  • whoever said these are 'bread and butter' as a criticism...that's moronic. Bread and butter, the phrase itself, means classic things upon which you can rely-- something you can always come back to, a FUNDAMENTAL. Ken does a great job of showing three of the most essential jiu jitsu passes, for gi or noi-gi.

  • @Workhard1994 not really, and i would not be static there anyhow,i would be pressing forward.

  • @kenprimo This is not just for you, but for everybody: Thank you for all the answers. I'm not being ironic, but now i have gotten about 20 answers, so now i know, you have to have an arm in the triangle. Thank you

  • @Workhard1994 he could not triangle because he would need one of the oponents arms inside his legs and his legs or at least one around his head to do so but the whole point of this is to keep tight and lock the hands when your arms are there. surprisingly i only learned this move properly today :D

  • @Dom5142 Nice! But that's what i meant. im no expert. I just couldnt remember whether you had to have the arm with you or not when locking.. But now i know :)

  • @Workhard1994 Glad to help then :D

  • @Workhard1994 No he cant triangle choke Ken. For a triangle choke to succeed, there must the opponent's OWN arm cutting off one of the circulation. You can use your own arm but thats difficult. Wrapping your legs off someone's own head will not do nothing.

  • @Workhard1994 both arms are out. no triangle from that position

  • @Workhard1994 not to mention that he has to have an arm in to get a triangle like that.... you could get some other kinda choke from that position like a crab choke or no arm triangle... but that's why you bring the hips close to yours to minimize the space that he has to work with

  • @Workhard1994 You need 1 arm in, and 1 arm out.

  • @Workhard1994 it would also be illegal head sissors are baned

  • @Workhard1994 You need to have his one hand in besides his head for triangle.

  • @Workhard1994 Both arms are outside of his legs. To lock in a triangle one arm needs to be isolated between the legs.

  • @Workhard1994 You can't triangle with both legs over the shoulder

  • @fizzkakz , yes you can.

  • @Workhard1994 The triangle requires one arm to be in. Here you can clearly see both of Ken's arms are on the outside.

  • @Workhard1994 One of his arms has to be in for the triangle to work.

  • @Workhard1994 no arm is in

  • @Workhard1994 what you are talking about is the head scissors submission; doesn't work from the guard like that.

  • @Workhard1994 he would have to have one leg under one of the arms

  • @Workhard1994 na his right leg is over the hand..should be under to ge a triangle

  • Hey whats up im Ben Stiller..

  • 1 17 I suck his... ( freudian slip )

  • This COULD be hotter if the dude looked less like he was in planet of the apes...no offense hehe...fun to watch...good moves thnx

  • Damn good video!!!..by far the best no gi pass on youtube, where is your studio located?

  • going to a tournament on april 9th. I am doing gi and no gi. Ive started training no gi the other day. That stuff is hard, but i'm confident that if I just keep practicing I won't be elimated so early

  • In the second variation, how do you stop a triangle choke attempt?

  • Could you make a whole video just on opening the guard please?

    Thanks

  • can you do the same on mount and side controll escape ? I enjoy your videos!!

  • @tballs92 I think u should do it faster

  • every time i try the first pass, when i put my hands into their hips they end up getting wrist control on me by simply grabbing both wrists. im not as strong as the other guys i roll with so it can be hard to fight. how do i work around this to achieve this pass?

  • every time i try this pass, when i put my hands into their hips they end up getting wrist control on me by simply grabbing both wrists. im not as strong as the other guys i roll with so it can be hard to fight. how do i work around this to achieve this pass?

  • those are my 4 basic passes that keep me going.

  • Would it be weird to do BJJ in a pink morph suit?

  • @DangerDarf You sir, even though i have never met you, have my respect.

  • ken youre my best and only bjj teacher (Y)

  • you could not break a guard of somebody with long legs this way.

  • @kenprimo against a guy with a good guard this wouldnt go as planned it would be way harder to break the guard than a turn

  • @Notagayusername10 -dont let me laugh -aint work my boy

  • Hey Ken I like to open the closed guard with the knee in the butt, but I've had much more success with it when I do it standing. However, my problem with it is that my sparring partners have gotten wise to this and when I stand up and start inserting the knee in place they just keep their legs closed and thrust their hips up high, and now I can't seem to get the knee in place anymore. I was wondering what do you recommend doing in such a situation? Thanks!

