@Ayda7526 No it does not hurt at all. In fact occasionally our patients are so comfortable and relaxed that they will fall asleep while we are putting on their braces.
I have to get braces . & hopefully i get them the 27th. I have an over bite with gaps. & on the bottom of i had extraction done in September , & my teeth are rotating because i feel it , & i can touch my top teeth to the bottom . My question is , would they need to put a screw in my mouth on the bottom , & spacers on the top ?
@kalia4ever These are very specific questions about your individual treatment. The best person to ask would be your orthodontist. They are the one that has seen you and recommended specific treatment for your case. The most important thing is make sure you are seeing an orthodontic specialist, not just a general dentist. They will be able to work with you to get the best result for your teeth.
@RandomLiekWoah The kind of braces you get and the treatment you get always depends on the treatment you and your orthodontist decide is best for you. You should never let your insurance company dictate treatment.
I was wondering do i get spacers when i have my extraction which is the teeth after the molars? my back molars haven't grow yet so i don't know if i need spacers unless you get spacers for teeth not near the molars as well. please help me out!
@lushberry6 I'm not totaly sure what you mean. If you are talking about "SEPARATORS" then that would depend on if your orthodontist uses bands or brackets on the back molars. If you are talking about a "SPACE MAINTAINER", that will depend on the treatment plan your orthodontist has for you. Make sure you a seeing an orthodontist not just a general dentist and make sure you ask all your questions so you understand your own treatment.
Hi I just got my braces today and it feels very sore. I have taken tylenol and advil twice today and they still feel painful. Any idea when this pain will go away? Also, it's really painful when biting/chewing. Even when I just bite down, it hurts so much. Any advice?
@jrocker324 That sounds totally normal. Keep taking the pain meds. Advil is a little better than tylenol for this. Make sure you do not exceed the recommended dosages. The soreness goes away for most people in 2-5 days, getting a little better each day.
I had gap on my front teeth and I wanted to have braces but my dentist advised me that i don't need to, so he put something on it, do you think I can still have braces when they remove that filling on my front teeth?
@kyramishi Yes you can, if you are still not happy with how your teeth are looking go see an orthodontist and let them know what your concerns are. You do not need a referal from your dentist to see an orthodontist and most orthodontists offer a FREE initial evaluation.
hi i am a 12 year old girl and im very afraid of dentist. Bad experience once. anyways since im not good with dentist and i tend to have a lot of saliva can they just out me to sleep while having them being put on? Oh an how long did it take?
@bevbev65 It's usually not that bad getting braces. We are orthodontists if that helps. No injections are required, and the red thing sucks out the saliva for you.
You should do great. I've never had to have somone put to sleep to get their braces on.
Hi, I am a thirteen year old girl. I have to get spacers in two days, my one question is, do spacers hurt when put on and after? Im a little nervous, also why would someone need headgear?
@blonde341 It is somtimes a little uncomfortable to get spaces in and they do hurt your teeth a bit after because they are pushing them apart for bands, but a little advil or tylenol will take care of that. Don't be nervous you will do great.
Headgear is one way to correct an "overbite" when your front teeth stick out. If you have any question about your specific treatment ask your orthodontist.
@IRock9714 You should discuss the length of your planned treatment with your orthodontist. They can let you know how long your treatment should take based on your treatment plan and your condition.
@harleydakotajahn No the red thing (Cheek retractor) does not hurt. After braces you can get your teeth whitened. We provide that service in my office, but ask your orthodontist or dentist.
@SisterWATCHMEN Hey, if you want to improve your smile, braces will help. The best way to find out more about your needs is to set up an appointment with an orthodontist in your area for a consultation. Most orthodontists do this for FREE.

I dont have braces but i know i need them. I want to know when the braces are tightened do you have to go through that every time? And what do dentists check for when and if you need them?? I really want to know because i have never been to a dentist and i am 13........

