Would you reccomend this drums for someone that wants to self teach themselves? Because i want get a drum for my birthday but i don't know which i should use, since i've never drummed before, and i want to get one as soon as possible. (17th b-day)
@BPRINC1 - This would be OK, but you might be better off considering a drum in a 14" diameter, between 5 and 6.5 deep. It will be a better snare overall (in terms of versatility) and is something you could keep if you really get into drumming and use for just about anything. The 3x13 piccolo size is a pretty specific sound and not too many people use them as their primary snares with a full kit. Hope that helps!
Currently using Black Panther's Black Widow, a 14 x 5.5. Trying to get a "softer" or "less body" volume soft of sound... will this piccolo somewhat help?
@Eizensbakulis The snare isn't bad under any circumstances... I just got mine and I fell in love with it. Its more for a budget-conscious drummer that still wants to get a rad sound out of a drum and I definitely have found it. I recommend it by all means and it only costs $60.
@lususvir - It is a bright, cutting drum. However, whether it will cut through a live mix really depends on a number of factors besides the snare. If it is mic'd up, it will depend how the sound engineering puts it in the mix. If you are not playing with mics, it will depend on how loud your other bandmates are!!!
@lususvir Yes. Steel snares are very loud/bright. Depending on the venue, most bars you wouldnt need to mike it up if you didnt want to and just wail on it, it can cut thru pretty loud. Miked up, it will really sound nice. I used to own a Tama 13x3" steel and even with everyone with their amps cranked up that snare was still loud as hell.
HELLO EVERYBODY ineed some drum help. i want to buy a picolo snare drum but i cant decide between the mapex steel snare or the pearl steel snare they both cost the same but mapex is 3.5x13 and pearl is 3x13
@flesongo i think you should go for the mapex, i had a really cheap mapex snare with a good new head and good tuning on it a few years ago, but it sounded great!
@flesongo i say go with pearl no mater what i love some mapex stuff but i have played about 60 difrent kits and i have stoung feelings that pearl is the best hands down :)
I played in a metal band a while ago. I loved the Tama Starclassic 14.5" x 5" Maple tuned fairly tight! Hope that helps! If you want to know what it sounds like, check out "Korn - Porno Creep" on YouTube, It sounds pretty much identical to Dave's!!
I got it used but in mint condition on Ebay for $250
im gonna get a pulse 8 peace double bass drum set for FREE!!! it comes with 2 floor toms 3 rack toms 2 bass and a steel snare. all i have to buy is cymbals and a hi hat :D
@XxStrongDrums1996xX That is just a regular steel Mapex snare of the same size. It doesn't bear any MPX logos or markings, I saw one the other day on display in the shop.
@WhenxChristxReturnsx From what I've heard, the MPX series only costs more because of the logos. Apparently, there is almost no difference between the two drums.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX I don't see how adding a badge to a drum can more than double it's price. But that is quite interesting, I have been considering replacing my Pearl Sensitone snare with this one since the snare strainer keeps coming loose. Next time I go to the local Guitar Center I may have to see if they'll let me give the $60 one a try.
@WhenxChristxReturnsx Yea, I'm not entirely sure on the whole situation. All in all, you have to remember that it's hard to make a low quality steel piccolo snare, since you aren't going for a nice, clean, studio sound. I'm sure that the $60 version, when cranked up, cracks just as much as the more expensive one.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX I think you might be right. I've been looking around online and found a review saying pretty much the same thing. The guy said the only differences he could tell in appearance/sound was that the snare throw-off on the MPX drum was a bit nicer and it had different hoops, but otherwise no difference, so if I can manage to get a refund for my Sensitone snare I'll just try out the $60 piccolo snare and see how I like it.
Side snare is a 10x6 pdp maple, keeping on the cheap like a boss, only 95 bucks if I remember correctly

@rendyonline Piccolos definitely do have less body and can be softer, although I would recomend a wood shell drum for a "softer" sound.

@DrumCenterNH I guess I was just wondering how it compares volume-wise to wood snares. Right now I have a pearl firecracker wood snare.
