  • Micro beveling a longsword, what do you think of that?

  • how old are you? aren't you be a little too young to be dealing with knives?

  • uhh dude am i going be ok i was doing this and got some metal on a open cut cuz i cut my figner wit it

  • Ireland, FTW!

  • Your knife is as Sharp as Japanese Knife !!!! Great Vid!

  • thank fucking god a kid on youtube who actually knows what hes talking about

  • what no edge test to show us how sharp it is ?? :-)

  • 'I don't use oil because studies have shown'.......

this kid is how old and knows about Juranitch's tests?

great job mate! Keep up the good work.

I wish I knew this much about sharpening at your age lol

  • @DarkLordVincent

Oil for certain stones is absolutely necessary in regards to abrassive grit reduction.

For example. An Arkansas sharpening stone in rought grit would just soak up oil, and also not do enough work, BUT the same Arkansas stone in "FINE" grit to give a polished edge will produce a FINER edge ABOVE the grit the stone is rated at with the use of oil which fills in the cavitys of stone grit pits. End result is a finer edge! It's said anything above 6000grit is useless!

  • @DarkLordVincent

This young kid does a swell job on producing an accurate video. However using Japanese Water Stones , and being a knife maker. I use microscopes and loops in my videos to check edges. I can honestly tell you if you have a microscope or loop to SHARPEN AWAY FROM EDGE. In this case he is sharpening into the edge. Which makes fast work on the blade, but if you wish to acheive a finer edge sharpen AWAY from the edge and not into it. Which de-groves the blades edge!

  • if you push too hard you'll roll the edge over.

  • I will make you a small little 4" hand forged 5160 knife with deer bone handle. Specially just for you. I normally charge 120$ for such a knife, but for you little man. I will let you have a hand forged 5160 small fixxed blade for 50$+ S\H, AND I will upload all the videos of me forging it to youtube, AND send you a DVD to watch on your TV of me making your little knife!

Then make a sharpening video using it. Thats all I would ask for giving you such a deal. Just send me a message.

  • Keep up your knife sharpening videos young man.

If you ever want a 5160 knife like the ones I make in my videos let me know. I will make YOU a very special deal sir! One I will make with no one else. So long as you make a video sharpening it, and give me credit!

Keep in your knife interest you will be a knife sharpening rock star!

My knives will hold your razor sharp edge .. even if your chopping bricks with them :). Check my channel out.. let me know if you want a knife 86th.

  • I am a custom knife maker, I have video's of my knives chopping steel bars, cutting 2x4's in half three times, and still shaving hair off my arms.

What I want to say here. Is this kid at his age has very strong points, and his enthusiasm on sharpening knives is second to none. I will be passing around this kids channel for others to watch. Im 28yrs old, and I want to commend this young gentlmen for his time making this video and sharing it with all of us!

    THANK YOU!

  • hey mate i really like your style of vids you are doing.

Honestly though it will be as dull as before, maybe even worse^^ it sounds like your sharpening your knife on the pavement.... sounds heartbreaking for the knife sakes ;) how about using some water with the stone or just get a finer one? especially because you are using a waterstone.... no offence but in my opinion users are supposed to give advide :)

    keep the vids coming!

  • @BushcraftGuy

As a neo tribal metal smith I must commend this young mans sharpening knowledge.

I have checked your channel as wel Bushcraft.. I am a knife maker on the survivalist boards, and multiple knife making communities so we have probably seen each other before. Anyways to understand this young man and his impressive knowledge on knife sharpening you would have to watch ALLLL the sharpening videos he took the time to make and share with us. 86th has got some flaws, but I'm IMPRESSED

  • @CodyOebel neo tribal metal smith...sounds like bullshit to me :)

  • @CriterionCoIIection

Google My name. Watch my youtube Videos, and then google Neo Tribal Metal Smiths Association.

Then youll see who is the fool, full of BS. Im not out to insult people, but before you just open your mouth and say something foolish investigate first and understand the appropriate measure to take with your comment. Not to mention I am a known smith in the Knife making network. So alas please "GOOGLE", and I forgive your sharp tounged words, if you have questions just ask.

  • could your do a video on how to sharpen a hatchet/Axe?

  • I like your water stone from japan :-) this is 40 grid? lol

  • Enjoyed your clip, but your a bit misguided. Join "British Blades Forum" , a wealth of knowledge and advice, and very friendly and fun. Tell your Ma to keep quiet and stop bitting your nails!!! Oil that stone!! Recon your a star for the future. If you can sing give Cowell a bell!! Cheers mate.