@themadmick518 it dosent hurt having them on ive had mine on for a few months it just feels odd haveing somthing added to ur teeth but the best bit of it is the great teeth at the end of i t :)
In most cases placing the braces on your teeth is completely painless.
If bands are used (metal rings around certain teeth), & none were used in this video, Fitting the bands can cause some discomfort.
Most people will have soreness and mild pain several hrs after the wires are in, because their teeth have started to move. Tylenol & advil are usually enough, and this only lasts for a few days.
umm when they are putting on the braces and you have the sun glasses on can you close your eyes so that you do not have to think about it?And another is it uncoftuble to have?umm it looks like it is painful so i am really scared when i get them which i do not know when and 1 more thing is do they have to pull out teeth to do it?pleace typ back as soon as posible pleace thank you have a nice day bye
I have a question .. about retainers. I have one top and one bottom retainers with a wire running across the front and i'm just wondering if its normal that the bottoms kinda rub the inside of my mouth and kinda hurt. its not alot of pain but it is kinda just uncomfortable. is this a problem. i got my braces off about two months ago ...
You should not have any area's causing irritation. Call your orthodontist and they can see you and remove any excess areas rubbing on your gums, cheeks or tongue.
Make sure you are wearing the retainer before you go to the appointment so they can see the irritated area.
Im getting my braces on tomorrow morning!!! Im pretty nervous but it will be worth it. I was just wondering how many people have jaw surgery after having braces to align their face. Ive just turned 20 and im planning on doing this aswell? Should I?? I do have an overbite pretty bad though.....
The treatment option you choose should be based on a discussion you and your orthodontist have on the best choice for you. There are always different treatment options.
Just make the descision you feel most comfortable with. If you have any questions or concerns ask your orthodontist.
don't be scared, it doesn't hurt at all when they put them on, but its usually after they put them on like an hour after you will get headaches and its hard to chew, but that only lasts about a week.
I will be getting braces soon. My only concern is that my bottom teeth are the only teeth that are out of place. It will look stupid if they are only on the bottom. I was wondering if they would put them on the top as well.
As an orthodontist I almost always put braces on both the top & bottom teeth. If you do not, it is very difficult to get the top and bottom teeth to fit together even though the teeth may be straight.
Getting braces does more than just straighening your teeth. So make sure you see an ORTHODONTIC SPECIALIST, not just a dentist to get your treatment.
I'm getting braces on thursday...do they place those things called spacers(or something like that) in between your teeth if they're really crooked? or do they do that even if they're slightly crooked?....
because my bottom front teeth are slightly crooked and one is also slightly crooked in the top row....i know i'll only have them on for like a year or so...is that the least time people have them on?
Spacers are used to make space between your teeth before placing BANDS on your teeth. Some orthodontists use bands and some do not. You will only get spacers (or separators) if you are getting bands.
The amount of time you have braces on depends on your orthodontist and their treatment plan for you.
It's hard to comment on any individual case not knowing all the details of your case. Your orthodontist knows your case the best and has a treatment plan designed for you. Follow the instructions and recommendations they make for you.
I'm an orthodontist so its been a while since I fixed a cavity (A hloe in your tooth caused by bacteria). It should not hurt when they fix it, they should numb your tooth then remove the bacteria and damaged part of the tooth. They then fill the tooth with a filling. Check out some general dentistry sites to find out more details.
Dr.B I havent lost all my teeth but i need braces cuz my jaw is moving away from the other one cuz of the placement of the adult teeth. so do i need to get them pulled if a do its fine if a dont then what???
Dr B - is it normal for the dentist to suggest removal of teeth? I am 39 years old and already had 2 semi-molars removed as a teenager. My dentist (in a foreign country to my home) is recommending removal of all 4 wisdom teeth to create space to align, my remaining molars. Does this sound about right?
The first thing is you should make sure you are seeing an orthodontist, not just a dentist. Orthodontistists have 2-3yrs of specialized training in just straightening teeth and fixing bites. If you see someone and are not sureabout the treatment that was recommended, it is always good advice to get a 2nd opinion.
Every person and situation is different. Some people need teeth pulled to make enough space other do not. You need to rely on the professional you are seeing.
In our office we have teeth removed in about 20% of our cases.
I'm Getting Braces In A Month && I'm Anxious Bhut Scared ! Does It Hurt At All ? My Friends Have Braces && They Say It Doesn't Hurt ,, Are They Telling The Truth ,, 0r Are They Just Saying That To Make Me Feel Better ?
