  • Can't help but think if he had a coach like Bear Bryant, Lou Holtz, Tom Osborne or Joe Paterno (pre-scandal, obviously), his college career may have turned out much better.

Switzer definitely knew X's and O's and how to win, but some younger players need more than that, and Dupree was one of them. In this regard Switzer and his jerk attitude failed completely.

  • If a football player can't get alone with Switzer, who was a players coach, then who can you get along with?

  • 1:02 Did he just say "poo-pooed" in a serious news segment?

  • Dupree was a big baby.

  • Combination of factors and it could certainly be seen that the Coach screwed him. He was also pretty immature when he came to OU, but it is up to the coaching staff to see this and help some of these young men grow up. I was the sports photographer for one of the Oklahoma City Television Stations at the time. I shot most of the video in the story. I spent the week after he disappeared in MIssissippi with a reporter talking with his friends.

    Didn't like Switzer too much.

  • is it true that coach fucked him over???..

  • Dupree thought that it was going to be easy when he was recruited to OU then found that he had to work harder when he suited up and sadly believed he didn't have to do anything kind of like how Mike Tyson stopped training before he was knocked out by Buster Douglas. Dupree was a TO a player who only cared about himself and not the team.

  • switzer ruined dupree and the cowboys dynasty

  • Love Campbell! Dupree should hv been better! Should hv!

  • I'm a Longhorn and this guy was every bit of Earl the Pearl Campbell. It's a damn shame how it went for him.

    Paul Palmer

    Boobie Miles

    LeShon Johnson

    Kijana Carter

    Anthony Thompson

    Blair Thomas

    .....Marcus Dupree

  • This video is Bullshit...That man was a beast

  • at :13 #65 does a retarded summersault

  • @BrianDWalker3445 Awesome, I'm glad you pointed that out, O-lineman make poor gymnasts lol

  • So tragic, I don't have words for it. I've commented on a bunch of other videos but I can't say it enough; this man had a gift from God. While he was dogged by allegations, I still think he should be in the College Football Hall of Fame & I'm far from a homer type fan; I'm from New Mexico. I admit he could have applied himself more and succumbed to the hype and ridiculous expectations that cast a pall over a career, but seriously he was one of the greatest of all time. It just didn't work out...

  • fuk this mother fucker damn he fukin pissed me of. this bitch ruined this kid.

  • that is exactly what he did butt-snacker , learn the game, history and players. I watched the game and the interviews afterword and even the reporters couldnt believe that he blamed Dupree for the fiesta bowl, stupid Mthafka not for being burned out in the 1983 season, watch the whole show next time. I followed OU from 1978-1988, so next watch all the footage ok jack-of-all-cocks

  • Switzer , ou slave master mind having fuck I watched Dupree growing up, he was a good as or better than Herschel in 1982, it was the top two (walker,Dupree) he was the only one that was on Herschels level that year. Switzer fucked this dude career up and then let Oklahoma run rampant in the mid 80's with drugs and crime until they got busted in 1988, Switzer was the worst thing to happen at OU

  • @GatorBaitIn08 : I agree...I played at Oklahoma State Univ. 4 years... 3rd All Time Rushing Leader. All I heard about was Marcus Dupree coming up. I wanted to be a sooner. Then he disappeared and I knew something wasn't right (Switzer). I'm a Dupree fan, and Barry Sanders fan. Those are the runners that motivated me. David Thompson #28

  • Marcus Dupree should have went to Miami

  • It's obvious that none of you people have ever coached football before.

  • thanks barry, for ruining a young mans life and career. its a shame that oklahoma football still even exists

  • i dont care if he got hurt. he is the best best no body can ever tell me that anyone was ever better. he got screwed by that prick. if u saw him play or his highlights u would know. he was the best that never was.

  • Barry Switzer did say his handiling of marcus dupree was the worst coaching decisions he has ever made. And its the most regrettable thing he's done as a coach. It really is kinda sad lol I mean Marcus had potential for GREATNESS.

  • A hamstring tear (injury) is nothing to play with. I had one in High School. I was told that it happened because of not properly warming up (stretching) before going into a full action activity. I think that coach Switzer was running his athletes like horses before properly getting them warmed up prior to going full speed. That is my opinion, I may be wrong but that is how I injured my hamstring.

