Best way to copyright something on the cheap... copy your music/video to a CD then put it in sealed envelope, send it to yourself by registered mail. Keep all the receipts for registration at the post office and even the cash receipt with dates all intact etc. When you get your item put it somewhere safe and DON'T open it.

@MrVidmasterGuy If the picture is copyrighted and you use it without permission from the copyright holders then it's theft whether you're making money on it or not. If pursued you could be in court. Think about this scenario... you use the picture without permission then video does really well, you will most certainly be sued! Tread carefully in the land of copyrighted material. Best use your own material then you will sleep better at night too.

@MrVidmasterGuy you have purchased something from itunes for your own personal use. when you purchase a song from itunes you don't own the copyright to that song so therefore you can't use it in a video. the rule of thumb is this... if you don't have permission from the copyright holders to use it in a production you are making then it is copyright infringement and you could be liable for damages.

@TheBorgLives Registering works is needed if you ever decide to sue, and having work registered before infringement means people would be able to sue for statutory damges which is pricey. Without a proper register before infringement, all you can collect is damages which is hard to prove and usually not worth the effort.

This is not a good idea and a waste of time. Copyright for free does not add any more or less protection against intellectual theft.

Think about it, if I stole your work and then used the site to "register" it, does that mean I am the new copyright owner? Of course not, just means someone went to a site and pressed some buttons.

Nothing beats actually registering your work with copyright office if you worry about theft.

Technically it is under copyright automically, not just in the U.S, although you need evidence that you are the original holder and/or creator of the works. Saying that you made it isn't enough.

Some jerk named Chris H. stole my pictures and plastered them on his you tube channel. He boasted on about how he captured the images in the UK. I took the images here in Arizona. He not only stole my pics but lied to his viewers about their location. A simple copy right or water mark might have saved me the headaches.