It does not hurt getting the braces on. Your friends are right. After the braces are on your teeth and the wire is put in, your teeth will get sore after a few hours. You can take tylenol or advil for this and it goes away after a few days.
You will do great, just think of how great your teeth will be when you are finished.
The glasses are for eye protection and for the bright lights.
I am the Orthodontist. Pick whatever colors you like because you can change them at your next aptointment. Our patinets are getting Black and Orange for Halloween.
why do the patients have sunglasses on? are you an orthodontist worker? do you think i should get purple and silver.... or pink blue and purple?? please respond i need to know these now!!!!
Putting colors on braces depends on the type of braces. In my office we use SPEED braces, they are a special type that do not require the color ties to hold the wires in. We do put colors on as decorations for our patients that want them.
Don't worry, it will all be worth it at the end. While braces make your teeth sore, it is not that terrible. If it was there would not be so many people getting them. You can take advil or tylenol for any discomfort.
Remember Just think of the great smile you will have when you are done.
I had my braces put on yesterday... They gave me spacers as well. Now my teeth are extremely sore and I can't seem to chew down even on ramen noodle soup :( Any idea when the pain will go away? This is killing me...
The first day or 2 are the worst. Make sure you are taking an anti-inflammatory (ie advil or tylenol) for any soreness. For most people it will last from 2-5 days as you get used to things.
Same, I got my bottom row put on yesterday, I already had top row for around 2 - 3 months, my teeth are super tender, I even find it painful eating a banana! The pain will go away within a week, just make sure you take a painkiller in the morning, afternoon and before you go to sleep, also don't eat the painkillers on an empty stomach as this will cause your stomach lining to get damaged, good luck ;)
Im SUPERRRRR scared to get my braces im getting them next week on Thursday, but only the top ones. Does it hurt when you put that big thing in your mouth ?
i had braces before had them for half a year. They arent that bad. its just that when they replace the wire its painful when ur teeth moves... I Loved the results when my braces came off.. ( i only had braces cuz i had surgery)
i get braces again next may and i am excited... because my teeth are getting crooked again cuz i lost my canine teeth and i cant wait to get the results that i got when i had my first braces! :D
The blue light used is not a laser. It is just a strong blue light and what it does is make the glue that holds the braces to your teeth harden. So don't be scared it's that simple.
It's not that you can't drink soda at all. In the interest of the best health for your teeth anything that may increase the risk of getting cavities is not good. The risk of cavities with braces is already higher.
If you want to drink the occasional soda it should be ok, but have it with your meal and make sure you clean your teeth after.
The blue light is used to harden the glue that stickes the braces to your teeth. For anyone interested in the science, the blue light activated a photo chemical reaction that causes the cement to harden.
Getting the braces on your teeth is not what hurts, but later when your teeth start to move your teeth will become sore and tender, especially when eating. You can take an over the counter pain medication. The soreness usually goes away in a couple of days. GOOD LUCK, great questions.
OMG this friday is my day NOOOOOOOOO hahahaha i got braces that they!! i am really scared because allot of friends told me that hurts allot!! :S one questionn!?! for what is that blue light!!? and another one when you get on your bracers it hurts!!?
Yes, braces are placed on the teeth if the are crooked to move them straight. The patient in the video teeth were only slightly crooked, but had other problems we wanted to fix.
I my office unless we can't use invisalign for a specific reason that is our first choice. Treatment with Lingual braces is much more involved, and has definite effects on speech.
For most people there is no problem with speech. Only if something is placed on the inside of the teeth can there be some lisping. Anyone getting an expander will usually have the most issues with talking.
Hi, I'm 32 and in my work have to do presentations often, for this reason I'm torn between lingual braces and invisalign. Whatever has the less impact on aesthetics and speech is really what i want. In your opinion what would be best? Any advice welcome. Thanks.
so im gettin braces for the first time im in or im going to be in the 10 grade but anway i see that some people with braces have a lisp and i was wondering if thats because of the braces or is that just because u had a lisp befor?.
In our office the braces have little clips that hold the wire in the braces. Some other types of braces use the color ties to hold the wire in your braces.
In my office putting the braces on your teeth only takes about 20 minutes. But getting your teeth ready, going over instructions and putting in the wires makes it a longer appointment. We usually schedual 90min to get everything done.
Do not worry, it does not hurt while your braces are being put on. Your teeth will usually be tender and sore a few hours after, this is because the wire that joins your braces together is working to move and straighten your teeth.
I'm getting braces on Monday morning, what should I expect?

