  • Jesus, he's ridiculous!

  • I don't know why, but I've never been a huge fan. Obviouly he's great, but I'd rather listen to Weckl or JoJo Mayer do a solo. Maybe it's the sound of his drums...too muted or something. Give me Dave Weckl.

  • If Vinnie read all of this competition banter among himself and his peers, he wouldn't dig it at all -- either would Steve Smith, Gadd, Weckl, Bozzio, and especially Freddie Gruber. Freddie would tell you all to " ... shut up, and play the fucking drums, man..."

  • Can anyone tell me what snare vinnie is using here??

    Thanks..

  • Vinnie Colaiuta is in my book one of the all time greats up there with the likes of Buddy Rich AND Steve Gadd who is technically of genius quality.

  • The one and only-Vinnie Colaiuta!!!!!

  • holy mother of God! WHAT was THAT!?! "Amazing" doesn't seem enough to describe it.

  • Yamaha, I knew it! I have his brilliant CD entitled Vinnie Colaiuta and it's quite good. I know he's switched to Gretsch drums but no matter what brand he plays, he's still Vinnie.

'It's not the drums, it's the drummer.' - Geoff Emerick.

  • He's the best drummer Zappa ever had. He's probably the best drummer alive right now. - Terry Bozzio on Vinnie.

  • George Kollias is much better than this shit

  • @Ismaellira93 George Kollias lacks groove. He can just play extremely quick. Like, a wall of sound.

  • @Ismaellira93 George Kollias wish he could play like this (in his dreams). Kollias lacks dynamics, flare, and is not very melodic at all. He's plays for speed (which is quite amazing) but then, it ends there. His solos are that of a teenager with mindless licks and absolutely no structure, whatsoever! You obviously don't know what your typing about.

  • @mydamy00 you are so wrong

  • @TheSilentManII : reaction to "you are so wrong" I agree a degree, Portnoy is a hell off a drummer in another timbre witch he is better in than Vinnie, but what Vinnie shows here is what he is and no way ever Portnoy can beat that and vice versa (I'm for Vinnie, but's thats my , being me,

    greetings klassiek1000

  • @mydamy00 Pathetic -_-

  • Maybe at double bass

  • @mydamy00 watch this video again, and try to appreciate the fact that half of what vinnie is playing is going completely over your head.

  • @mydamy00at what scale of values?

revisit your musical taste................ is better!

    ciao!

  • @mydamy00 Hey guys this is a joke!

  • @mydamy00 Go die please. Wanna borrow my gun?

  • @lilhomiefolife I'm kidding! this is a joke, I play drums.. and Vinnie Colaiuta is better than mike!! but i'm kidding!

  • @mydamy00 LOLOLOL

  • @mydamy00 LOL you dont know what the hell you re talking about , COLAIUTA>portnoy

  • @mydamy00 When exactly has Portnoy been better? he's good but he just doesn't compare to Vinnie :)

  • im here coz of megadeth. Great drummer,

  • @timdrms - It's the original and now discontinued Maple Customs he's playing here. Small square gold lugs and thicker shells than the Absolutes, and better sound.

  • @timdrms

    yes

  • Man, I've got the complete version of this. There's a solo before this 19/16 solo/groove. Its Awesome!

  • @JoEsp why don't upload it...

  • @steldrums87 Sure. I'll upload it soon. Its also from a Zildjian Promo Vid some guy gave to me years ago.

  • @steldrums87 just uploaded it. "Vinnie Colaiuta Zildjian DAy Scotland '94. Enjoy.

  • that snare has such a nice crack to it.

  • For some that may not be enjoying this as much as they could, Vinnie's soloing in 19/16 (notice the little group of 3 after playing the 4/4 bar) and referencing a groove in that meter which he played on Joe's Garage, 1978 (Frank Zappa). Oh, and he's nailing it :D

  • I hope to the Lord Himself that those three dislikes were accidents.

  • Travis Barker could......

  • i agree...

  • Amen to that Bro.. Vinnie is indeed the best

  • beautiful snare sound

  • how about this: all u ppl who diss this guy r losers. u prolly hate drums and u want to dislike this guy cuz he's too awesome. well stop it!

  • oh my god!!

  • yamaha?

  • I know some might not agree, but here it is anyway:

Vinnie's the best drummer in the world!

    k thanks

  • He's one of them :P

  • @sofakingrate you got it man, i think its 1. vinnie, 2. dennis chambers, and 3. Dave weckl.

