  • She just rips your heart out. Fabulous.

  • Brilliantly done. What a voice. Amazing

This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. So perfect. Completely perfect. In every way.

  • Meravigliosa Mariella!!!

  • Who is playing Roberto? Anyone know?

  • 09:08-17 = musical orgasm

  • The passion, the drama... It's just perfect!!! Thank you for posting

  • i'm speechless.....PERFECTION!!!!!

  • Signori, questo si chiama Melodramma!

  • She's 60 here! OMG

    where was this? Which orch/cond

  • @qyzuf Scala, Antonino Fogliani. Also features Anna Caterina Antonacci, Simone Alberghini, Francesco Meli...It is out on DVD.

  • @LordHettrick

    thanks!

  • @icylakepaxphile, yes, Sutherland's version, which I saw in the theatre, had infinite nobility and grandeur. I am surprised that you seem to be treating this as an odd comment, which is what I consider YOURS to be. I really love Devia--this is what gets opera queens trashing other singers. ALL singers have their flaws, and certainly Devia has them. There is room in the world for Devia and Sutherland. Also, it's Dame Joan, not Dame Sutherland.

  • It is the display of incredible control that makes this performance so beautiful and so exciting!

  • Fantastica!!!!!Superlativa!!!!! Inigualable!!!!!! Unica!!!!! Enorme!!!!! La Unica!!

  • Well, Sutherland's Maria Stuarda was the single greatest performance I ever saw by the Gran Giovanna. Devia does a marvellous job. For me, she does not come close to the nobilty and grandeur of Joan. But Devia gives a great performance. I love her seriousness and quiet bitterness, and oh, that floated upper register is so lovely. One doesn't compare. Joan was something superhuman. Devia is wonderful--who can carry off these grand roles better than she?

  • @Richiesutherland nobilty and grandeur ? you are indicating dame Sutherland's version? oh. i really realized the flucuation of personal taste for art could be such great! but i respect your opinion. ^^

  • I always think everything she sings is a masterpiece.

  • @adballet Why she has recorded so little is for me a complete nonsense! She is clearly one of the greatest sopranos of her time (last 30 years). I guess her "crime" was to fall behind Sutherland, Te Kanawa and Caballé in marketing exposure...She is clearly one of the greatest.

  • 1:08-1:15; "shudders" it's settled, Devia KICKS ASS!

  • Yes its back! I love it!

  • forget the high notes, I didn't know her lower register was that majestic and bad ass. devia is slowly winning me over =)

  • Marella Devia is so much more than "good enough" for the roles I've seen her in. SHE OWNS THEM! i dream of her voice in armida....i do i do i do

  • just wonder who were those thumb down to this haunting piece? do they really have ears?

  • I get tears in my eyes every time I watch this performance - this, THIS is really what bel canto is all about. The true drama of these works only comes out when sung with such exquisite perfection. Her ornaments kill me every time - so perfectly suited to her voice, and executed with such soulfulness. I remember seeing this is the theater and leaving absolutely stunned, such a great experience! Devia will always reign supreme in this role for me.

  • La Stupenda she too.

  • I love how she ends the E flat with a diva flair! LOVE HER!

  • @OperaBohemian

ugh..just watched the video..and seeing her turn around after punishing that note at the end....mmmmmhmmmm.

    brava Devia!!

    such an effin diva!

  • @pointemeout

I know right! she's about to be executed and she just turns to the executioner like "Do it bitch!"

  • bravissima, magnifica Devia!! 10 e lode

  • A stunning performance. I watch it again and again. Devia is almost beyond belief. Not only a superb voice but a distinguished actor as well. What more could one want?

  • Well, let's say that after this performance Donizetti's opera should be renamed "Mariella Stuarda"...

  • f a v o l o s a

  • è un'atleta!!!perfetta!

  • From Bo Harding, Copenhagen, Denmark! Oh my God, why don't I know more of this absolutely FANTASTIC SINGER? I adore her a 1000 %. She is SO WONDERFULL, what a voice...simply stunning!!! • Superb...superb...superb...this woman is fierce!!! Thanks for posting. I know I've said it before, but I can't not watch it again and again. Thanks coloraturafan!

  • @GylchrisSprauve You should check out the posting from her recent Naples Stuarda, it was really beautiful.

  • Live much more beautiful!

The mood and the game were adhesive with himself.

    Thanks!

  • I swear this is one of the most compelling scenes in all opera. As I was listening, watching and even reading the libretto, I kept thinking of how amazing it must've been to be there that night. Amazing singing. I am respectful of other sopranos who have essayed this opera and have enjoyed fame and success with this role. I must say, though, Devia's amazingly perfect Italian diction, and impeccable technique make for the best experience I've ever had with this scene. Thank you. Thank you.

  • Meravigliosa

Semplicemente fantastica !!

  • Absolutely AMAZING: What a performance. Who ever can sing Donizetti, esp. this final scene, probably one of the most haunting in the whole repertoire, like Devia? NOBODY. Like Organist08 I did not take 1 breath throughout the 11'! SUBLIME INTERPRETATION and the tenor is VERY GOOD as well.

  • Well, Sutherland, thirty years ago, but now .. nobody.

  • KNOW, sorry for my english:-(((

  • From Bo Harding, Copenhagen, Denmark! What a delight! I did'nt now of this FANTASTIC artist . SHE IS WONDERFULL WONDERFULL WONDERFULL! WHAT a voice!!! Just FANTASTIC!!! I am a fan for ever...!!!

  • Compellng, yes!!!! Ummm...the tenor....

  • bravissima

  • Perhaps the most compelling scene on Youtube....absolutely amazing performance! I don't think I took a breath during the entire 11 minutes. BRAVA!!!

