  • I think the better question besides what's in the pack is where'd ya get hat? Love it.

  • @millerca1986 Got it at a shop in Martha's Vineyard. Sewed the sides up myself.

  • Shug! I love your videos man. My friends and I had a nice little experience in the Linville Gorge one time and I always tell the story to whoever is listening! haha. Anyway, i was just wondering since you live in Minnesota, how did you come to find the Linville Gorge? Anyway, keep up the good work, really appreciate you buddy. Justin-Atlanta

  • @justin22uga I grew up in Charlotte and Shelby...so romped the Gorge a lot with Dad and Scouts and Hickery and Turk. and we are still drawn to it.

  • i was wondering what type of food do you usually bring on backpacking trips what kind of food and is it dehydrated or freeze dried

  • @GOTHWHT12 I often go with a bit of both.

  • @NecessaryKnowledge You may need a smarter feller than me to answer all that.

  • what kind of cigars are thoses?

  • @GOTHWHT12 Al Capone cognac.

  • @NecessaryKnowledge Answered to you on the other video. Hope it helped.

  • I cant believe I have only just found your channel. Your channel is full of useful information and you are a funny and entertaining guy to watch.

  • @seanmulhall Hello Sean....I have seen your name around for quite a while. Saw you with Mike D. on some vids a while back. Hope we can all hit the piney woods someday.

  • the actual filter in your water filter looks like the filter out of a Katadyn Hiker.

  • @TheCanyonCrawler Bingo....same one.

  • Love the uni-cycle. A classmate of mine used to ride one in OK City back in the day. He parked it on the top of a cabinet in Mrs Chiu's room. I am 52 myself and have hammock camped down in Florida, but got a cold back and bottom in cooler weather. Looking at the videos to gear up to keep my tush and back warm. The ground is too hard on my old bones and so a tarp and hammock is a better option,

  • @RebLin51 Try a good pad or better yet an underquilt. Thankee

  • Thanks to this video I bought the ULA Ohm pack... Thanks Shug!

  • @JapanGear Hope you truly enjoy it.

  • hey Shug,

Where did you find that watch/temp/compass thing you got on your pack??? Been looking for one.

  • @SunFeltSky Got it online at REI.

  • I bet your mama was constantly wondering who she was talking to an a minute by minute basis! Is i correct, o shugamundo?

  • @goldenscales Which Mama?

  • A most informative vid, Shug. Thanks - it gives Me a lot to consider.

  • Why can't I like it?

  • @aceattack52 I get rated on my job so I by-pass it here. 'Preciate you watching.

  • Shug,

Love the videos. I've never heard you mention a water filter, though. Do you use one or jus boil drinking water before filling up? I've got an MSR filter but am looking to lighten my load wherever I can. Cheers!

  • @martinlively I use a gravity system ..... just got lost in the video somewhere as I really do not plan well. I just start filming. Mine is an old ULA Amigo Pro ... no longer available.

  • Most impressive is your cook kit. I hope my DIY one is as likable. I fired it up once and then it fell apart, (bad JBWeld), but it was putting out some sizeable flames. I've since rebuilt it and can't wait to test it again with screws in it to hold everything in place. We'll see. Also, the OHM is the pack I've been looking at for some time. They seem the perfect size. They make 'em about twenty miles away from me, over there in Logan, Utah. Best to ya. On to Part Dos.

  • @slodeth5 I am happy with the cook kit as meal time is play time!

The OHM is my go-to pack for three season. I like the way it carries.

  • Nice shug ! Your a ginger no wonder you don't like sunlight me wife is a ginger too ...she hisses at the sun ...that just down right scares me ! .....Love the vids btw ;-)

  • @brutallindigo Me no like de sun>>>>>!!!

    It is a ginger issue.

  • yo brah, yeah man i'm a gorge rat!!! lol that's more like a beaver

  • ur a kick!!!!!!

  • @spiavsspia

    Whoooooo Buddy Thanks.

  • ur a little weird

  • @etekballer14

Thanks for pointing that out to me. It never occurred.

  • Shugmeister, why am I not surprised you ride a unicycle.... :-D

  • @MrMooseful

    It is a red-head thing........

  • HELL YEAH!

  • hey shug, ive been looking into the Ohm pack myself. Looks like a great pack. quick question though. based on this video your pack seems pretty full with the base load. Where do you put all of your food? for a 6 day trip there must be a lot of it. What do you normally bring for food and where do you put it all? is the pack not really as full as it seems in this video?

  • @Skitch246 There was room ....... for around 6 days depending on what YOU eat. I am a grits, poptart, spam, peanut, peanut butter, candy, freeze dried meal guy. Just bring food to keep me strong .... not the focus of the trip. Well .... the morning coffee is.

If in doubt .... go up a pack size to the Circuit.

My food goes in an Ursack and into the top of the pack.

Keep in mind it was a "shoulder season" load.

  • Another great video, thanks, Shug!

  • @shMoulisko

    Mucho Obligato Feller!!

  • You are awesome! Great stuff!

  • @lazydogdied

    Cheers and thankee!

  • Love the opening.

  • @HikerNine

Thanks ... I was pleased how it came out .... shot it after all the pack stuff!

  • What's your brand preference when it comes to smokes?

  • @247wanderlust

Those Cognac Al Capones .... an intermission cigar. I like 'em

  • excellent as always matey

  • @wall2rockclimber

Looking forward to watching your new ones when I finish up here!

  • Love the hillbilly cookware, looks like it's been on a few trips. thanks for the tour

  • @CampfireTalk

That pot has been on quite a few good adventures......