  • if anybody can answer that please send me a reply. I have slim hips, whenever I use this pass, when I wrench my hips... basically nothing happens. Does anybody know how to make this guard break work for skinnier fighters?

  • @kenprimo No no the guard pass itself yes it would work for i have used it I just dont think you can break a guard that easy especially on a resisting opponent

  • Thanks Ken. :)

  • How are these the slickest passes on youtube? These are the most basic passes there are.Not bad but pretty "bread and butter".

  • @maleeyang thats right

  • @maleeyang "bread and butter" techniques actually work in a fight.

  • @maleeyang basics work best. I train mainly in a traditional standup style (Moo Duk Kwan), and while their are diverse ranges of nifty tricks, in a real fight only the basics work out well. That and kenprimo said this is only part of a dvd. So he's only giving you a taste.

  • @deDqq2Hu Shut your snatch dummy. First off you're replying to a comment from almost a f'n year ago and secondly the name of this video used to be "Slickest no gi guard passes on Youtube". In response to my comment Ken deleted the word slickest from the beginning and now it's just "no gi guard passes on Youtube" so obviously he knows I was right. And now so do you.

  • wow i think i learned this at my BJJ gym!! =)

  • great video. -single underhook, -double underhook, -straight knee, and -cross knee pass complex are the 4 main go to pass variants.

  • Look like Ben Stillers Mexican son from Meet the Fockers.

  • @fbjorn ahahahaha totally agreed!!!!

  • @fbjorn Ken is a great Jiu Jitsu teacher....and your comment about Meet the Fockers was also great. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • great thank you for posting

  • anyone want to roll....i challenge

  • thanks for letting me know about knee up being so imnportant.....

  • bring the knee up....thanks for the tip...lol.. u see me in the ring in 6 months.... - the ninja

  • I think it's funny as shit when people try to give advice to a world champ.

These are basic, useful no-gi guard passes that everyone will use if they don't already. Thanks for the vids - but you know you're gonna get criticized when you don't go into depth about every little thing.

  • hahaha its ben stiller xD

    Good tips!

  • i would suggest that no beginners try that underhook pass, you'll drop yourself in a triangle or the wrong side of a scramble every time... truthfully you'd have to get lucky to pull that pass off.

  • yo ken! these ppl have no idea about BJJ and try to sound like they know what they are talking about lol it just makes me laugh. great video. favorited! love your vids man! keep them coming

  • @dirtoffmyshoulder1 you would, you would just have to remember to be carful on what you do and know your limits. And get with guy's who don't have ego's so that you can learn without getting hurt. Part of ju-jitsu, mma, or any self-defence art is just that. self defence, if you get hurt, you've defeated your purpose

  • There are alot of ways to pass a guard, however your really only pulling through or pulling out. I do like how you do it, however if you have a guy that plays wrist control well or can sweep well it might be a little on the risky side trying to do this pass. However good job, I liked the video

PS. make sure to keep t-rex arms or home alone, don't wanna get locked out ;)

  • Ben Stiller teaching Jiu-jitsu ! LOL

  • the way i do is that u try to stand up and do the exact same thing, 0:50

  • I like and respect jiu jitsu but in mma i have so many counters for what they do although i just started to study it.to beat a bjj person you have to think like one but outside the box.you cant always think "oh i haven't learned something from this position" you gotta take matters in your own hands using common sense.

  • @jumpman366 You're a fuckin moron...

  • @Ineedwords1121 im a moron because im telling the truth about a fighting style i train? yea,i guess im that guy who just talks shit and hasn't been through it.im a freaking white belt giving blues, and purples trouble when i spar.like i said,i love jiu jitsu but im just pointing out to just use your head and not think just because you weren't taught something, you can't try to defend.anyway FUCK YOU!

  • @jumpman366 Oooo he gets upset when I call him out. If you could inference to what I was calling you out on, you would realize it is not a "fighting style you train" that proves ignorance,; it is arrogance.

  • @Ineedwords1121 well indeed you can get cocky when you're good at something,im sorry.im stong, flexible somewhat, and i use my head and techniques that my instructor shows us.why cant i be happy about my little success in this wonderful art and i just went to 7-8 classes so far?i quit recently because im playing football.i was just sharing my opinion on how to make terrific progress in this martial art.be strong, dont give up easily, stretch a lot, use your head/techniques and most of all, RESPECT!