If bands are used (metal rings around certain teeth), & none were used in this video, Fitting the bands can cause some discomfort.
Most people will have soreness and mild pain several hrs after the wires are in, because their teeth have started to move. Tylenol & advil are usually enough, and this only lasts for a few days.
Hope this helps

Ok that is what I was wondering. How long does it take to do evrything plus putting the braces on.
MadisonFoxThomas 2 years ago
Putting the braces on takes about 20-30min.
It takes longer to get your teeth ready, go over instructions after about brushing & flossing, and putting your wires in.
For the whole process we set aside about 1hr & 30min.

@ckaldaras Dr. B i broke mine to day on the end of the brace how will it be fixed?

Your orthodontist will clean off your tooth to remove any excess glue and the brace will be reapplied the same way it was originally places.

umm when they are putting on the braces and you have the sun glasses on can you close your eyes so that you do not have to think about it?And another is it uncoftuble to have?umm it looks like it is painful so i am really scared when i get them which i do not know when and 1 more thing is do they have to pull out teeth to do it?pleace typ back as soon as posible pleace thank you have a nice day bye
taylorlautner123ful 2 years ago
Go ahead and close your eyes, sometimes my patients even fall asleep.
It can be slightly uncomfortable, but it helps keep your mouth open so you don't strain your jaw.
It is not painful getting the braces on, but your teeth get sore several hours after and that lasts for 1-3 days.
No, teeth do not need to be pulled it depends on each specific case, sometimes pulling teeth is required to get a good result.

I have a question .. about retainers. I have one top and one bottom retainers with a wire running across the front and i'm just wondering if its normal that the bottoms kinda rub the inside of my mouth and kinda hurt. its not alot of pain but it is kinda just uncomfortable. is this a problem. i got my braces off about two months ago ...
kayyx27 2 years ago
You should not have any area's causing irritation. Call your orthodontist and they can see you and remove any excess areas rubbing on your gums, cheeks or tongue.
Make sure you are wearing the retainer before you go to the appointment so they can see the irritated area.
Good luck

I Have An Over Bite , Thats the reason why im trying to get braces ! butt will it turn on me ? will I have to get jaw surgery ? HELP !!
ZanethaBby 2 years ago
The type of treatment that is best for you will depend on what your orthodontist thinks after looking at your teeth and bite.
Everyone usually has upto 3 options depending on age.
1. Fix your teeth and bite with braces rubber bands or an appliance like head gear or Herbst.
2. Braces and extractions (taking out some teeth).
3. Braces and surgery (mostly for adult patients with more severe cases).
But don't stress, see an orthodontist an get an evaluation.
Good luck

Im getting my braces on tomorrow morning!!! Im pretty nervous but it will be worth it. I was just wondering how many people have jaw surgery after having braces to align their face. Ive just turned 20 and im planning on doing this aswell? Should I?? I do have an overbite pretty bad though.....
MsBananan 2 years ago
The treatment option you choose should be based on a discussion you and your orthodontist have on the best choice for you. There are always different treatment options.
Just make the descision you feel most comfortable with. If you have any questions or concerns ask your orthodontist.
Good luck

I will be getting braces soon. My only concern is that my bottom teeth are the only teeth that are out of place. It will look stupid if they are only on the bottom. I was wondering if they would put them on the top as well.
Thanks
Vent172 2 years ago
Great question.
Good luck