  • @sofakingrate man...feel the same way. I typically can't stand to hear people to say so and so is the best anything. But without apology I really can say that Vinnie is the best.

  • La grosse classe, le père Vinnie, comme dab'.....!!!!

  • Awesome solo............

  • perfeito

  • One crazy cat! Pure expression! Thank God for Vinnie!

  • A true artist doing what he does best!

I really can't resist it even if I wanted to :)

  • Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Aynsley Dunbar, Chad Wackerman, Chester Thompson, Ralph humphrey, Art Tripp, Jimmy Carl Black...Zappa only ever used the best drummers in his band, to get through a Zappa audition and stay in his band for years took only the very best guys. World class talent and skill...

  • jimmy black must be the worst fucking drummer in the world

  • This solo is in 19/16 like a section of keep it greasy...

este solo esta en 19/16 como una seccion de keep it greasy

He is Awesome... who else can play all that over 19...and make it look easy...haha

  • any videos of this guy?

and "this dude" here btw is vinnie colaiuta.. and is more than just ok..yeah actually he is one of the best drummers in the world and of all time..

  • Wow! That may be the dumbest post of all time! Was that suppose to be funny? Unbelievable.

  • what u say idiot¡

  • Amazinggg!!

  • ohhhh my jodido dios q solo woooooooooooo me quito el sombrero

  • I think his Yamaha back then sounded and looked cooler than his Grestch..

  • Vinnie is on the MEGADETH record THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED he is very versatile.

  • Seen him live so many times xD

    Vinnie is a god.....maybe

    Vinnie is god =O

    legend

  • Never gave a damn about drum solos before but this guy is in the company of Neil Peart, Stu Copeland, and others ( that I haven't discovered yet) in terms of technical profciency and pure balls.

  • Better do more research on Colaiuta, he's in a totally different league than Copeland and Peart.

Check out the recordings Colaiuta's played on, go to his web site. No way in hell Peart or Copeland even come close to his skill level.

  • @generatrix999 yeah man. I hugely enjoy Peart and Copeland (especially Copeland!) and they are brilliant players. but from what I've heard, they are nowhere near as versatile as Vinnie and he has them scorched in the technique department. i heard somewhere that vinnie said he was a big fan of copeland but i bet they friggin worship vinnie.

  • quality,respectful,expressionism,artistic,honest,

honour,no cheat:),excuse me how come he plays that words ,me:PP.. may be is it about that his personality, who knows...

  • Love Vinnie, especially on the album "Joe's Garage" (Frank Zappa, back in 1979).

This drummer is THE master of sight reading !

  • dennis cant swing and vinnie doesnt sound good... fuck the world is in worse shape than I thought

  • That's what i'm talkin' about

  • dont worry dave weckls not dead yet

  • Listen to Gavin Harrison and Morgan Agren. . .

should cheer you up a little bit.

  • gavin is the fucking man! his fills are from heaven

  • Yeah, and Morgan Ågren is from above heaven!

  • dude i no

  • Anyway, i like dave weckl better, but, that's my opinion!!!! don't kill me please lOl

  • In my limited listening experience to Dennis, Vinnie, and Dave, I also feel Dave seems more skilled/versatile...but I STILL appreciate ALL 3 drummers for their contributions...we may BOTH be on someone's hitlist now!...

  • I agree!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • yeah, that's right.. one says Dennis Chambers can't swing, the other says that Vinnie Colaiuta doesn't sound good.. if these were jokes, it would be hilarious, but unfortunately, i think you are serious when writing these funny "statements". Maybe mr. Colauita here can take some lessons on how to "sound good" since he apparently didn't learn that in the 45 years he's been playing the drums..

  • Lol!! Yea man, there are some real idiots on here and you just can't get a point across or anything through there head.

  • No the main reason you don't see chambers in abig band is he can't swing. doesn't know the feel of the ride and licks. See him suck on the buddy memorial tribute? That says it all. Same old funky solos in the middle of a big band break. meanwhile stiff as my dick w/hot chick in the verse section. Stuck on funk junk

  • chambers cant swing?! are you deaf?!!!

  • Next time I see Dennis, I'll tell him rrdrums110 said to work on his swing "feel". hhaha

    Classic:)

  • Maybe he can ask mike stern if he can swing, or many of the jazz greats that has played with him

  • This isn't a fraction of Vinnie's capabilities. I think he's just blowing off a ton of crap. He's like that. Sometimes he just doesn't want to 'give'.