  • @jumpman366 This Ineedwords1121 is a fool troll like the Usenet trolls in the early days. He's a jerk (assuming asshole male) - and NOT a nice person. Keep doing what you're doing... good job!

  • @edv749 If he was that good- after 7-8 classes mind you- he should stick with it and go pro in a couple of years. Hell yeh! I think he should keep doing what he's doing too. Good job to the prodigy!

  • @Ineedwords1121 i am no where near a prodigy, but i am one of the most advanced white belts.another thing ill tell you is that when we spar, they always put me against adults now because im too tough and knowledgable.at my camp we try to pass the guard (with the gi) and the guys on top get swept quickly.me on the other hand,i fight a long battle before i get swept (due to fatigue and length of the struggle).in no gi,im very good i finally caught someone in a guillotine at my last spar, felt good.

  • @jumpman366 Look man, I think it's great that you're taking up BJJ. I love it, but you have to realize that it takes a lot of work to get good. Don't think that you're one of the best until you prove yourself in competition for years. The blues and purples have earned their colors. The browns and blacks have dedicated their lives. Being humble will get you far in anything, especially in BJJ.

  • @Ineedwords1121 sure of course i know that it takes years,im not foolish.im stating what im saying from my camp, not world or even nationwide so hell no im not the best.its guys that train harder and longer than me.all the guys i go up against say im good when we spar in my camp, they dont put me up against kids my age anymore because the very first time they did that i caught him in an armbar and he had to quit the rest of practice for that day.i barely locked the submission in (continuation)...

  • @Ineedwords1121 after the armbar,i realized how important the factors that i have are.im strong for my age,im flexible a bit,use moves i learned and looked up,and i constantly study.its just experience that im missing. after that practice one of the instructors said "you are a beast for your age, take it easy on guys your age..." and patted me on the back. now im translating this to you guys who may want tips on bjj so im just telling you.if you take it as me being a jackass, then hey whatever.

  • @edv749 thank you,at least you understand.

  • @jumpman366 no offense but you really sound like a jackass when you say stuff like this... makes you look like one of those wanna be tough guys who goes to a couple JJ classes and then thinks they are a fighter...

in greatness you will find great humility... there is zero humility in saying crap like this to people you dont know... just saying

  • @Ptrixle dude i have no time nor the audacity to be on the web trying to prove that im the best in bjj and crap because that was never what i said.if you like at my old posts i write down FACTS,if i wanted to be a jackass i would say "aww man, these guys suck ill kick their asses in 2 seconds". now thats a jackass. maybe im just trying to help you guys who may take classes using my experience.i said you should be strong, have heart, use your head, pay attention, and be respectful.now how am i the JA?

  • thats 1 of the guard passes we use at our club

  • I didnt know Ben Stiller taught Jits

  • @fishysushi fuckin hilarious dude, no wonder he seemed to familiar, I was trying to figure out where I've seen the guy before

  • @fishysushi haha thats what i was thinking.

  • @fishysushi I was just thinking that haha.

  • this would work on someone that doesn't know much about bjj submissions.

but getting into position for the sweep(especially the second one) leaves a blatant chance to counter with an armbar or a triangle or even a leg sweep. no hate though.

  • from the pass @ 1:10 when you suck his hips up, stack him. stand on toe, looks over his head. and fall onto one hip into sidecontrol. i leanrt that last week.

  • went to my 1st grappling class last night and we were "rollin" the hardest thing to do is pass the guard

  • why are is everyone hating on the guys jiu jitsu? who cares if its "slick" or not? it's an effective guard pass no matter what your rank.

  • I feel like your head is overly expose around 3:24

  • Appreciate the steps of the correct process/options after you break the guard. Great video. One thing I hate about grappling/MMA is that everyone with a computer thinks they're a badass now. Quit being a "typical" know it all MMA fan. If you already know the move shut the fuck up and keep searching for what you're looking for. Just because you comment on how already know this move no one here is gonna say "Wow douchebag007 must be a real badass, he already know this move..."

