Thanks for posting. Quarry was a true warrior. Nothing negative should be said about a man who's heart made up for his ability. R.I.P. brother Jerry, you left your eternal mark in boxing history. maurice
chuvalo has the frame of a fucking gorilla, what a strong man, a fucking animal,he was a natural 217 pounder of pure frame, not a frankenstein proyect like mike tyson who was packed of muscle,
I loved both of these guys, fantastic fighters. They're also foils to each other. You have the technically sound, tough and sharp counterpuncher in Quarry vs the vicious, come forward brawling of Chuvalo. The thing that bugs me about Chuvalo is that he never boxed to his full abilities I think. He had a pretty good jab really, and he had the power I think (especially to the body), If he had tightened up his D and worked on his footspeed he could have gone even further.
Note all when George got hit in crutch he never whined like a baby, these guys were really tough. Either one around today would be world champion since the 70's Heavyweights have been downhill ever since, only the peak Tyson would have been able to hold his own in their company.
Quarry was pounding out a workman like victory and then after a lazy lucky hook by George connects and a miscount by Quarry screws it up for Jerry. Jerry gets an L by KO. Well a win is a win!!! Jerry and George both came into this bout in great shape and ready to fight. Jerry was faster, hit harder and boxed better but the Chuvalo iron jaw and a miscalculation by Jerry got a win for the toughest boxer who ever laced on a pair of boxing gloves.
Quarry DID get up. Immediately. And then he chose to go to one knee to take the eight count, which Quarry unfortunately allowed to reach ten. He did not appear to be in any danger and unless I am misunderstanding the rules, I think he should have been allowed to continue.
Quarry probably would have won the fight if it wasn't for a mental laspe. It seemed he forgot he had kneeled down after the knockdown in round 8 and he may have thought he was up at the count of eight. But of course the blow was on the temple and he could have been disoriented enough to make him lose track of the count. I remember thinking Quarry had been robbed but, in all honestly, Chuvalo won fair and square as the count of ten is ten. The only ten count he ever took.
@kentaappel yeah some ppl say this is a robbery but i disagree. before the knockout punch, chuvalo had him on the ropes and got him with some good shots, then chuvalo hit him with that left hook on the temple and it just caused quarry to lose track. i'd be disoriented too if i took a left hook flush on the temple from chuvalo!! lol
George 'Juraj Cuvalo" Chuvalo CROATIAN stallion from the region of Ljubuski, Hercegovina !! Greetings to all Canadians and ofcourse my fellow Croatians in Canada
So what is your point ??? His parents were both Croatians. His firstname as also the firstname of his sister are Croatian namely Juraj and Zora and yes he was born and raised in Canada, as many other children of Croatian emigrants who came to Canada for example Joe Sakic and so on...I never said that he's not a Canadian but he is Croatian by blood.
@harambas81 blood means nothing, its all about the streets you walked. Toronto born & raised. the man barely even speaks croat. & has probably never spent any significant time there.
Good fight. This was prime Quarry in action right here, showing the kind of form that later derailed a legit up-and-comer in Mac Foster. Chuvalo's game as always and also proved to have a pretty effective left jab as well (should've used it more often IMHO). Too bad Quarry lost the match by not standing at the count of 9 after getting knocked down in the 7th or else he would've most likely went on to outpoint Chuvalo. Rematch could've finally settled it, but it never happened.
Nobody fights like this today. Everyone is afraid to mix it up. Not these guys. The 60's and 70's had great fighters two, three levels deep in the division. Either of these guys would be champion today.
This may be the best fight in George's career. This or the win over DeJohn, or the 2nd fight with Ali (though Ali won, it was close).
I saw this fight on TV when it happened. Quarry was easily beating Chuvalo on points when he got knocked down and inexplicably missed the count, getting up at the count of ten instead of nine. Jerry blew the fight!
both of them was hard, strong and tough fighters!!! Quarry he never reach a heavyweight title, but it was because of bad luck, and maybe bad managment!
IMO: There are two guys who would hold world titles if they were active today. They are much better boxers than men like Vlad Klitschko, Chageav and Valuev. I'd also give Quarry and Chuvalo a very good chance of beating Vit Klitschko.
i agree with you completely! he would have destroyed the guys in the heavyweight division today. he was a small heavywieght for his day and would be even smaller today, but his heart and determination would have prevailed!.he was touted as a banger most of his career but he possossed incredible boxing skills and had a chin like an anvil! i would love to see him chop down the klitscho bros. like two big trees were he a fighter today. he's definitely one of the all-time best!
@dubberdoodee Quarry was a counter puncher his whole career, he was not known as a powerpuncher( he did have power), or an infighter. Quarry had a temper and when caught hard early he would fight like he did in the Frazier fights and in that case he fought Fraziers fight not his usual style..
There's only room for ONE token white guy in this heavyweight division! Impressed with Querry's very deliberate boxing skills. You can see the wheels turning in his head when he's counter-punching. Chuvalo looks like an over the hill BEAST. That man fought forever and he seems to be the only fighter from the 70's heavyweights along with Foreman who still has ALL their marbles today.
@FijneWIET - true true..I guess Foreman is the only guy you get to hear and see a lot to really know. I just watched Foreman vs Lyle yesterday..man that was impressive to see Lyle totally level Foreman and to see Foreman have the will to get back up and win that fight.
Quarry was a warrior. Watch any of us fights. He was simply outclassed by Ali. I will say this scorzeny45 for the white guys back then, they were a hell of a lot tougher than some of the white fighters today, especially heavyweights. Or should I say American heavyweights.