  • It might be interesting to look at the number of Hamstring injuries that were occurring on the Sooner team during this period. I am not sure we ever reported it but I can remember we talked about it and wondered what it was about the training that hurting rather than helping in this regard. I believe most of the running backs in this period experienced Ham String injuries and that's tough to fix. I stand open to correction on this observation.

  • as both a longhorns and a dallas cowboys fan i am biased against barry switzer...but seriously...he acted like a total dick in this interview...and treated marcus like shit while he was at OU....seriously u get the best player in the country...possibly one of the best athletes to EVER play the game of football...and u don't start him his first 2 games ?...or even let him play ?...WTF is that shit...it's almost like switzer did everything he could to fuck dupree over until he cracked

  • i know it might sound ridiculous...but i think marcus' unique height might have been the source of all his knee injuries....the fact that he was so tall and had a beautiful upright running style might have made him susceptible to hits by much shorter players....he couldn't get low enough to shield his legs from the brunt of the blows...and since they were so long they had more room to bend awkwardly....in the end marcus might have been like a prize racehorse that is too big for it's own good

  • everyone talking trash about switzer is fucking retarded.. a coach doesnt just "dislike" players just because.. that kid was burnt out. it wasnt until he realized he had no options but football to decide to get back into it..

  • @soonermagic24 I agree, it's not Switzer's fault, he was treating Marcus like a man, and Marcus wasn't acting like a man. Everyone says "Oh, he didn't handle him right, he's a prick"...... It's not like Switzer was Marcus' fucking personal coach, he was the head coach of the OU football TEAM. Too many people baby these great athletes, and it's fucking annoying. Marcus doesn't have anyone to blame but himself for quitting after the Texas game

  • @soonermagic24 dude really, the boy ran for 239 on 17 carries, played hurt, then the coach is going to blame hime for the loss in the fiesta bowl, fuck Switzer i would have quit too

  • @gronlaf he never blamed him for the loss you idiot. switzer did everything to keep him motivated in the sport, but he was simply burnt out.. you dont know what youre talking about

  • You guys need to lay off the 30 for 30. yall are just re-saying what was said in the documentary

  • Oh shut the fuck up switzer. He didnt like football? Hah after he destroyed his knee he worked his ass off, lost 100 pounds and went through years of rehab just to get back on the field with the rams in the 90's. You ruined this kid by constantly critizizing him and not coaching him. This kid had the potential to be the best running back this world ever seen, but thanks to you hes a truck driver in mississippi. You Dick.

  • he could have been great, but his idiot coach is a fucking retard. hes an individual not a team player, REALLY???!!! fuck you he could have been a fucking amazing team player but you wouldnt get off his case so fuck you coach

  • If he went to Texas like he had committed to, I am sure he would have made it to the NFL and not been destroyed by the monster that is Barry Switzer.

  • Barry Switzer had a disastrous relationship with Troy aikman too. They hated each other. A lot of people think Barry spread those gay rumors about Troy. I wouldn't put it beneath Switzer after watching this.

  • yeah coach was a fucking moron spittin striaght bullshit....marcus didnt want to play football yeah fucking right....he wanted to play...just not for your stupid ass

  • Marcus Dupree would have smoaked Eric Dickerson back in his day

  • i remember i was a freshman in high school when dupree was a freshman at ou.he reminded me and all my classmates of a former star at our high school named eric dickerson back in 76-79.dupree ran damn near like eric, but eric was much faster and smoother. i loved watching them both. switzer destroyed dupree's career. i just watched the 30 for 30 on dupree's career. it's sad that his career turned out the way it did. they just don't make backs like this anymore. old school backs were the shit.

  • @ Barry Switzer..Marcus WAS a team player, you can ask his high school teammates, & he LOVED football, he was just reacting to your abuse. You took away the JOY of the game from him and even on the film your responsiblity is played down. At least you admitted to 'mishandling' him though.

  • what bothered me about the best that never was is that they sort of downplayed how switzer and the other ou coaches treated dupree

the kid had tremendous natural talent that needed to be nurtured...not reigned in

and switzer had him play injured...and then payed no attention when he sustained a concussion

  • ID ROCK HIS JERSEY !

  • THIS GUY IS FREAKIN INSANE!!!!!

  • imagine how good he couldve been if he had the natural talent he had... and a work ethic like switzer wanted marcus to have.

  • Probably the greatest RB to ever play football. Unfortunately we will never know for sure.

