  • those bongos give me the chills.

  • the drummer is just insanely talented. wow.

  • is that Kevin Bacon on drums?

  • @wback19 nooooo Michale shrieve

  • ya me prendí.

  • saw this exact group the same year in Munich's Circus Krone...amazing!

  • Just digging Michael Carabello and Jose Chepito Arias - I'd have paid just to see the two of them alone, man...

  • Mike was not that great of a drummer and he had to compete with Ginger Baker and Keith Moon in those days

  • Great Video,Santana's best line up...Amazing

  • Heroic post. This is their best performance of Soul Sacrifice since Woodstock.

    In awe . .

  • true, true stink...one of the very best...right with mitch mitchell and bj wilson

  • Mr Shreive roomed with Tower or Power's David Girabaldi in the 60s..No wonder he's a badass!!! Micheal fused latin/swing/funk/african all together for Carlos and created the rock solid foundations for Santana to play some of the most influencial music of the 20th century. So yes, Mr Shreive deserves high praise amongst great drummers of this era..His creativity and skill were jazz influenced but he had the brains to take what he already knew, and elevate it, that takes great talent AND vision

  • @estinky

Very Well Said! I very often lump Michael Shreive and Danny Serephine (Chicago) together as drummers that WELL influenced their bands and never were given the credit. I'm, sure there are more!?

  • @anthonyvoneckstein18 serephine was great w/ Chicago....as was terry kath..it's a shame that Chicago went top 40..it was their ruination. Michael shreive said in an interview that he wasn't all that impressed w/his own drumming at woodstock. I thought he was great, especially that he was just a kid at the time....

  • Mr Shreive roomed with Tower or Power's David Girabaldi in the 60s..No wonder he a badass..

  • Holy shit, that's the roots of Carlos Santana's power and soulfull virtuosity! All his musicians are "in" the music, that's the magic why you can't play only the notes and try to cover this smash hit.

  • @ Carlamusiclover I'm amazed anyone wouldn't know the significance of Michael Shrieve. He's a much more significant player ,musically than Bonham. You must be reading bad music journalism if he's not getting props .He's also the one who turned Carlos Santana onto Miles Davis and John Coltrane. I thnk Carlos' nervousness shows,he's really not playing his best.None of melodic development his solos are known for, he tries and then breaks off.Sorry,he's my fave player,I know what he can do

  • Isn´t this the 1970 Albert Hall concert.?With Eric Clapton,John Lennon,Paul Mc

Cartney,Keith Richards.Mick Jagger among with so many artists and celebrities...in the audience. And Carlos and Santana played so well- thinking about how Carlos described this concert.and how many Alka-Seltzers he had before the concert.

  • very inspirational video, I loved watching it

  • anyone who dislikes this is an idiot....

  • Carlos Santana's facial expressions haha. you can tell he really feels the music

  • even crazier than at woodstock!

  • HEy his guitar was smoking

  • great video

  • better the woodstock version but still be a nice video

  • chepito areaaa nicaraguensee.el ke asesoro a santana combinar la musica afroamericanaa ajuuuaaaaa.muebanlooooo .hi los tinbaleeeeeee

  • Can you believe we get to enjoy this great music. That's all that really matters here, just sit back and enjoy.

  • michael schrieve was 15 1/2 at woodstock

  • @skydog81

Not even close. Check your facts first.

  • @cfg7777 Read that somewhere if not whats your fact on his age

  • omg....the percussion player has a razor cut covered with tissue on his face.

  • This was real music from Santan, his new stuff is terrible.

  • @fanqueen

You know that saying about opinions are like a--holes...?

  • @dadduorp You know that you are a stupid poor guy; because there is nothing incorrect about expressing an opinion. What? cant I like his new stuff or do I have to like everything that he do? An I am not able to expres that?

I cant belive how stupid you are

  • @fanqueen

Oh. I thought you were specifically referring to Michael Shrieve's music. If you meant "Santana" (the band or Carlos the individual) you're right. The new stuff is pretty cheesy. Sorry.

  • @dadduorp Yeah, you misunderstood something. This stuff is amazing, it was mistic!

  • very best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!vi

  • magic.......so unique different from the square "music" around at that time......and now.

  • this is so amazing, it's ridiculous

    youtube.com/v/WgdjDgX784g?fs=1&amp

  • You ever notice...that Santana isn't as much playing as he is conjuring much like JC (John Coltrane) before him...

