I have one 1 yr old female rat named prince abubu and I was wondering if its safe or a good idea to get her a friend like a baby female rat. She had her sister gary until gary got sick and died a few months ago. She seems fairly happy and cheerful but those nights where im not here are the times Im worried shes lonely.

Im turning my room into a rattie play room, it's still kinda sucks but its improving slowly :3 I still have 3 weeks while i wait for the new rats to adjust and do the whole quarantine thing. Then when they're all settled with Gir they can begin play time. ^^

Wish I could get rats, heh. Mum's allergic so I had to get hamsters... they are EVIL. I've raised squirrels for 13 or more years (babies that fall out of trees during hurricanes and people bring them in) and let them go and only ONCE did I ever get bitten (it was an injured juvenile). The hamsters actually SEEK you out and try to bite you.

I have a girl and a girl. Girls are much more active, boys are lap rats. I chose not to get two boys because they will scent mark things and I am pretty sensitive to scents. I would have loved boys anyways though :D

@lilbeatch thats what happened to my dad when he was a kid. He had to pet rats they escaped and increased the rat population by 5000? The got into his family's soda machine and breeded there so everytime you put a dollar in you would get a rat instead of a water. No boys and girls together!

Is he biting hard? Rats tend to 'nibble' out of curiosity. This is normal and not a sign of being mean. If the rat is truly aggressive, you will have to spend lots of time with it to get it to be gentle. Remember to speak softly and calmly while you are around the rat and see if it does not eventually calm down. I had a female adopted at about 1 yr old and was able to get her to stop biting, but it took time and patience.

Lmao ... no no. Please don't let your friend put you off rats. That is not a rat at all ... rats will only ever bite if they are scared. Handle them often at the start and never feed through the cage bars and you'll quickly end up with a rattie that doesn't even nip. Instead they're more likely to lick you to death :P

Its about having confidence in their abilities. My boys are watched very closely, especially when up high and i've had to catch a couple of times but they are always well cared for. My girls on the other hand are nuts and amazing at it too, i have no problem with letting them do anything they think they can without being there to catch, they have far more ability than i could ever have imagined. Test the water with your rats and see how they get on, but certaintly watch closely to start with :).

They can't run on my floor yet since I need to close some holes on my wall so I let them walk on my desk instead till my room is safe for my little girls.

Bijou keeps falling and jumping off things XD she jumped a few times of her cage and actually fell 2 times cuz I couldn't catch her, she wasn't hurt or anything but shes a real daredevil and a bit of a clumsy rat. Pebbles is rather lazy then tired.

Never feed them through the bars of the cage, if you want to feed whilst inside the cage then open the cage and put your whole hand in. They may nip lightly when you first get them (all pets have to learn) but that will quickly stop and turn to licks. If handled regularly and well they should never bite :)

This was the start of me setting up the "rat room". They have the spare room to free range in, its been rat proofed and then since then i just keep adding more and more to it for them to explore :). Nice and safe :)

What do you feed your rats by the way? Mine get Webbox Super Supreme dog kibble, because I refuse to buy rat food because most of it is alfalfa. Just wondering if anyone else has good ideas for food for them.

I use Burgess Supa Excel Rat Food, another kibble but rat food this time. Whilst they'll eat and enjoy the dog kibble I'd highly doubt it was giving them all the nutrients that they need :S.

Oh, right. To be honest just because rat food says 'rat' on the bag, it doesn't really mean it's the right diet, rats will survive on literally anything and those commercial rat foods have all the nutrients squeezed out of them at the time of production, they are made from the left-overs of rabbit & hamster food in factories & all the meat products come from battery farmed chickens and turkeys, sorry if that sounds rude but it's true i know someone who works for supreme & they all do it the same

No its a fair point and often true but the type i listed in my previous comment is definitely not like that. Various certifications on the packet, plus reccomended by vets, and that includes a verbal reccomendation from my own vet. Just have to hunt around for something you are happy to use, vets will be able to reccomend good products to you too if you ask, and hence my concern about the dog kibble, there are options out there.

I've got quite a few of them now, they're actually parrot perches and should be sold at most pet stores. They have a metal rod down the middle so you can bend them to any shape you desire. Alternatively ebay is a good source for them too. I can send a link if you can't find them.

When they were younger they did but as they've gotten used to us and the surroundings (rat room) they really hardly ever do anymore. Rats can be litter trained if your rats don't pick it up naturally but in my experience they seem to naturally get it. They are very clean and tidy critters

Well ... rats do all the vacuuming and washing up, and even wash the cars at the weekend hehe.

Rats r amazingly clean creatures & almost no expense once you've got the cage. They are sweet and loving critters and bags of fun. clean them out once a week and change the bedding daily or so and you'll not ever be bothered by a smell, they are just the most intelligent critter ever and will give back to 100 times more love than you can imagine :). Your whole family will never regret getting them.