  • hahaha, your always funny. You remind me a bit of Robin Williams

  • @J0llyGrn

Haaaa.... I'm glad. I was going for a Robert Redford though...... ha.

  • Nice one Shug ma man

Some people are a bit sensitive, can't see why

Looking forward to the next installment

Other than that have a good 6 day trip and i hope the weather holds for yi

  • @itsnickman3

Thanks . Just a lonely lil' troll........ gone now.

    I detest cyber cowards.

  • Shug is sincere. Shug is the type of guy who will save you when the flood waters come. Shug is the type of guy who will do what it takes when needed. So, if you need to squirm in your wormy little world, well then don't watch shug. he is my friend. ps. if you need to puke, use your own boot and cry in your own beer. He will still help. Until then, cowboy up.

  • @lihlen

I banished that troll from my world... Thankee for having my back!

  • @fire1169101

    I may be weak.....

  • You're a nut Shug but we love ya!

Thanks for showing us the cook kit as that's one of the things that I'm always trying to see in your vids at breakfast time. You've got some very sensible combination's there and now you've got me interested in your mini stove.

    Patriot

  • @Patriot36

That is good that you got to see it then. I never know who cares....

I like alcohol and wood combo ..... good for extended trip.

  • Good vid Shug, Finally a video of just plain common sense!!! So many others go to such extremes. Take what you need as you do, again good job. Alaska Larry

  • @lihlen

A comfort load ... but very manageable.

  • lol....a backpack full of deer....

  • @RDPproject

Allrighty ....... deer? Did I put a deer in there? It was late.

  • Thanks I needed that! Can't wait for the next installment. We (family of five) are counting down to our first backpacking trip. As always top notch video from Shug!!!!

  • @btsseeker

Ya'll have a big ol' time on your trip!

  • I've been asked that question sooooooo many times! LOL

  • @MrBillTroop73

Yeah ... i have been trying to avoid it but makes me think of my loads ... time of year, weather, etc...

    Fun

  • That many years old and your still riding a unicycle on rough terrain. Your my hero.

  • @KB3GZW

I will ride until I fall and cannot get up ..... old men want to have fun and behave like the child they were. i speak only for myself.

  • sling blade makes me laugh evertime hahaha, you would be a great guide for backpacking, comedy meets the trail!

  • @dougparadis

I never tire of Karl Childers and Slingblade. My favorite movie ... ever.

  • Too bad I can only give you one thumbs up! Great video Shug . . . looking forward to the next installment!

  • @USNERDOC

Glad that you enjoyed it .... it is fun making it.

  • There are limits to self-indulgence, none to restraint.

  • @UTubeMartyr

That is deep ..... may take me a year or two to respond.

  • @shugemery HAHA! Take your time. Hope you enjoy your trip! Look forward to more videos. Doing the AT trail this summer for a few days and doing my research on backpacking here on the Tube ;)

  • Nice! I am reading glass dependent. Watching the video made me think I should start carrying backup pairs.

    Thanks,

    John

  • @Mrlnwizard8

I often think the same thing...

  • Great video again Shug.

  • @rongallant

    I am trying .... i appreciate that.

  • Gotta love the Crocks, Shug. I got me two pair of Off Road Crocks before they discontinued them. The first pair is running strong after almost two years of steady use. I will cry when the second pair craps out. They are dorky and awesome at the same time! Life is to short to impress others, though. I enjoyed the vid. Thanks!

  • @dlilngn

Between my crocs and my Packa and some other doof wear I sport in the woods ... I know wildlife is mocking me in their songs and wails.....

  • Excellent! Looks to be another great series. Thanks Shug!

  • @sraike

Thankee .... two more part it is looking like.

  • I like them Shug videos. They make me laugh a bit. If there's a part two, I'll probably watch it.

  • @gregp701

    Shug says thanks and Hey.

  • lovin' my crocs...what happened to the orange strap?

looking forward to seeing what else is in your pack as well as the trip videos.

  • @gcstorm1

I never used it so off it came.

I'm on the pack part 2.

  • Cool and very entertaining.

  • @biguy525

    Mucho Obligato and Yeah!

  • Have a grr-eat trip~ I love your choice of cameras. I just ordered a panasonic dmc ts1 waterproof camera last night to replace the one I lost in a rapid on the Merced River in Yosemite. So I'm eager to get it. I also use a Canon Powershot for my youtube videos the S5 which has great video for not being an HD camera. Good in lower light too!

I'm looking forward to the wit and wisdom you will share from your journey to woods. Until then...celebrate life! Laurie

  • @LoveRise

    I do like the Canon!

Soon .... to the piney woods!!!!

  • I thought that mountain laurel and rhododendron is poisonous if you burn it. Be careful around those fumes. As always, love the videos. Thanks Shug.

  • @BradinOkinawa

Maybe .... new one to me. But I usually only burn a leaf or two to help get the initial fire going.

  • how much water do you drink a day when your on a trip

  • @omiss2006

Tough question ..... couple of quarts I reckon.

  • Looking forward to seeing what's actually INSIDE the pack... :-D

  • @Svenofuch

Me too ..... coming soon ... then sooner.

  • Dude, your a nut! Love it. Thanks for the vids!!!

  • @SurvivedTheWild

  • @OscarBlackEagle

    Blinding ... huh?

    Thankee

  • Great video as always Mr Shug, I do have one question in regard to you gravity filter Do you find your self cleaning it more or less than you did using the pump I know this may sound odd But my reasoning is the fact you are forcing the water through the filters opposed to gravity.

  • @medicjimr

Never had a pump long enough to know!!!!!

  • @shugemery Thanks Shug just curious enjoy your trip I have another 11 days to wait till mine only 3 days though but have another one in june.
