I ordered a copy of this game from amazon the other day (been 10/11 years since i played it) It'll be real nice to play it again, it was the first 3d RTS game i played, my dad and i found it very addictive.
Should have a sequel where the British empire goes to Mars and conquer the Aliens and make them sing along "Rule Britannia". Or is that too much of a District 9 lol
@EPsuperFan Actually there ARE sequels, in which Mars is conquered by The Queen's Own Electric Fuseliers and Britian goes on to conquere the rest of the solar system
@philipbabb Haven't played the game. If they want to prevent resistance it is better that they have the element of surprise against the industrialised military powers, if they have to choose particular regions. In the book it is presumed they attack everywhere.
They had those fighting machines for 5000 years, they should have attacked us in the bronze age, or earlier LOL. Heck, we'd offer no resistance to them then. And if they couldn't beat us in 1898, they'd never beat us after. Shit, the president won't even be woken up, just launch air strikes with the national guard LOL. The governor's would be fighting this with local troops.
@ixonixas No, as in game we defeated them with invincible class ironclads, mobile self propelled guns, track layers, armoured lorries, antiaircraft arrays(all of them mark III) 12 inch cannons etc
@SuperMrBentley heh, I almost NEVER used Armoured Lorries once i'd got ATLs and Self-Propelled Guns and Anti-Aircraft veihicles going. Armoured Lorries were pure heat-ray fodder. I liked the Invicible Class Ironclads, just took ages to do the research to get them. :P
The movies, the original with the flying saucers and the newest one with the tri-pods had to be amped up due to the fact the book was written in 1898 and the British Empie alone destroyed or incapacitated 5 out of 50, mind you this is with cannons, muskets, and ironclads, btw, one ironclad rammed and sunk 3 tripods by itself. So if H.G. Wells' Martians attacked now it would probably be a "by the way there was some unimportant news" moment.
I suppose that they would evolve roughly the same speed as which we evolve, but in 1898 their world was almost dead, now, wouldn't their world be dead now anyway? I mean, it's been 112 years. Oh well, just thought I'd give you something to digest. Have you read the book? It really is very good. You should read it if you get the chance.
I finished it a few weeks ago, if you read it read the unabridged version, it's not as complicated, the English dialect at that time was simply horrendous.
Well, humans win is good and all. But if they would've come now. I think the humans would probably have killed them with machineguns and predator missiles and what not
Jeff Wayne's Martians couldn't defeat humans now. We have tanks, jets, deadly rockets... but I think the intelect of the Martians would tell them to make as powerfull machines as Fighting Machines were in 1898.
@plummad Well, according to the book, it takes place in the early 20th century (approximately 1902-1905), but Britain still was the most powerful country.
Couldn't the Martians have started their attack in an other part of the world, one where humans have less advanced military technology. They could have gained more ground sooner in the invasion thus maintaining a stronger colonial economy.
@philipbabb that was kinda..... my fault, you see i was working as a sekretery for the martiens and wen intel came on which country was strongest and weakest i accidently mixed up the strongest and the wekest, so it was a secretery fault
@philipbabb arrogance on the part of the martians they belived that they could easily destroy britain as during the time the book and game is set britain could claim to be the center of the world in sheer size and economic and military prowess. Also the martian game would have been a bit boring using fighting machines against dudes with spears lol
@philipbabb Englad is off by its self it would be nearly impossible to get aid during that time. Aid in enough numbers. Now lets say they landed in china? well lets see they could go to other countries and get help.. While england boats would have to cross the english channel which the martians could destroy easily.
@philipbabb It's better to take out the big lads first because while your burning the weaker armies, the stronger nations are given more time to prepare and mount a stronger resistance than if they were crushed first. If there was a tank and a dude with a pistol who would you take out first?
Theres a series of comics by dark horse based after the war. The British Empire goes on the dominate the globe and 30 years later tries an ill fated invasion of mars. Though the invasion does fail it remains the most powerful country on earth, yet at the heart of the empire there is something amiss...
Well considering the whole point of WotWs was an anti-war, anti-imperialist message aimed at the times superpower it wouldnt be very fitting to have a "Woo, the British Empire rocks"! ending, kinda pointless eh?
Today is a proud day for Britain and indeed the earth. Well done. Report back to base for tea and crumpets.

Wrong. The game is set in 1898, where London was the centre of the economic world and the British Empire was the strongest nation in the world.

I didn't know the original book was supposed to carry that message. I just thought it was a really good story.
But now's I DO know then...yeah. The ending does indeed make sense and is not as out of place as I had originally imagined.