    Jackasses

  • Good video. I can't use too much force with my legs due to a knee injury, so these passes look like something I can use. Thumps up!

  • very slick, nice way to pass guard. its the small things that count in this sport and im glad they touched on that. boo yah! gangsta pass.

  • aint shyt slikk about this guard pass

  • Its risky, because if you dont do it 100% right u might get ur self caught in a triangle or a sweep, i would practice this pass untill i can get it right everytime before using it in fights

  • i concur with hold. lame advertising ftl

  • at 3.28 ur head is in danger buut thank´s for the videos!:)sumtimes the most basic is the most effectfull...;)

  • Effective No Gi Guard Passes. There everyone is happy

  • this poor boy getting diddled in all these videos.

  • i like the step through with the knee reversal, opens up to submission and other reversals, thanks man, nice job

  • To all those saying "its not the slickest", attach a video of what you think is the best.

    Thanks Ken, great work.

  • If you learn this to almost perfection it works on every opponent. You don't need fancy stuff, Roger Gracie is the most successful BJJ fighter ever and he relies mostly on perfected basics.

I practice the passes a lot in training.

    Great vid kenprimo

  • Solid Nice Work! Bread & Butter PAsses

  • Real bad audio cant really hear what hes saying.

  • I hate passing guard!

  • people slagging off the basics should go slag off Roger Gracie.

  • @tonymontana19892012 HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHA

  • It looks like they're choreographing a gay porno scene.

  • good basic stuff very effective,, coach Greg Jackson showed me this 5 yrs ago at Jackson MMA in Albuquerque

  • good pass thanks for showing.

  • Great Stuff! Thanks for posting! The Basics are the best. Just watch Roger Gracie and you'll see what I mean!

  • looks like he has some loose ends in his game.. just sain.. this is the pass i use all the time just a lot tighter..o he hella looks like ben stiller..

  • deffintally not slickest and some dude on the street would just punch to in the neck

knee you in the head allsorts of stuff

  • NIce basics!! :)

  • It's a good basic pass, but for my money, the slickest pass on youtube is the Tozi, or Chim Chim no pass.

  • Very nice...i use that first pass all the time..great technique

  • The problem with a lot of these you tube videos is that it doesn't address what the other person is going to do since they're not going to just lay there like that.

  • great vid, thanks !

  • it's great to have a BJJ BB take time to post for the fans. Thank you Ken!

I use this pass a lot...

  • Nice. Great points made on the passing player's focus and base. Thanks, Ken!

  • @tonymontana19892012 damn i was just gonna write the same shit :D

  • imagine that you're not from english speaking country , and you don't understand what he saying... and look at the video again :-D it's look pretty Gay..

    by the way, great vid.

  • ill try it out once i go back to my ju jitsu wonder if it will be effective

  • thx this will help with my guard passing. Can make more guard passing moves? I like how u guys point out mistakes and details!

  • I met this guy at Vitamin Shoppe in Delaware. I sold him some protein. LOL

  • this does not work at all for me. He either will just yank your wrists fordawd when you try to get his pants, or slide up over the knee that is inline with his spine so that i cant push backwards through his gaurd he just slides with me, what am i doing wrong?

  • i didn't know the short dude from night at the roxbury did jiu jitsu

  • is that ben stiller

  • dood ken i never saw this vid dang it!! lol awsome stuff bro

  • I didn't know Ben Stiller did BJJ! lol

  • Great quality...not slick exactly...then again being in side control because this is so realiable is slick enough :P

  • ok so maybe they are basic but the guys trying to help by teaching someone out there something . honestly i have been grappling for years and i had forgotten to keep the elbow to knee on one of the passes . we can become lazy sometimes as we advance and basics win matches and fights so sometimes its good to go back to square one.

  • Thank you for the helpful videos, I'm glad someone is teaching beginners like me

  • Yes, the same Ben Stiller...

  • AT 1:01 I WOULD TRIANGLE HIS ASS LOL

  • Is it possible to just tepee when put into the double leg lock? Grab the wrist pull and basically squeeze the head with your thighs. With the squeeze being strong I could imagine it would make the opponent uncomfortable, also even though it's not a joke, make their breathing difficult.

  • @EliasSmeeus Ive had several students ask me so Ive tried it in live rolling, if your wearing gi pants it makes it a little difficult for him to escape his head but it only works until he gets your hips over and eventually he will pass into side mount.