  • 12" Hihats....... nice.

  • Vinnie on Yamaha, normally he's playing gretsch. Nice playing anyway, and year toms sounds nice...

  • Vinnie played yamaha before he went with Gretsch ... he had his signature snare with yamaha .. he played with yamaha for a long time actually !

  • Wow the toms sound really open

  • HAHAHA funny

  • its a solo concept that he probably came up with as he was playing. a common practice amoung drummers. also, if you ask that "modern talent" who their drum hero's are vinnie's name would pop up a lot more than you'd think. we drummers 2day are only standing on the shoulders of giants like vinnie. vinnie(amoung others) str8 taught us young cat how 2 play without a single private lesson. theres no way 2 sound better than the guy you got it from.

  • You dont know nothing about drumming,or you dont know what are you talking about!

  • Really...who that has street cred.

  • Zildijan day? Looks more like Pasties to me. can't really tell though

  • If you don't know how to spell Paiste for a start, then it's really no surprise that you know no difference between Paiste and Zildjian.

  • Lol, I thought that was a backhanded insult at the fact that this was an event held by Scots.

The thought of mounting a pasty on a cymbal stand playing it is amusing though.

  • Says Zildjian right on the cymbals

  • Has anybody noticed why Dennis Chambers hasn't played with the likes of Chick Corea,

or Herbie Hancock or Allan holdsworth!! You

ask....Why???...Because he doesn't know how to read!!! and that's pathetic!, given that he is a great funk and fusion player. Colaiuta, Weckl, and Smith... are not only great players, they can read and interpret "fly shit" when a piece of music is put in front of them. That's why you don't see Chambers playing in a "Swing" big band.

  • You guys must be pretty tight...had a lot of talks about his inability to read?? what a joke...one again kiddies this is an example of a 15 year old showing his age...

  • Okay Genius...Mr Bigshot..I-know-everything about-drums!!,and drummers!! Prove to me Chamber's can read!!I've sen him on numerous

"live" gigs and in many videos, and I've

NEVER seen a chart in front of him!!

The biggest laugh I had was, seeing him play

in a Buddy Rich memorial concert video, and

Will Lee had to "coach" him through a big band arrangement, because he has NO reading

chops!... I'll await your response Einstein!!

  • I would say that seeing Will Lee give Dennis direction in a tune is hardly proof that he can't read. Furthermore I have very rarely seen Vinnie use charts unless it's a studio session. I have seen Vinnie live with Jeff Beck and Jeff had to guide him through some spots in the show??? is that proof that VC can't read. Hardly...Think of the greats like JM and JS who has super difficult music that I am sure took Charts and help to figure out. Dennis my friend can read and you are making me tired...

  • Yeah your right!!! Dennis can read..... The daily newspaper!!That's about it!!By the way!

.... I never said Colaiuta couldn't read!! so

stop smoking crack!!...,and If your tired, maybe you should go to sleep, instead of replying to postings on YouTube!!

  • wow what a hater, theres a reason why chambers is where he is now , and is among the greatest!!!. so what if he cant read music that well, im pretty sure he can play better than you ever will in your entire life.and then you call him pathetic, you wanna know whats pathetic you posting negative comments on you tube about extremly talented that are way better off the you are.

by the way great video vinnie rocked that drum set!!

  • haha lol YOUR 47, yea this comment really shows your maturity level, i swear haters are so piontless , why cant people like you acknoeledge the acomplashments people make instead of pointing out and magnafying their their flaws?

dennis chambers plays amazing music if you deniy that then then your an idiot or know absolutly nothing about drums.. oh yea get a life ,you would think after 47 years you would have one. now thats pathetic

  • dennis chambers cannot, i repeat, cannot read music!!! he admitted it in his latest video and if you go to drum channel there's an interview of him admitting it to terry bozzio. do your home work.

  • as a matter of fact terry asked him how he remembers all the music he's required 2 play and he said "its like remembering a conversation i had earlier with someone". i love dennis but truth is he's musically illiterate. but then again so was james brown and todd rungren and countless other musicians.

  • vinnie's light years ahead of everyone else.

    end of discussion.

    cheers~!

  • hits china just like jojo mayer or the other way around

  • This is an absolutely insane video. Who cares whether you think he is better or worse than another drummer, can't everyone enjoy this for how incredible it is?