  • how could any body not like this? what,s funny is i,m 100% irish, 62 yrs young, and i still love carlos santana,s music, pure ,spritual, fun !!!!

  • i,m the old irishman that loves santana i was at woodstock ,i saw carlos rock behind acid, messk, physill , oh yea he kicked ass big time 11111

  • Something tells me this is the gig that Carlos said to himself after "man, I need to stop doing so much acid before gigs"

  • cigarette? that looks like a j

  • @pinto4646 yea, a filter tip J !

  • Dude 3:10 or whenever the solo starts he holds his cigarette with the guitar and its was sick.

  • The drum solo edit-out was super lame.

  • It is so incredible when you see so much passion and you can see somebody who really loves what he does and above that is so good at it.

  • SAKEN EL TEKILAAAA

  • albert hall!

is this when carlos goes "... those in the cheaper seats can scrape your guiros... the rest of you can just rattle your cabasas.."

  • fat joint on the top of the guitars neck

  • The energy is just "Whoesque"...in a Sausalito kind of flavour...

  • goose good god

  • WOW!!! This would be one of the concerts I'd fly back to if I had a time machine. Everyone is in top form. David Brown(speaking of forgotten??)looks so cool and Michael Shrieve just nails it as always. Carlos is totally "supernatural". The British audience was way ahead of the US in appreciation of Latin-flavored rock as the thunderous roar demonstrates.

the beat at the beginning is great

  • oh my god what a blast that would have been...

  • I was 10 at this time... that's pretty trippy... the song is one of the most excellent songs ever...

  • @Starlitblond GIRLS GET ORGASMS ON THIS ONE

  • Well, I'd say Mike Shrieve is a GREAT drummer. Apparently he also played with Pat Travers, who is pretty much "rock" all the way? Doesn't matter: good music is good music!

  • LOVE IT!!!....and the smell of burning incense.

  • Michael Shrieve da beast.

  • Woodstock version is better but this is historical

  • The Woodstock version is much better I think.

  • Yeah, a lot better.

  • @calvinandhodge THE SANTO DOMINGO VERSION IS BETTER THAN ALL OF EM

  • yer it is amazing the woohstock version!!

  • nessa epoca não se ouvia o contrabaixoi.

    Sentia -se

  • michael and dino dinali of the young rascals never mentioned much at all

  • Far out, man.

Notice the Marlboro red cig burning on Carlos's guitar neck.

    Pretty groovy times, indeed.

  • This is SO good. You don't attempt to this kind of shows nowadays

  • I love the drum solo in this song. But how come people don't give props to the conga solo. It's also amazing.

  • where did you find this????

  • Why is it that Michael Shrieve's NEVER mentioned among the forefathers of Modern Rock Drumming? Along with Bonham and all those great drummers from the late-60's, he raised the bar and helped break so much ground!

  • Michael Shrieve and Mitch Mitchell are always forgotten... :(

  • Agree 100%!!!

  • @oclero never ;)

  • @Carlamusiclover Because Santana didnt chart as well as Led Zeppelin or the Who and most people remember songs over individual players. If its a song they know and like, they will be more likely to praise the players. If more people like a song, the band members become more exalted because they are more familiar to the population at large.

  • Why this great band had such poor lead guitar?

  • @rafanusam what asuch poor comment,

  • @Carlamusiclover

and why this great band had such poor lead guitar?

  • @Carlamusiclover Mike Shrieve was one of the baddest drummers out there...and quite young too, I might add. Not sure why he is not mentioned with the various greats, but he certrainly influenced me and my approach to drumming. along with Peartr, Rich, Gadd, among others......a TRUE great!!

  • @weeniedogfan I totally agree with you, he's one of my favorites, too; it's cool to know that after a long time since he entered the business, Michael remains very well respected nowadays not only by drummers, but musicians from all around. And I think that counts a million times more when you consider he was never some company or magazine's "poster favorite".

By the way, I have a Gadd poster in my apartment, so no pun intended on the 3 other drummers that you mention, hehe...

  • @Carlamusiclover

you are so right..For us born and raised in SF, HE was the one..Maybe Dave Garibaldi, from Tower of Power..Guys out here had to really be able to play, which TOP and the cats from Santana all did..

  • @Carlamusiclover For the same reason Terry Kath from Chicago wasn't recognized for the kick ass guitarist he was....

  • 45 Other people + me are agreeing he was something out the ordinary. Under-rated by the press but not by the public

  • @rogerbodger33 Good point! Maybe he's not mentioned because he never was associated with a crazy style of living, which the press lives for. But a great musician will always be acknowledged by those who care to listen.

