cool, i saw a performace of this opera in toronto in the fall of 2009, they rented everything, because they don't have the room to store it and it was the same props and settings, we got to go back stage, adly we didn't get o meet any of the actors, i was a little isapointed at that but it wa great perormance and the stuck to the idea of this type of opera in that the spoken parts ar in the regional lnguage but the singig is al in germin, my favorite son in my fvorite opera

There is one seemingly unsurmountable problem in opera. You have great operatic singers, you have great operatic actors and rarely do the two talents combine in the single performer!!

I'd say Hemm scores 8 or 9 on the acting and 7 or 8 on the singing, about as good as you are going to get!

In other words a bloody good performance, now where can I get the DVD of this????????

It's one of the operas that is the most fun to perfoem for any level, lends itself extremely well to interpretation, and really shines when virtuosi are employed in its production. You must have had a great time with it!

For some really great and classic performances of it, try Met '91 and '93! There is also a great little Swedish video production of it from the 1980s, but I have forgotten the details (I'm sure you could find it with a little searching.)

Interesting, never heard of him. I have a decent rendition of Hermann Prey's that I'll post soon if I can find the damned LP. I can't remember how good it is; his "Don Giovanni" recordings on the same album weren't great.