  • Read Vinnie's interview in Modern Drummer where he says to kill your idols.I totally agree, and although I am here enjoying Vinnie,I don't idolize him or think that I need to play like him or anyone else.He got to where he is by creating his own style. The other arguments about the "Greatest Drummer" are all moot points. The drummer plays for the audience, the music, not for other drummers, what would be the bennefit of a completely insulated identity such as that? How many non drummers are fans?

  • That's a great point and one that all drummers should understand. I have read that interview and vinnie got it spot on. However, i must admit i do try to look at how vinnie studies and what he learnt- not to necessarily play like him but to be able to understand how he approaches practice, technique etc. I bought that 'Unreel Drum Book' and it is easily one of the best tools i have ever used...the exercises really prepare you for applying your skills to odd time sigs and different styles.

  • Thanks, I'll try the Unreel Drum Book, sounds killer! I really wish I had the bandmates like he does, really nothing like playing with people who just can play solidly. But I used to debate my friends about who is the best, no one really, I like so many different styles, but I like Louie Belson over Buddy Rich just because he writes for the audience, and for his band mates who are phenoms!! Anyway,Thanks for the tip!! way cool of you!! Drum ON!!

  • This guy is just sick in my opinion the best drummer today! he just looks like he was born to play drums. His style, technique, creativity and ability are just incredible. You cannot possibly compare dennis chambers or dave weckl because they r very different drummers. wow...........

  • Vinnie is ,without any doubt, in the elite of alltime musicians, powerful, solid and percise BUT HE RAPES HIS KIT!

  • No offense, but there's no point in comparing Weckl and Chambers to Vinnie. Each is a master and each has their own particular style and we're lucky to be able to enjoy them all. I don't think it's possible to choose the 'best' drummer; I think they're all "bests."

  • Vinnie never ceases to amaze me. I remember around 1980 a drummer friend of mine telling me about this guy Vinnie Calaiuta coming on the scene who was obscenely good and would end up being one of the best drummers in the world. I just shrugged it off having never heard of him and sure enough Vinnie is and has been a world class drummer for years. As many have stated his technical brilliance is almost unmatched. Another Zappa guy too and that list of Bozzio, Wackerman, Thompson, etc. sure is cool

  • dave weckl and dennis chambers are both amazing drummers, but they don't have the time, feel and solidity that vinnie has. everything he plays, whether it be grooves or fills, etc, is super solid, clean and on time.

you could compare weckl and chambers, but neither of them can compare to vinnie.

  • in my opinion, weckl has a better feel.

  • thank god we're allowed to have our own opinion. I would ABSOLUTELY HATE to hear Weckl play with Faith Hill or Sting. Sorry dude.....just because Weckl has been studying with Gruber...SO WHAT!!

  • Yeah, SO WHAT!!! indeed.

  • hater

  • What Gruber? Martin Gruber?

  • No, Freddie Gruber. Forget it...

  • Pretty sure Vinnie has studied with Grubber too. He's studied with all the masters it's just not publicly known like with Weckl.

Yes Dennis can play really well in the funk idiom but so can Vinnie!

I prefer to hear El Negro play Latin! He's from Cuba! (I met him once. It was great!)

As far as Ari and Brian, well, those guys are great with people like Shorter and PILC but their not really involved in so called 'Groove' idioms that much. Their careers have been more focused on so call...

  • OK I can't see my last post so I can't remember exactly where I was going =) but anyway, Ari and Brian generaly play in freer contexts then Vinnie. They're different types of artists and can't be compared. Just enjoyed for their different contributions.

As for Vinnie not having solid time! HAHAHA that's a no brainer and a joke! He's the most solid drummer out there. No one who really knows their shit would say he has bad time! Sorry!

Vinnie, Dennis, Ari, Weckl and Brian are all kings!

  • Vinnie studied with Richard Wilson, who bases his teachings from "... the standpoint of floors, balances, and fulcrums, observing the conclusions of Archimedes, Galileo, and Isaac Newton - using the acceleration of gravity and the theory of mass...." MD Apr '96. Vinnie knows what he's doing.

  • There is no true way of judging greatness in polite conversation. Each player has their high points. Back in the day Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Art Blakey and Louie Bellson had their duels with no clear "winner".(I'd take BR) It would be excellent to see all of our contemporary favs in a competition. I think it would illustrate that all of them most successfully wail....in their own way. We are fortunate to have the choices. DRUM ON and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. :- ))

  • right on bro'!

