It's great to finally see even a bit of this. I've owned Mr. Bailey's book for years and I had the great pleasure of seeing him play in Dublin towards the end of his life (round about the String Theory period, I think - he was all about the feedback at that gig, anyway). Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that since his death, some of the work and ideas that he championed are starting to become more accepted. Improvisation is now increasingly accepted in classical organ music, for example.
@piperdafunkymonkey the documentary was made up of 4 hour long episodes, unfortunately even on this site you can only watch programmes 1 & 3 - if anyone knows where to find parts 2 & 4 please let me know I'd be extremely grateful :)
As written on the beginning of the video, I have the 4 parts. You can´t watch it in its entire version on the webstie mentioned and of course, watch it on Internet is one thing...but watch it in real screen and with real amplifiers...it´s A WHOLE DIFFERENT THING...
@freeavantgardevideos Yes I realise this, I was only putting a link so people who don't have access to the original series (which is virtually impossible to get hold of) can at least watch more of it than on youtube. I am doing research on derek bailey for my degree. I put the link so that if anyone else was in my situation they can have greater access to this great documentary :) If you know of anywhere I can get hold of the full version please let me know
I bought it from a collector, as I did with many, many of the ones I have, I have thousands of rare videos which I collect since 1995. It is a very hard effort to collect real rare videos, so, I am against these '' everything for free '' behaviour of nowadays.
@freeavantgardevideos I think it depends on a persons attitude towards "everything for free." Personally, having seen most of this online it only inspires me to get a real copy. I find the same with music, so many (notably well off) artists complain about torrenting & file sharing. I however would argue that while some may abuse it, for people like myself it only opens our eyes to music we would never have come across otherwise.
@freeavantgardevideos There are countless artists who I would never have bought a cd or dvd of had I not downloaded their music first (Gil Scott-Heron being a great example.)
Thank you though, I did a presentation a couple of days ago about free improvisation and On The Edge was a great help in constructing an argument for it.
