Jesus be proud of yourself! Honestly I am a purest to the fuckin bone and I honestly think this sounds better than the original! Big yourself up its great! But I aint too sure about the end.
I always kind of assumed that Jeff wrote it about Kelly. I've never read any comment by Jeff pertaining to what the song is really about. I doubt that it was about his marriage to Sandi, as it seemed they were still getting along quite well at that time. Sandi even stars in the Calling America video. If it's not Sandi, then they found a good look-alike.
Love this song...deleted three posts before for being too "gushy". Not this time. Was about 22 or 24 or so when "Balance of Power" came out. I listened to that album a lot..... it kept me sane when a lot of things went "insane". "Is It Alright" is my favorite track from that great piece of work. A lot has happened between the time I first heard it and when I I listen to it again,,,,In "ELO" fashion I will 'allude" to a lot of things but admit "none" of them....bwhahahhhahaha. Thank you...
I like what you have tried to do but some of your later synthy bits after the lyrics "Is it alright" are too fast. Have been back to the original to check I'm not wrong..no, I'm not wrong. Your timing is out. e.g. 1:30
Excelente idea, si bie es cierto que al final resulta un poco cargante. Al album original le faltaba cuerda, aquí le sobra un poquito. De todas formas: felicidades.
hmm, not a bad attempt but it doesn't really add anything. Having said that, there isn't a lot of room for Strings on this song anyway. No offence, l'm only stating my honest opinion.
One of the best songs in Balance of Power. I have heard that the lyrics are about his marriage which was breaking up. BTW the wife of Jeff Lynne Sandi those timed was credited in the Time album in the track Yours Truly, 2095.
"Girl´s voice : Is that you really want ? ". Dou you remember ?
For me, Balance of Power would have been SO much better, had it been recorded with a string section. And I do mean a string section, not an orchestra. The songs are sparse enough to warrant that raw string section sound.
Always loved this song. I think the fact it was recorded without string is purely because Jeff was sick of them scraping away in the background. He had it that way since 1972 and simply wanted a change. Still, an interesting exercise. Can you knock us up a 'Telephone Line' WITHOUT the strings. Sort of ELO Naked as it were.
I remember back in the day people criticized ELO for being overproduced. Now any criticism I hear is that Lynne pared down his production in the 80's, well, I think people are fickle and Lynne is a genius.
@Endunator Agreed. Sometimes I can't figure out what the fans really want. I went into this group expecting things to change and don't begrudge the man for the things he did.
erm? cost?, laziness? current musical trends? apart from the lack of strings Bev Bevans role was demoted to cymbal hitter and tea boy, which is a shame cos there are some good tunes on there, I wish he had put one final last push effort in to it
I see what you did here and it sounds quite good, what did you use was it edirol orchestral by chance,we use that one quite a bit but stereo strings 2 on a korg sounds quite close to the ELO style.Keep it up,theres a trck on OOTB called accross the border,I've often wondered what it would sound like if you swapped the brass section for Miks violin would sound like.
synth used because you wouldn't hear it clearly without being too loud in the mix.I used violin, viola and cello string sections and one violin in this instance.
Nice touch! Well done.

Yes, Sandi Lynne sang on Time as well as the Secret Messages album track "Time After Time".

An excellent example of the highly creativity of ELO. What a wonderful song!

I like this song very much and the video too.
Except those Discovery video- clips were
very stupid. A commercial trick to bring
the string section into the video to make
more money ! Kaminski, McDowell and Gale were not playing in the Discovery album.

was it a case of trying to put the Orchestra back in to the Electric Light? A thing Jeff unfortunately didn't do

Poor Bev, I hate that the album sounds too electronic.
I always doubted if Bev actually drummed on the record.

Thanks leselo,
I used Garritan Personal Orchestra or GPO for
short. I of course had to use instruments that
didn't sound exactly like the original string
synth used because you wouldn't hear it clearly without being too loud in the mix.I used violin, viola and cello string sections and one violin in this instance.
