We watched this video in school today. Omigod, when he's like, "She got outraged about hunger one day, and now, we're selling our house," I swear half the class (including me) cracked up!
I just finished reading "The Power Of Half" and commend your family's big step to downsize to help make a real difference by giving half from the sale of your huge house to charity. However, I questioned why you didn't just wait until your house was actually sold to decide which charity to donate it to. Or even if you wanted to decide ahead to keep the goal to shoot for in mind, it would make more sense not to actually commit to the charity until you actually had the money to donate.
Best Example Ever. Let's spread the word about this family. And why is Hannah not studying Economics!
Good Job Joseph the video looks good, what editing software did you use?
I'm all about development and policy evaluation, you guys should check out Innovations for Poverty Action, a research organization that helps create and evaluate effective policies for developing countries.
Hey guys! So I recently made a donation to start a fund at a youth philanthropy organization and they gave me a certificate... and a copy of your book! I think that it is really cool that your whole family actually have the initiative to go out and do something and not just sit on your butts and talk. The book was so inspiring and I will do something in the future so I can help too!
So how does it feel to have a book about your family being handed out to teens in charity programs? you rock!
And for everyone who is more concerned about homeless Americans than people in other countries... there's a McD's right down the street, buy them something. Give them directions to the homeless shelter and food bank down the street.
The people in Africa are not so blessed. I appreciate what this family is doing because you will never realize how bad it actually is until you step out of our American "Its all about us" mindset.. thats why there is world hunger in the first place.
"This is how we know what real love is: Jesus gave his life for us. So we should give our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 Suppose someone has enough to live and sees a brother or sister in need, but does not help. Then God's love is not living in that person. 18 My children, we should love people not only with words and talk, but by our actions and true caring." 1 John 3:16-18 America has more than enough to end world hunger. Thank you for stepping out and sharing Hannah & fam (:
Shame on that evil rich person for buying a Mercedes. Instead of working hard and buying a nice car he could have fed some homeless people for a day. If only every rich pig did that we would be living in a utopia! Nevermind all of the factory workers and engineers that it would put out of business if everyone stopped buying luxury cars, don't think of all the homeless people that would create.
While I think the idea is commendable, it seems to me it would have been better if they'd contributed to causes right there in Atlanta. I mean, it was a homeless guy in Atlanta who was the inspiration, right? Did you try to help him? Did you think about giving the money to an organization that helps the homeless right there in Atlanta?
I mean, it's all well and good and noble to help folks in other countries, but we've got hungry people right here in the good old US of A.
The point of giving to an African charity might be that US dollars will go a lot farther to help more people than they would in the US. It's their money, they can donate where they want.. Don't like it? Sell your own house.
WHAT A JOKE ! She was inspired by an Atlanta getto and brought our American Dollars to AFRICA!!!! GET A CLUE ... where is the guy who was your inspiration. AMERICANS FOR AMERICA
im dissapointed at you people. the salwens gave up what they had to help other people. i would like to see you do what they did. Hannah is a true icon, she will be something huge and oneday running ur country
lol u morons!!! ahah omg, nvm ur problem your degrading your own lives for soem black africans who even though u sold ur house are still livign in hunger.
i think that what they are doing is admirable and I think more needs o be done for the homeless here in our country. the difference is, nobody is driving a mercedes in those african deserts. there is no hope. What if there was one day when every US citizen with a real home address donated one dollar, that's it.. one dollar to a fund for the homeless here in america? who would do it? the complainers must be republicans, they're only whining cuz they're being evicted from White house SOON
I can't believe the response you people are giving...
Must be very discouraging.
There doing a selfless act for a good cause.
This talk about over population in Africa? ya its true, but do you actually think not giving them funding for food will decrease that? (It would, but only by increasing the death rate).
The ticket is to donate money to help them to be self sustaining, as opposed to give them a few bags of rice....I hope that's your plan.
I commend this family. First, making a movie being on the news, to set an example to people that have too much, opposed to just enough to get by. Everyone should help out in this world, whether its with money, or just helping hands.
Targeted at the negativity, this family is making sacrifices, downgrading from there luxurious home; who cares if they could pay for it from their own pockets. What does just handing over some green paper do? They are changing their lives, simply to help others.
We have plenty of homeless hungry people in this country!! Does Africa come here to help us? You made your money here spend it here. Sell everything and go live there full time and don't come back!
You people are such morons.................Our country is going to hell in a handbasket and you send the money from the sale of your house to Africa? Don't you think Oprah is sending enough US Dollars the cause already??? TAKE THE MONEY AND PUT IT BACK INTO OUR COMMUNITIES!!!!!! Maybe help some of the people losing thier jobs and homeless in the USA
so let me see if i understand this... you saw homless people that were starving less than a few blocks from your house, and you are selling it to feed other people in africa? where the fuck is the logic in that? if you are gonna sell your house to feed the homelss why not start with the poor bastards down the street? your train of thought derailed the moment it left the station.
"The 1998 census showed that on average women in Niger had seven children, but the new study reckons that over the past five years the number has risen to eight."
The population of this mainly desert country is rising by 3.1 percent a year and is now estimated at 11.5 million, the study said."
8 children per family in a desert. Anyone else see the problem here?
If I make only $5k a yr and have 8 kids, will you donate money to me?
Why is the family size rising from 7 to 8 kids per family?
Because westerners FEED these people. These people then figure out if they're going to be fed, just have more kids!
You are encouraging this destructive behavior causing overpoulation!
You want to help? Donate the money to family planning education/programs in africa. Not food. Don't give africans incentives to have even BIGGER families!