I'm getting braces on thursday...do they place those things called spacers(or something like that) in between your teeth if they're really crooked? or do they do that even if they're slightly crooked?....
because my bottom front teeth are slightly crooked and one is also slightly crooked in the top row....i know i'll only have them on for like a year or so...is that the least time people have them on?
ScalyXdragon 2 years ago
Spacers are used to make space between your teeth before placing BANDS on your teeth. Some orthodontists use bands and some do not. You will only get spacers (or separators) if you are getting bands.
The amount of time you have braces on depends on your orthodontist and their treatment plan for you.
Good luck

It's hard to comment on any individual case not knowing all the details of your case. Your orthodontist knows your case the best and has a treatment plan designed for you. Follow the instructions and recommendations they make for you.

oMaRiO990 2 years ago
I'm an orthodontist so its been a while since I fixed a cavity (A hloe in your tooth caused by bacteria). It should not hurt when they fix it, they should numb your tooth then remove the bacteria and damaged part of the tooth. They then fill the tooth with a filling. Check out some general dentistry sites to find out more details.

The gel does taste funky. Thats because it is very acidic and is used to condition your teeth so the braces will stick.

Dr. B - i have always been scared to go to the dentist or orthodonist and they say that i need top braces and do they numb you at anytime?
OmGShOWxx 2 years ago
Make sure if you are getting treatment that it is done by an orthodontist, they have 2-3 more years of specialized training than a dentist.
We do not need to numb your mouth to put on braces. NO NEEDELS.

Dr B - is it normal for the dentist to suggest removal of teeth? I am 39 years old and already had 2 semi-molars removed as a teenager. My dentist (in a foreign country to my home) is recommending removal of all 4 wisdom teeth to create space to align, my remaining molars. Does this sound about right?
ant00052000 2 years ago
The first thing is you should make sure you are seeing an orthodontist, not just a dentist. Orthodontistists have 2-3yrs of specialized training in just straightening teeth and fixing bites. If you see someone and are not sureabout the treatment that was recommended, it is always good advice to get a 2nd opinion.
Every person and case is different.

yoyobyfart86 2 years ago
It does not hurt getting the braces on. Your friends are right. After the braces are on your teeth and the wire is put in, your teeth will get sore after a few hours. You can take tylenol or advil for this and it goes away after a few days.
You will do great, just think of how great your teeth will be when you are finished.

DO WE HAVE TO PUT COLORS IN THE BRASES
TheIno1234567890 2 years ago
Putting colors on braces depends on the type of braces. In my office we use SPEED braces, they are a special type that do not require the color ties to hold the wires in. We do put colors on as decorations for our patients that want them.

Don't worry, it will all be worth it at the end. While braces make your teeth sore, it is not that terrible. If it was there would not be so many people getting them. You can take advil or tylenol for any discomfort.

Dr. B
facesortho 2 years ago
I just have one question why cant you drink soda when u have braces?
ChuchiLulu07 2 years ago
are u a sleep????
popprincessmania11 2 years ago
The blue light is used to harden the glue that stickes the braces to your teeth. For anyone interested in the science, the blue light activated a photo chemical reaction that causes the cement to harden.
Getting the braces on your teeth is not what hurts, but later when your teeth start to move your teeth will become sore and tender, especially when eating. You can take an over the counter pain medication. The soreness usually goes away in a couple of days. GOOD LUCK, great questions.

I my office unless we can't use invisalign for a specific reason that is our first choice. Treatment with Lingual braces is much more involved, and has definite effects on speech.
facesortho 2 years ago
For most people there is no problem with speech. Only if something is placed on the inside of the teeth can there be some lisping. Anyone getting an expander will usually have the most issues with talking.
Great Question.

In our office the braces have little clips that hold the wire in the braces. Some other types of braces use the color ties to hold the wire in your braces.
Nothing is in your gums, "that would hurt"

Do not worry, it does not hurt while your braces are being put on. Your teeth will usually be tender and sore a few hours after, this is because the wire that joins your braces together is working to move and straighten your teeth.