  • This is stunning rendition!!!!

  • c'è un gusto sublime nell'ascoltarla. Ma il tenore??? orribile

  • Mariella still rules!

  • One of the best opera finales. And very beautyful performance and staging. I hope to get the dvd.

  • Magnifique

  • bravura devastante

  • Suberb...Devia really owns this rep.

  • Who was the tenor?

  • francesco meli.

  • what an amaizing opera!!!!!!!! i watch this a thousand times and i can't get enough yet

  • che brava!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I saw that like 200 times today .... I am on verge of insanity ... but i love it !!!

  • Oh my God, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I like it even better than Sutherland's rendition. PERFECTION and so dramatic. I'm crying.

  • Incredible how this woman´s voice is still intact. Of course, darker than before but hasn´t lost the warmth and beauty of her sound. This is just WONDERFUL... BRAVISSIMA!

  • does anyone know why ppl at the met not really looking into good singers like her or podles?

  • Hello?... they´re looking for figurines and mannequins that looks good and singing could be ok. It´s the look, honey. Voice isn´t the most important thing today as it´s been demonstrated everywhere. Besides, what could people expect from that guy on the top?. At least we have youtube. I don´t care going to Met anymore. Unless someone with a real good voice comes.

  • Dear ezayi - Thanks for stating good points. Ageism may be invloved too. Mme. Devia is trim and attractive, but of course is mature (tho younger in voice than most young sopranos). Some people/administrators want only young, glamorous models. But I think voice and artistry are #1. Thus Mme. Devia must be considered a great operatic voice and artist. I'm sure many agree. If she were to appear in NYC, I'd attend "in a New York minute"; her legion of NYC fans would go as well.

  • What I meant is that today they look for young people but whether they have or not the right voice for the part is something else and most of the times they don´t. The woman (Mariella Devia) is an extraordinary singer and I love to hear her anytime.

  • because, very sadly, untalented hookers that show off skin like some russian soprano i won't name... well those sell the whole house mainly because those events are attended by parvenus and groupies.

i'm glad i have Devia all to myself here in italy :p

  • You said it...I thought I was the only one that had issues with the "russian soprano" with only normal talent!

  • Donizetti of course. Sorry Maestro.

  • I was lucky to be in Catania on 22nd march 2009 and to visit the show. It was a wonderful afternoon. Compared to last year, when I saw her Anna Bolena in Palermo (under strike conditions) she's got even better, relaxed and good looking. Her breath is still endless and her singing was outstanding. The creaminess of the highest tones: beyond words. It has to be said, that also the whole ensemble was high standard in Teatro Bellini and I think they made Donizetto proud.

  • it´s really a miracle to hear this. she serve us the donizetti lines with delicacy and an amazing controlled technique..the beauty of the tone is still unbroken, after all these admirable years on highest standart.chapeau,my reverence is boundless !!

  • lassisimo - I agree with you entirely. She's an artist with one of the rarest qualities - a genuine legato. She sews the individual notes into a great tapestry that tells a story with her secure vocal techinque. Age surely is just a number in Mme. Devia's case.

  • dear dt195k2, these were correct and well formulated words. it´s allways pleasing to know that mrs. devias separately gift is a spring of enjoyment for many listeners. and i have to notice that "age is just a number in her case"- as you wrote : her bolena in germany few days ago was solid and timeless. regards :o)))

  • No histrionics; just perfectly judged, subtle acting accompanied with the epitome of bel canto singing.

My God, this woman is good! BRAVA!

    Grazie Coloraturafan!

  • COLORATURAFAN - I love you!!!

  • This is why we love her ! and this why we love you, Cf :D

  • Beautiful thanks my friend

  • Grazie coloraturafan!

  • This was dramatic coloratura singing in optima forma. Brava Mariella. Long may she reign.

  • This is amazing! She gets better and better. Thank you coloraturafan for posting this.

THANKS TO COLORATURANFAN FOR POSTING THIS HIGHLIGHT.

  • Well, for those of you in Europe or Spain at the least, Mariella will be filling in for another soprano in Tancredi in February in Servile. I think it is only for three performances, but I am sure it will be amazing.

  • Ok, shoot me now :(

I am in Madrid for the holidays, and I will soon be returning to Lyon, France...

If I knew, I'd have waited until February...

  • I can't believe I didn't want to see this opera last year when it was presented at the San Diego opera season! This video and music is marvelous. Thank you Coloratura fan for bringing us such wonderful "piece de ciel" to our souls.

    Merci beaucoup!

  • Devia gives an object lesson in how emotion can be expressed by purely musical means.

  • This is some of Donizetti's best music ever. Devia is superb, so infused with dignity (she almost made me forget Sills!) The elasticity of her phrasing across the melodic long arcs -- low and high, soft and full -- all enabled by that breath control, is incredible!

  • Thank you so much Coloraturafan, I saw the performance after this one in Milan and both Antonacci and Devia were even better then (I know, it's almost not to be believed). It is a great memory. Devia is so underappreciated outside Italy!

  • Absolutely wonderful. To get to her age and have all that experience and knowledge of opera and performing to call upon and still have a wonderful voice is such a marvellous thing. Thanks for the post!

  • This is magnificent bel canto singing. What adjectives are left? She is simply out of this world.

  • Superb! I will not attempt to phrase my feelings better than nectenorboi09. Thanks once more, coloraturafan.

  • The absolute definition of bel canto - I went to see this broadcast in NYC no less than 3 times and I still am left utterly speechless! This is absolute proof that profound emotion can be expressed when these vocal lines are sung with such elegance. Devia's sensitive acting and incomparable vocal technique leave me far more moved than the contortions of other more "dramatically gifted" sopranos.

  • Grandissima! As always!