How about working on population control in Africa and there'd be less mouths to feed?
If you're poor, do you really need 5-10 children?
That's a CHOICE people. If you choose to have more kids than you can provide for, that's YOUR FAULT. Why westerners have to make up the slack for poor family planning I haven't a clue.
Would you like to cry on my shoulder about it? Danny's father doesn't have to feel badly for being able to afford a huge house and nice things. He earned it. He probably went to school for many many years and worked very hard to get where he is. The fact that he is willing to give a lot of that up to donate money to charity is much more than most people in his situation do.
What a nice family, they bought their half size house even without selling their mansion! Their mansion is still for sale. What a smart way to get famous. Dear Hannah, I can't wait to see your songs, your name on clothes and other business activities to raise money and give half of it for poor people. I wish you the best and luck in making $100's million and giving half of it for poor people. God Bless America and American Dreams!
This is what you might expect from someone who has been given alot, yet has never worked a day in her life. You see raw idealistic immaturity. She has no real concept of money, yet knows what's best in how others should use it.
Anyone who does not commend this family is pure evil. I have new heros - this family. My faith in humanity is restored. Just wondering if those who posted negative comments are human...?
Evil huh? Well thats a perfectly legitimate claim. Oh wait no it isnt. They are obviously looking to get some media attention or why else would they make a fucking youtube video to show how nice they are giving to the less fortunate. They are no different from anyone else that gives to charity, why do they get special attention. Here this guy sits on his ass with his hands out. Opportunity IS there for everyone, but you have to show some initiative. It doesn't just come to you.
Fuck that! Its ok to help those in need but dont go do stupid shit like sell that mansion. Theres always a way out from being homeless like live at the YMCA and go to a community college for free for 2 yrs and get a degree. People Expect the rich to give to the poor but we dont need to give to the poor if the poor dont help themselves out.Atleast sell one car!
I think it's a great concept, however why not start in your own backyard? Like the homeless man that inspired you? Do you have any idea how many homeless people, including children there are in the USA? Do some reseach, and stay true to your roots.
Okay so you are selling your 6500 sq/ft home to move into one half its size? That must be hard on you going to a 3200 sq/ft home. Hell, why not move into a house 1/4 the size, then you could help more people right? You dont need 3200 feet for 4 people.
That girl is an idiot. The guy in the Mercedes probably went to college worked his ass off, got a good job and kept working hard to buy that fancy car. While the homeless guy sits on his ass. Should they be equal? You a communist or something?
What, so the girl's parents are dumb for selling their house but the guy who has a mercedes is a hard worker? You don't think that her parents worked hard for what they have?
If they can afford to live in a huge house they shouldn't have to feel badly about it.
I never said that the girls parents were dumb. I said that she is because she thinks that no one should be able to enjoy their luxuries if there are people out there who dont have homes.
And I agree with you that they should enjoy their big house, they worked for it. I was being sarcastic about the moving into an even smaller house bit, because they make it sound as though they are giving up everything they have when really they are just downgrading a bit. They are still living in luxury.
Donate your money to charities that help americans who are below the poverty line. By doing so, you are also helping the U.S. economy.
I am not an American but I've lived in New York for a few years and I have observed that most Americans are below the poverty line or going towards that direction.
I really don't get it! The poverty rate in the United States is 12%-15% at any given time and 40% at some time within a ten year span, why aren't you guys helping your fellow americans? The U.S. economy is slowing down and is obviously in a recession. If you keep on funneling your "money" outside of your own country during an economic crisis, there will come a time that you will have nothing for others and for yourselves.
What a load of crap! LOL..this family is obviously doing this for their own gain - getting on tv & such. Why on earth would you do something like that in this economy? I wonder if Hannah will still feel the same way when her "lunchbox" is empty when her parents are gone & she finds herself out of an inheritance! silly, stupid people...........
i don't understand - if it is American Dream why don't you help people in America, there are plenty of people in America that need help. Many Stars do the same thing( donate to Africa) and seems like it is just for publicity, and by the your new kitchen isn't too tiny.
Good for you! Two thumbs up to the Salwen family. The parents should be so proud to have such caring and compassionate children. How great would our world be if the next generation were like Josh and Hanna.
I have to say that I support any effort to give people the help they need. However, I'm sick of forgetting about the people in the this Country. This money, I understand, is going to help poverty overseas. What about the Americans who need it? I'm not talking about the moochers, but the families that really need do. It just seems too often that people jump on the bandwagon to help others in Africa, Ethiopia, etc., but I don't see television shows promoting hungry Americans! Think about it!

I have organized a group of humanatrian to do god's work in ghana. We are going to Ghana in November and i would love to invite you and your family. went on your website but your email doens't open.
Hello guys. I am very thankful for what you and your family have decided to do espeically in Africa. I was born in Ghana and God has bless me with the life and opportunites i have in America. I am also starting a non-for-profit organization to Africa. How can i contact you.
You guys are awesome. Our family is on the perpetual strive for "bigger and better" and your story is motivational - maybe we'll get off our rear ends and do the damn thing too!
You are totally doing the right thing! It'll add heaps to your joy in life as giving and sharing is the greatest pleasure and what a fabulous example you are giving!
Awesome video! I love the way it is serious and hilarious at the same time (I like the part when the kid counts the money). What a dream this family has!

You guys are awesome. Our family is on the perpetual strive for "bigger and better" and your story is motivational - maybe we'll get off our rear ends and do the damn thing too!

Awesome video! I love the way it is serious and hilarious at the same time (I like the part when the kid counts the money). What a dream this family has!