  • Switzer and Dupree both admitted how they handled the situation.

All the blame can't go on Switzer, because Dupree was difficult to coach at times -- and needed to be disciplined. All the blame can't go on Dupree, he assumed to be treated better because he was so highly touted; every school was wiling to do anything to sign him. I'm sure Dupree was expecting love - not tough love.

There are three sides to every story: 1. Yours (Dupree). 2. Mine (Switzer). 3. The truth.

  • I find it amazing that Switzer was this hard ass, take no shit coach in college - and when he coached the Cowboys in the NFL, he let them do what they wanted to do.

    Completly different styles of coaching.

  • @2taggs2 one doesnt treat pros like kids

  • Football's not a democracy. If the coach tells you to run a lap, you damn well better start running. I can't blame Switzer for his disappointment with DuPree's insubordination.

  • this fucking coach doesnt know shit

  • Switzer had strong work ethics for his team and dupree didnt want to do the work, it would of happened anywhere with any coach and with any team.

  • Switzer is a damn liar who kept us all from experiencing Marcus Dupree's greatness not only for his remaining college years, but for his NFL career. We could have been looking at one of the greatest runningbacks of all time. Fuck Switzer. Amen.

  • Barry Switzer is an absolute piece of garbage. What went on with Dupree is a travesty. The kid is nineteen years old and needs guidance, which is what Switzer should have been providing. Instead, Switzer just blamed blamed blamed, and if this is what Switzer would say in public, imagine what kind of garbage he threw at Dupree at practices and meetings.

  • F Barry Switzer - but it was really that reverend fuckface who was involved with the USFL that told him to leave OU to come play at South Carolina - KNOWING if that happened Marcus would never play college ball again due to his ineligibility.

  • poor guy, should have went to texas i think i wish that his agent didnt steal all of his money =/

  • he came to OU because Billy Simms, Switzer is what drove him away...its funny i saw him at Midway Deli today with that bigass superbowl ring

  • @NOMPTONstyle not a switzer fan but love OU atleast he brought a title in 85

  • Switzer was a liar.

  • Switzer was a fucking prick. Probably still is. I hated his ass in college and even more when he coached the Cowbags. That team won the super bowl..yet he got a ring with Jerral..they did it "their way".

  • @Shreds1620 He still is. I am an OU fan

  • He should have came to Michigan he would have a nice place of his own, a job for his mother and a car and a first class education..

  • I'm an O.U. fan, but I agree, under Osborne Dupree would have had a better chance of being the best he could be. Switzer was too agressive sometimes, as a Cornhusker Dupree would have had a better chance behind Rozier and of not being over used when he should have been developing into a well rounded running back, like Rozier. Osborne would not have played this kid hurt, no way.

  • Marcus looked really gimpy running in that Kansas game, some guys are lucky and don't get hurt too bad, looked to me like Marcus played banged up when he should not have.

Somebody mismanaged this this guy, he needed to survive College healthy to get the big NFL contract.

I don't think they watched out for player injuries as well as they could have back then, i.e. making them wait until fully healed.

  • This coach needs to go get a life, a new life, one where he doesn't screws the best player. What an as$

  • switzer is the one who needs to eat a dick. hes the reason dupree was always hurt. usin him like a mule what a shame

  • I wish Marcus would have went to Nebraska, he could have sat behind Rozier for a couple of years and would have been coached by someone who absolutely loved all of his players, who's number 1 goal was to see his players succeed in whatever it is they wanted to do in Osborne

  • @xxxPOOPBANDITxxx Ur right, I wonder if he would be in the hall of fame if he went to nebraska?

  • @Flotownpimp U NEED TO KILL URSELF,I HOPE ALL THE BAD THINGS IN LIFE HAPPENS TO U AND ONLY U! FUKIN RACIST!!! DONT U KNO MY PRESIDENT IS BLACK??? GET OVER IT....SMH

  • @PNAS99 Man I agree with u tottaly exept the killin urself part. That flotown pimp is an asshole he ran for his lil bro cause he was handicapped

  • @redwingsfan35 HIS LIL BRO was his inspiration.I think Switzer was jealous of him and was scared of what he was becomming,Which was the biggest thing in OK history. He showed no love to a country kid who never been away from home and needed love the most so it drove him to have a i dont care attitude..He should of went to Texas but they think MONEY was he reason he chose OK cuz UT had him locked til the last minute. I dont think he was lazy!!