  • @Carlamusiclover

agreed. many genius musicians contribute themselves completely to the *band*, like Martin Barre did for Tull.

  • @Carlamusiclover

Went to Jr. High School with his Nephew in S.F. back in the day. They had a Santana Platinum Album at the House.

  • @Carlamusiclover dont forget lee michaels and frosty

  • @Carlamusiclover

because he wasn't an alcoholic junkie like the rest...he was a great drummer..playing drums in genre that he had nobody to pull from..he invented latin jazz rock drumming..he was a groundbreaking drummer..but he wasn't in a high profile band like the rest.it .Mike captured 600,00 people who never heard of this band before..with dynamics and poise plus everyone is on Bonhams dick for drumming..dude was nothing special and played boring snooze fest solos same licks over and etc

  • yeah !!!!!!!!!! how about adding this whole show ??

  • OH! that bass thumbs up?

  • THE DRUMS FOR ME IS AWSOME !!!!!!!!

  • This is awesome! COOOOL!

  • Santana's guitar is smokin' in more ways than one!!

  • When I was young I thought the greatest thing in the world would be to be in this rhythm section - now I think when I die, I want to come back and be in a rhytm section just like this.

  • Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • do it! keep it alive! it's circular!!!!!!! aYYYYYY!!!!!

  • Wasn't Neal Schon in the band by this time?

  • No,

He came on during the third and greatest album of all time.

  • This is kick a$s stuff. Good music!

  • Esta es la verdadera banda Santana ,los originales, los propios ,salud.

  • Is this out on a DVD or something? Thanks for uploading, great stuff

  • great, Thanks!

  • ooooooooooooooooo!!!

  • lo maximooooooooooooooooo gracias carlitossssssssss te amooooooooooooo

  • This was THE best lineup.

  • WIcked stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dantesque

  • Santana el 17 de Marzo 2009 en concierto en GUATEMALA... jejejejeje

  • too good what a gem of a find -thanks

  • Fuck!!!!! Where did you find this gem?????

    Thanks for posting!

  • SANTANA ES LO MEJOR

  • eso es ese es santana el mejor

  • the band is on fire here (as usual, it seems) and the crowd is really loving it. it seems like the band is bringing all this energy and the crowd is responding with equal levels...listen to those cheers! looks like concert-going used to be a much more awesome experience than it is now...not only so much more great music around, but it seems people were also into it more and more willing to get caught up in it all...

  • Great post, great show! Thanks for posting this one, though the date doesn't seem quite right. If this is the Royal Albert Hall concert, then this should be April 18th, 1970

  • Viva Nicaragua y Mexico. El timbalero era Nica y el ritmo de Jingo viene de Leon, Nicaragua.

  • Que gran oportunidad tuvo con tocar en la banda "Santana", la gente de Nicaragua deben estar muy orgullosos de Chipito.

  • drummer mike schrieve

watch the woodstock 1969 he was famous at there only 19 years old. those performance is very raw have different with here

  • Michael Shrieve.

  • His drum solo at Woodstock was the greatest of all time.

  • @Gvieto yes sir ...

  • @Gvieto i was there , your right on the money, never been , i don,t think wr,ll ever see that kind of soul ,pure gut feeling thru the drums, in our lfe time, hope i,mn wrong , cozy cole , john henrey bonham, all of carlos santana,s drummers, their have been soooo many greats, are we luckey ,or what!!

  • @fayboypat You can say that again. The best female drummer I ever saw was Shiela Escovedo (Peter's daughter) on an awards show playing the Glamourous Life and kicked some cheeks with the flaming drumsticks. Although I did not like her salty languauge onstage. Yes we are lucky to see Carlos Santana. He is very special.

  • @Gvieto No kidding!

  • yeah man. and they were all trippin balls!

    its amazing!

  • Who's the drummer ?

  • Definitely the music today is crap. What a wondeful period. The best music of the world. No gangs, only peace & love. Now there are many awful music for sample rap, regaetton, bachata, I mean awful music. Poor young people(18-28 years old).

  • So true. I'm 60 yrs. old and also there were so many free outdoor concerts all across the world back then. Days gone by and what is being said in the lyrics today would be considered hate mongoring filth.