  • What a fantastic, beautiful groove in 19/16...just nobody else can do that!!!

  • marco minneman could do that. He specializes in odd times signatures but vinnie is still my favorite.

  • Played on over 1000 albums, played on the Joan Rivers show, toured with Sting, currently tours with Jeff Beck and Herbie Hancock, and can play any style of music. He even played on a Megadeth ablum (The System Has Failed). The man can defy analysis

  • Pure best

  • ZEETS IS GOD !

  • there is no drummer better than vinnie colaiuta living alive today.

anyone who thinks otherwise needs their brain checked.

  • im with you mdrndrumr

  • what about dennis chambers , and dave weckl?

  • I actually held on to the 19/16 from 1:00 to 1:38, during that over-the-bar stuff!!! First time for me! I could actually hear what he is palying! Amazing that it's all really there, in place and articulate! Wow!

  • Friggin insane drummer and insane drumming. One of the best no matter how you slice it gang!!!

  • It's fun and tricky to solo over that Keep It Greasy riff. Vinnie is really good at internalizing those odd time figures and playing really comfortably over them. The bass line is very hard-hitting and the tempo is up there, so it's not really a space where you'll hear Vinnie's sensitivity...but he's got tons.

  • Man, well said Bro'! You took the words right out of my mouth! Very articulate. Nice to see someone understanding this stuff so well!

  • Make sure you check out, "Vinnie Colaiuta, Coldrum". It's not my download, but amazing Vinnie stuff, top of his game, and well recorded! You'll love it! Cheers!

  • I will have to disagree with all those who say he's the best. At this top level it is sooooo hard to choose but I will say the Steve Gaad is still no. 1; he might not be as technically gifted as Vinnie or Weckl but his solos are all full of rythm and accents that I can say he's the only one able to achieve.

  • when i was watching this i kinda "zoned out" for a bit if you see what i mean, and i realised something.. if youre just a general listener, not a drummer, you dont really pick up on WHY you like something, e.g. a song might have a really funky beat with loads of ghost notes etc, but lots of people wouldnt notice this - i think you really have to be a drummer to appreciate this kind of playing, whereas with steve gadd anyone can love it.. its the simple rhythm people love, not speed and 19/16..

  • but i hope im making myself clear - im not saying i dont love vinnies playing, just that i think its a lot more important to play things with rhythm than just to shred - but then again, this was at a "zildjian day" so the entire audience was drummers and would be amazed, so it depends on who your audience is as well. im just remembering my first ever drum lesson, and my teacher showed me a clip of buddy rich, and i remember not being that impressed.. i love it now but its good to remember this.

  • Brilliant said! (By the way, are you from Munich? Munich rocks!) As a drummer, I must say I don't like a solo like this; he burns all the way and there is no development throughout the solo. I wouldn't give him credit for dynamics either (in this clip). Well, my opinion.

    Felix

  • nah im not - i cant remember why the hell i thought of that as a user name! probably just put the first random thing that came into my head. yeah i agree, but its still pretty amazing, and he can do a lot better imo. every solo cant be his best .

  • That's 19/16, not 7/8... He's just AMAZING!

  • OMG its that posible?....

  • Thanks for sharing this!!!

Vinnie is just a bottomless pit of ideas....and that left hand!!

    YOW!

  • i don't know why this drummer reminds me dave weckel, steve gadd. but he'es good this the first time i wacht a video from vinnie so that's opinion.

  • Gooooooooooooood!!!!! But Weckl is the best... ;)

  • no , even tho this is a matter of opinion, vinnie has the SOULllll and chops. vinnie gets my top vote.... over weckl. sorry mate. also check out derico watson, he is sick

  • I agree. IMHO Weckl has a looot of technique, but that's it. I mean, he is an excellent drummer -I love his work with Corea's Elektric Band- but I think he puts technique over feeling (or Soul as xdux said). So that's why I wouldn't say Weckl is the best.

  • Vinie Vinie Vinie! what a class act this geeza is! I love listening to him, he is so unique and gets a great sound from his kit! My favourite drummer by far!

  • It's all in the Fingers boys and gals... GREAT STUFF!!! Check out Chad Szeliga... He does some great cymbal rolls, it's his trademark great stuff...

    EVERYONE KEEP BEATIN!!!!

  • He is playing free tempo =]

He switches forth and back between signatures... That yeah, do feel like keep it greasy, but i don't think he is playing on any particular time signature