  • @EliasSmeeus

what works well from that double underhook gaurd pass pass is a "ghetto triange;" dont know if there are any vids of it on here, but we trained it at my school. when there in that position, take your right hand, pass it accross there throat and hook your own right foot, jamming your calf in one side of there neck and your forearm in the other. it works quite well when there not expecting it.

  • @yammyUFC4life

That actually sounds pretty cool! Thanks for that, I'll have to look into that!

  • @EliasSmeeus sure! i looked it up and there are plenty of videos showing it. the key is to get it quickly as they will usually swing your hips to one side, then throw them to the other to pass ur gaurd

  • Dude, it's Ben Stiller doing Jiu-Jitsu!

  • I don't know much about jiu jitsu but can't the guy in the blue shirt only lock in the triangles everyone mentions from butterfly guard, or if he has the ability to adjust his hips. I thought the guy in the white shirt was effectively controlling the hips. I saw the triangle possibility from the guards but not after he broke it. even after the double under you can't lock a triangle. you can try but he'll slip out. I really don't know if i'm right, this is more of a question from me

  • lmao

  • LOL!

  • booo....what is so sick about this??

  • Exactly!

  • i know this guys a legit brown belt, but all i see is triangles everywhere

  • @ColdHearted

this is pretty basic jiu jitsu

  • Hmm... Yeah I guess, but the triangles not some crazy purple belt + move either...

  • Name one time where you see him being open for triangle. (except when he's explaining NOT what to do) As neversubmitt said, these are the first guard passes you learn. Nothing really sick about them though, sorry to the video poster, but definitely something every BJJ practiioner should know.

  • lol he does look like him

  • at the start of the video when breakin the guard allowing the elbow in with ur knee on top allows for the turkey wrap

  • at approximately a minute in, doesn't the guy on the top just give the bottom guy a prime opportunity for a triangle choke?

  • The arms are too far back if you threw a triangle both would fade back and you wouldn't have an arm in at that point. But even if you did connect it in it would be easy for the top guy to step over or switch over into various sweeps so all your keys to finishing the triangle aren't available all while he is constantly improving his position.

  • At 1:01 he does look like he's vulnerable. If he grabbed the left wrist and pulled(quickly or no dice), the one on top would easily fall into a triangle choke. I'm no pro but just saying it looks like a feasible option.

  • @69tael Nah not really, depends on the person and skill level, a decent Jiu Jitsu guy would remember the "2 arms in or 2 arms out" if you remember that while rolling, it will develop your triangle defense nicely.

  • niceee

  • Slick for sure! nice Ken

  • ben stiller does bjj?

  • 2:11 dude...almost set up for a leg bar. im gonna try that

  • about time someone showed how to really pass, I use all 3 and have another one where I poster up and thrust my hips to open the guard, also use the old machado hand on hip jump over pass.

As far as him opening the legs well that will happen on it's own you just need to be patient

  • my bad, i skipped ahead in the video and didnt see that he was breaking the legs open, most of what i saw was done without the feet interlocked....good stuff

  • Comment removed

  • these are closed guard passes??

  • at the beginning he shows you how to break the guard first when in a closed guard. its pretty much the same for the rest of the guard passes. turning your hip out also helps to break the guard easier. there are more advanced guard passes which involve different ways to break the guard first but i always usually end up doing it the easier and more effective way which is shown here.

  • He opens the guard?

  • I use all of Ken's stuff. No need to buy instructional dvds. I just steal his techniques!

    Thanks again Ken!

    PLEASE,PLEASE do a north/south escape video. Please!

  • Wouldn't call this the slickest no gi guard pass on youtube at all.

  • what would you call it.

  • most basic no gi guard pass on youtube

  • thats why they work buddy, watch rickson and the way he passes and kron

  • @kenprimo doesnt make em slick...makes em basic

  • @holdyerground1 yeah i learned those the first day of jiujitsu

  • @kenprimo effective basic passes.... which is still good... not the slickest but good... but good work and thanks for posting... take care and safe training.. pce.

  • @holdyerground1 I would call them some of the most effective.

  • Quite possible you are right. The basics do tend to be quite effective. Slickest guard pass on youtube though? I think not.