  • I'm early 20's. Since I found out in high school that the only music coming out is crappy metal and rap and other lame genres of "rock", I went back to the blues and discovered the true world of rock'n'roll. There's is enough good/great music created between 1920 and 1980 to last over a lifetime of listening, so why bother with this new junk they put out. Music has lost its soul, I'm afraid.

  • Not only do people not know music, they don't know literature or art or even how to express themselves with feeling.the shit we've had to endure is in line with the promotion of science over art.Not surprising that the ipod zombies can only dig squealing electronic loops.

  • obviously, you are not a scientist. science is art.

  • Err ok but obviously you have limited understanding of the state of mechanical vs creative pedagogy but your vague quip is appreciated.

  • Mechanics and art work together. Ever heard of two guys named Ralf and Florian?

  • I am a scientist, and many of my colleagues express themselves creatively and artistically. Most of them appreciate art of one form or another. Scientists have been among the most creative people to have lived in every age and have contributed to society as much as any one else - artist or not. Most people are taught to appreciate neither science nor art. Real scientists must be creative to be successful, and creative pedagogy is used in doctoral-level training in the sciences.

  • Greatly said

  • IS THERE A ORIGINAL VIDEO OF THIS?

  • You sure this is 71??

  • greater than wodstock!!!

  • Yeah...good video. I just saw Santana at the MGM Grand in Vegas on Oct. 4th and they jammed big time. This is the song they opened with and it sounded freakin' great! They played for 3, yes 3 hours. Talk about a great show, it was one of the best I've seen, and I've seen alot of shows in my day!

  • good clip but: no shrieve solo (tragic) and it looks like carabello cut himself shaving with a rusty butter knife. not sure if that's a joint on carlos' guitar but it surely looks like one! carlos seemed off but good stuff anyway.

  • R.I.P DAVID BROWN

  • Only 60.000 views to this excelent video?

    What happens to people nowadays?

  • hate to say it but I think many of them are dead

  • google zeitgeist and you'll know whats happening to them lol.

but if you don't wanna watch a 2 hour long movie heres a simple answer. they're dumbasses

  • I don't know, but im 17 and think that the music today is crap. Thanks to my dad for enlightening me with his good music

  • yea i know what u mean same here bro i think music 2day is total shit 2, its good 2 know im not alone!!!!

  • There's no drum solo on this one.

  • need a little help, saw a video live concert from Carlos Santana where the drummer flipped his sticks in the air to anougher or to Carlos then cought them and played with water on the drums... Would love to know what video that was? Please help!

    Dennis

  • i saw it to and i have the same problem

  • Santana - Live in Mexico 1993

  • AWESOME!!! ...i like more the woodstock version though! :)

  • Michael Shrieve: born 1949

    Kevin Bacon: born 1958

So Kevin Bacon is a Shrieve look-a-like ;)

  • I think he looks him.

  • that weed joint at the end of his guitar is a fatty..

  • hell yeah santana!

  • rock on.

  • wtf is that on the guys face at excatly 6:18 mole? eww lol

  • That's the father of Shiela E of the Prince band

  • That's a Marlboro. Joints don't have the classic gold end by the butt. Not that I would know any of that :)

  • Check carlos weed joint on the guitar end

  • michael shreives: insane drummer, and kevin bacon look-a-like

  • hahhahahahhahahah!! Completely Agree with you!! I thought I was the only one who noticed it

  • Would'nt it be great if some "Look a likes" could get together and play all the old Santana songs with the same raw energy and go on tour?

  • Too many clone bands now.

  • Did you hear Portland Oregons Cinco De Mayo this year is having a smoking Santana cover band? The guitarist looks and plays like Carlos and he's a Chicano rocker! Michael Shrieve lives in portland and someone is telling him about the gig and imagine if he sits in on drums and plays the solo to Soul Sacrifice there at the waterfront? OMG!!

Anyways I'm the guitarist in the band... I have always wanted the chance to secretly be Carlos and it's finally happening!!!

    FJR

  • if that happened my head would explode into candy

  • Actually Michael lives in Seattle and is the annual host of the Bumbershoot festival when he's not at his LA residence. Which puts him very close to Portland anyway, it like what a thirty minute plane ride?

  • Time ago on a Santana concert I occasionally met Michael Shrieve :)

I was just without words, but I could tell him what I felt inside of me.. and I said:

Michael :) Man it's such a honor to meet you! I loved your drum solo back to Woodstock times, thank you for everything..

I admit that I first didn't recognize him, he's a bit older now and doesn't have long hair anymore :)

  • grande santana
