera-person with his/her spotlight so he/she could film the horror and be popular on sites such as this. It is obvious to me at the start, that the spotlight was used to dumb the mother from what was going on behind her, and then again when the herd was trying to investigate/protect. I would have pointed that light at the victim so its family could see properly.