  • @Flotownpimp Even Switzer himself said he regrets the way he coached dupree, thats why he left.

  • @Flotownpimp you a stupid fuck - you wanna talk stereotypes you childmolesting-pillpoppin-cant deal wit stress wit out commiting suicide -soon to be 40year old serial killer - FUCK YOU AND YOUR FLAT BOOTY SKINNY LIPPRD OVER TANNED WHITE BITCHES

  • Obviously Barry Switzer is a prick, and he caused a lot of issues for Marcus. Barry has done this to many college athletes, and this is why he's disliked by so many in who played for him.

  • @123tech Ohhh u are correct thats y he left.

  • you guys are fuckin dicks.. you think this guy doesn't realize the opportunity he missed? he did what he wanted to do. cared a lot about his family and didn't care about fame obviously. you haven't done ANYTHING with your lives. people know him and his name. nobody gives a fuck about any of you. or me. so check the fuckin mirror before you talk shit on a youtube video about some dude who was 100 times better than you and his shit

  • listening to Switzer it is VERY clear that HE ruined this kid. What coach in their right mind say's "he's got a problem". This kid did not want to play football for SWITZER. It was SWITZER who ruined this kid. PERIOD. This kid needed guidience, and, understanding. NOT a dictator.

  • @ger1mon i read bozworth's bio a long time ago. he HATED switzer

  • @ger1mon

True. Too bad he figured out he made a prick move 20 some odd years later he finally admitted on 30 on 30 "The best that never was".

  • @99Silverado53 Good point

  • @ger1mon i remember Depree back in the day he was a Beast!! Switzer and other coaches were hating on him and did not no what they had in Marcus.Just a freshman from a small town and no good guidence. Sad story to me still 2 this day

  • @ger1mon

I definitely agree with you. SWITZER did in fact ruined Marcus, talking about Marcus did not like playing football. This kid was the best in the entire nation, how in the hell he did not like playing football according to dick head SWITZER. He just did not like SWITZER dictatorship ass.

  • @bigGdawggwatch had the ou recruiter told him that he would be ridden harder than anyone else on the team...would he have chosen ou? hell no

all he needed was adult guidance...something he didnt get from his adult relatives...and sure wasnt getting from the faux man of god who played agent

his story is uplifting, as he has come to terms with what happened....but there are many who will burn in hell for destroying an hof career

  • Comment removed

  • @ger1mon, EXACTLY!

  • @ger1mon agreed to hell with switzer i bet if he went with texas or ever i think it was mississippi he would have went and do the same stuff in the nfl

  • Steroids was not even detected back in the day. So what he was fast, it was steroids. Which is in ALLLL american sports right now....you can NEVER base ANY american sport on talent when all these rednecks and niggers are infested by a horible drug. Fucking pigs.

  • @AmericansMakeMeSick ,first of all you fuckin douchebag, steroids is far more prevalent in eastern europe and asia than it ever will be in the u.s. the u.s.tests and exposes more athletes than any other country, that's why ignorant fucks like you run their mouths about american athletes, also unlike other countries our amateur athletes are not supported by state or country and have to work as well as play sports,if i had to guess you're probably a chubby cunt who never played a sport w/o a joystick

  • @eastcoastcroc As much as I liked Marcus, he was a undedicated player who believed he would never have to keep up his work ethic to succeed... and laziness combined with the use of steroids results in lots of injuries.. it fits, sadly.

  • He's fucking garbage. Dupree was injury prone. Now they're trying to make us have compassion for his fat, truck driving ass. He was super fucking garbage in the NFL. Omg, he ran wild against a bunch of fucking losers from the 70's and 80's....he would DIE in the NFL right now. Guy was super garbage...get the fuck outa here with that shit.

  • @AmericansMakeMeSick DUDE, YOU NEED HELP. I WILL PREY FOR YOU.......

  • I was at the Choctaw Bowl in Mississippi when Dupree broke Herschel Walker's record on November 13, 1981, Was a media frenzy I had never seen before for a high school kid ... I was 11 then ... Philadelphia Tornadoes vs. the Union Yellow Jackets.

  • You guys bashing Barry Switzer have no idea what you are talking about. Barry was popular among the players and most players liked him. If you don't like him, there is a good chance that you are from Texas. Why? Because Barry owned Texas. He owned Darrell Royal. Most texans hate Barry for this reason and this reason only. Marcus, although extremely talented, was a mommas boy and got homesick. That is the real reason why he left. I know, because I grew up in OK during this time period.

