your an idiot dude, it was originally set up by the whole pilgrim and indian thing, but it was not a national holiday, only certain areas and people celebrated.. then because of the civil war and the fact that the south generally didnt celebrate thanksgiving Abraham Lincoln decided to make it an official holiday to help unite the country or something like that. But thanksgiving ALREADY existed and did come from the pilgrims and indians!!!

The Pilgrims gave thanks to smallpox, because it wiped out a neighboring Native American village, so that the Pilgrims can eat off the crops. The only Native American alive was Squanto, and they captured him and made him a slave, which is why he taught the Pilgrims how to plant and harvest. And because of Squanto, they were able to ally with another Native American tribe.