@tinrib656 I'd have to respectfully disagree. Both did pretty damn well against Patterson. Quarry did better against Foreman, but Chuvalo did better against Ali. Chuvalo was also never knocked down in 97 pro fights... Every top 10 fighter from that era was phenomenal.
atmoi666. Just a correction for you if I may. Quarry never fought Foreman. Apart from that I agree with your sentiments. It's interesting how styles make fights which, I suppose, is why Chuvalo had good fights with Ali but seemed to be 'made to order' for Frazier and Forman. Whatever, both Quarry and Chuvalo were (and Chuvalo still is) a credit to boxing. These guys fought for peanuts compared to what is paid to top line fighters today. They both deserve the respect of fight fans like us.
@alkira001 Chuvalo got beat up by Ali easily. Those fights were Gym exercises for Ali. No Official gave Chuvalo more than 3 rounds. Ali beat the crap out of Chuvalo.
@bangitslo Then why did Ali call it the toughest fight of his career? Why did Ali get sent to the hospital by Chuvalo? Why was it the first time in Ali's career that he had to fight the distance?
You make no sense and not even Ali would back you up on this one.
@alkira001 Oh please, that's a stupid comment. Quarry was a more accomplished prizefighter than Chuvalo and a more talented boxer/puncher; but they were both tough and both were obviously world class.
I understand Chuvalo was a nice guy and tough fighter but Quarry was much more talented and shouldnt have lost this fight. Unless your related to Chuvalo its pretty clear to see.
Yes, there's no doubt about it, both were great boxers and both would have won world titles in today's boxing environment. Chuvalo has been lauded many times for his courage and durability. He deserves this praise.
Chuvalo was one tough bastard. Even Foreman couldn't knock him off his feet. He's had a tragic life since his career's been over--two sons OD'ed and his wife commited suicide--but physically and mentally he still looks great. He's going around speaking at high schools about drugs now.
The winner of this fight was suppose to meet Foreman.Chuvalo pulled off the freakish upset! If Jerry would have boxed like he was suppose to this incident would have not happened.Wrong move trying to ko or floor Chuvalo(Iron chin)!!
Quarry had many chances to fight for championship, He lost to a mediorce Jimmy Ellis who than lost to Frazier....Chuvalo was better than Quarry..Chuvalo beat Patterson but lost to a NYC hometown dec.
I doubt it was an accident. It took Quarry nearly 20 years to admit he lost. He was dizzy and lost track of the count because Chuvalo probably made his brain wobble when they were on the ropes right before the knockdown. Also, the final punch caught him pretty well on the chin and you see Quarry's legs lose balance. He didn't fall over by accident and he didn't lose count by accident. Both of these happened because he was dizzy from punches. He lost this fight fair and square.
He jumped up right at 9 to find out the ref had called it. That is definitley an accident.
He was trying to be smart by taking a 9 count. Fighters get knocked down all the time and are in much worse shape than Quarry was there yet they continue.
It was a good punch and he was shook by it. Chuvalo did win the fight fair and square, he did what he was supposed to do.
Thanks so much for uploading this! Both are amazing fighters. Watch how Chuvalo will hit Quarry with his free arm anytime Quarry holds his other arm. You don't see many fighters today do this.
Thanks for posting. Quarry was a true warrior. Nothing negative should be said about a man who's heart made up for his ability. R.I.P. brother Jerry, you left your eternal mark in boxing history. maurice

It was just a mistake by Jerry or the ref.

Jerry had too much talent to lose this fight to Chuvalo. Sometimes Quarry could be a flake.

a serious shame they never had a rematch.

Thanks so much for uploading this! Both are amazing fighters. Watch how Chuvalo will hit Quarry with his free arm anytime Quarry holds his other arm. You don't see many fighters today do this.