  • Marcus never had a problem........ the game of football had a problem and it's name was Barry Switzer.

Marcus is just one player victimized by Barry (Akman)..Barry is a liar and never deserved the respect he got while in OK.

His true character came out when he became Jerry Jones's "boy"

Blame Billy Sims for Marcus's exit from college football................... had he told Marcus the truth & said, "Switzer's mental" he would have been successful at the college level playing for another team.

  • It doesn't matter the coach is an asshole you can see it in his facial expressions and the way he talks. Why would he say what re team wants? The team would definately want him back cause they know they would win everygame he's a star and he still is

  • switzer destroyed his career, forcing him to play injured, then belittling him when he couldnt

he didnt just have a ham string pull in the fiesta bowl...he was playing with a broken finger

he was forced to play with a knee injury

he suffered a concussion in his final game with osu

he wouldve been a huge star in the nfl, if he had chosen a different college program

  • @brabon1 That's baloney. Dupree was a lazy bum with all the talent in the world. Switzer never forced him to do anything. Dupree never suited up for the following spring practice and hadn't been part of the team. All he did was go home that summer and eat fried chicken. He was not a team player, and his teammates resented it. Switzer let him get away with it. If anything he should've kicked him off the team before the second season even started! Dupree destroyed his own career!

  • @Potsie791 how did he go from being a freshman phenom to a bum?

he didnt like playing football? why did he transfer to another school so that he could play?

why did he make the stupid decision to play for the usfl?

why did he continue working in some part of the game for years?

what kind of coach throws what appears to be a troubled young man under the bus

switzer was a bastard....never liked that rednecked ahole

what was his graduation rate? 5 percent?

    fuck him and you

  • Comment removed

  • @brabon1 It's easy how he went from a freshman phenom to a bum. Oklahoma was TEAM. He was an individual. He wanted no part of it. He didn't suit up for spring practice and he did NO TRAINING whatsoever during the following summer. All he did was go home and eat fried chicken. He got hurt because he got fat and lazy and thought his physical gifts were going to carry him. He had talent but no work ethic. Billy Sims was a champ and took everything they dished out. Dupree was LAZY!

  • @Potsie791 you are why i hate most sports fans...you see the athlete as a piece of meat...that is how that bastard switzer saw his players

dupree picked the wrong program...because switzer, the bastard, lied to him

he shoulda gone to usc, where he wouldve been a star

    eff you...eff switzer....eff ou

  • @brabon1 No, I don't see athletes as a piece of meat. You obviously don't understand this: Marcus Dupree was a lazy prima donna. He didn't work out with team, he didn't suit up for spring practice. All of his teammates busted their tails in the weight room and on the track all summer, while Dupree just sat at home and ate fried chicken. No program in the world can motivate a lazy athlete. Which is what Dupree was, you need to understand that principle and you obviously don't!

  • @Potsie791 so somehow he went from world class hs athlete to freshman phenom to lazy, good for nothing....how does that happen?

it happens when you have an ahole like barry switzer as your coach

  • @Potsie791 However, Switzer judged Dupree to be fat (233 lbs.) and lazy, and the coach seemed to blame him personally for a 32-21 loss to Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl. "He gained 239 yards," Switzer allowed, "but if he was in shape, he might have had 400."

what kind of ahole says that about a player????

  • @brabon1 I agree with you that Switzer was the outlaw of college football, he had no business saying that about his player. A coach should never publicly criticize an athlete. He put his foot in his mouth and lost his head. My opinion, and I'm sure it's Switzer's too: by anybody's standards EXCEPT WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN HIS OWN, Dupree had a good day, but because he gained weight, he lost that tiny fraction of speed that was the difference between a touchdown and getting caught upfield.

  • @Potsie791 if you were a player and had a coach like that...would you want to continue working hard for him?

did you know that dupree didnt attend one class that year? they didnt care about the kid getting an education...he was a piece of meat

  • Comment removed

  • @Potsie791

In a strange way i have to agree with you. But in today's era, I don't think that players are treated the same way as in Marcus era.

  • marcus was at my barn yesterday lookin at a horse .... true story

  • He sounds like he is bi-bilar. Too sad..

  • very sad time in OU history...Don't remind me...
