Just wondering, i think this would make for a good one to show. Since diamonds or other gems were used to be used as ammo, could it be used for a real bullet? Could a diamond or other gem stone be used as a bullet in a gun an work?

Wtf? Captain Kirk wore either a gold or green shirt! Still, I agree with seeker6789, it was probably alien, which is why, you can't EVER succesfully test a star trek myth, cause there's always that excuse
@commodoreQuinn You always knew who was going to die in the episodes, because it would be the unknown person in the red shirt that died. The reason they put Kirk into a red shirt is because they suspected that the cannon experiment would be fatal to him, which it was.
Several other things they forgot. Kirk tied the vine to the other end of the barrel to keep it from misfiring and blowing up when he set it off, and Kirk jumped out of the way, so he wasn't torn to shreds like the dummy. It was the same in the episode, only better thought out.
They forgot that the metrons set up the fight and provided the necessary materials. I'm pretty sure the 'bamboo' was a bit tougher than our bamboo, and that the chemicals had been refined by the omnipotent metrons.
@isaiahawsum I aggree, and since it's on a foriegn planet, the things that Kirk was provided was alien, and could possibly have been a lot more explosive
The necessary ratio is 75:15:10 (potassium nitrate, charcoal, sulfur). As Kirk would have known, and anyone with an internet connection can determine. My money is on them not using the right mix.
And believe it or not, Davy Crockett once used a strapped, hollowed out log as a cannon barrel. The fort he was defending managed to fire it three times before it shattered.
You know, the Gorn episode would have been hilariously awesome if Kirk had given the cannon to the Gorn and then watched as it blew itself up trying to kill him. hahaha
ah.. but in the academy, Kirk excelled in metaphysics ancient weaponry, and they didn't show he packed the gunpower into a compact airtight chamber... go figger
@seeker6789 You know, that's exactly what I was thinking, it was probably as hard as steel, not to mention all the ingredients were alien as well which means they could possibly be more potent than EARTHLY stuff.
I've made black powder at home that was clearly sufficiently explosive and it was a direct mix without any fancy methods. It did not equal commercial powder but it was up to the task. Also made solid rocket fuel at home that worked very well (which was another alternative that Kirk could have tried). Obviously the "bamboo" was actually alien wood that we cannot really assess for strength.
They lied...you can make homemade black powder as strong as comercial...i made it...but for it you'll need to ball mill mixture and then granulate with alcohol...:)
It's not busted at all. The cannon is made from an alien bamboo. Earth bamboo wood just doesn't cut it. In fact the entire arena has been provided for by the aliens who created the fight. The components may have even been planted and prepared for such a purpose.
He could fire up the bamboo canon and leave before it explodes ;d

Anyone noticed that the Gorn was wearing sneakers.

The Alian bamboo sounds good. In the episode, the planet was "salted" with stuff to make weapons from by the Aliens who abducted Kirk and the Gorn.

Black powder is "Corned", formed into wax coated granules that give more surface area to burn from.

Given all the technical impossibilities in star trek, "super-strong space bamboo" or "EZ-mix space charcoal" seem a tad unimportant.