  • @stripymccatpuss Can you explain to me why you think my stropping technique is awful and why my video is "laughable" in your opinion?

  • Comment removed

  • @stripymccatpuss When stropping you do not need a consistent angle because you are not trying to establish a bevel or remove much metal, you are trying to remove a burr, the leather of the strop will not greatly impede the sharpness of your blade if your angle is not consistent because it is unable to remove much metal.

There is not set pressure when stropping whether you use heavy or light pressure it will not make much of a difference because you are only trying to remove a burr.

  • @86thmountmerrion Sorry, but your explanation in this comment is completely wrong. a strop can and will dull a knife fast if done incorrectly depending on what polishing compounds you are using. Like the Accent mate. ;)

  • @stripymccatpuss Please don't try and criticize people if you do not know what you are talking about.

  • Comment removed

  • @stripymccatpuss what the hell is sn "amerurish"??? You are a grown man who has ten videos about his cat, telling a little kid that his methods suck when you dont even HAVE a sharpening or stropping video. Not to mention that you cant spell for crap.

  • Comment removed

  • no affence but when your sharpening the blade towords you on the rod. the angle of the blade is completly rong. or ''completly horable''

  • @hellopeaplz No offence, but you can't spell. Horable would be horrible, rong is wrong, completly is completely, towords is towards. Stop criticizing other people when you are stupid yourself.

  • @75SilentWarrior big deal i cant spell very well. cry about it faggot. i bet you looked up most of the words you just sayed to me.

  • @hellopeaplz I didn't have to look any up, I'm not a hypocrite, You're the one who was crying by the angry way you responded. And calling me a cigarette, really, great insult. Fix your mistakes before criticizing others techniques.

  • Sweet video!

  • what is the use of a honing rod?

  • @Darkofdeath5 It adds a micro bevel and removes any burrs that could be left on the edge and also gives the edge "bite"!

  • @86thmountmerrion It only adds a micro-bevel if you sharpen at a steeper angle than you did on the stone, which you shouldn't do. And a micro-bevel is not desirable when you have a secondary bevel maybe on a scandi ground blade.

  • @75SilentWarrior When using a ceramic rod by heightening the angle you will not add much of a micro bevel because the fine ceramic doesn't cut very fast, if you were to leave the bevel flat you would have to remove far more metal which would be slow with a ceramic rod and also the slightly steeper ceramic honed bevel will add more bite.

  • you actually do want to turn the knife with a curved edge, the reason being if you sharpen the same knife quite often you'll wear the tip out making the tip thinner until ultimately the knife will be shorter. You want to turn the knife always on a curved edge, you'll keep the same edge...hope this helps. Other than that excellent video. With the proper pressure you can use that cheap stone to render a fine shaving edge...it's all technique

  • Ha Ha ...Alright Whatever!

  • seen your vid a lot and want to tell you as a young age...you did wrong..but not too late..don't want to be such a internet teacher here too much but ....just do everything as same but sharpening opposite direction....also press with the tip of your finger where the edge contact the stone..........great kid

  • @nampolmee By dragging the edge on a bench stone you will create a far larger burr than what you would create when pushing, so then when it is removed you'll remove more of the sharp edge and end up with a blunter knife..most experts will agree,

So by using this method I'm not doing it wrong I'm just using a better technique!

  • if u look at the blade u will see the burr, it will look like a little wire on the edge of the blade, thats why u leather strop it to get that off, then it will be really sharp

  • how do you know when u have a burr

  • Lil Kool Breeze it was a Stone grove my man. Cut something with the knife next time so we can see its razor sharp tho...

    ~Debt

  • Thanks!

  • i have that knife lol

  • This demonstrates that it's not knives that are dangerous but their users. I believe it's better to teach safe methods to young people than to avoid the use of and you are clearly proof that it works! You have a maturity beyond your years.. well done.

  • Thanks alot for the kind comment and support!

I totally agree that younger people can learn to use tools safely and maintain them without difficulty which can help them to understand safe techniques as a pose to not using the tools at all!

  • i agree completely im 15 and have a few knives which i have learnt to sharpen from the age of 12 so they are truly razor sharp, when my friends come over who's parents are afraid of knives and wont let their kids have them i have to hide my knives or theyll cut themselves

  • my dad used to work on trawlers and used a bit of hard wood to put an edge on his fillet knife it was as sharp as a razor, you could shave with it

  • Yeah things like mdf with some stropping compound or "diamond paste" make great sharpening aids!!!

  • I can tell you understand the science behind sharpening. Great video and if you don't mind I have taken the liberty to post your video on my website. Keep up the great work!

  • Thanks man and I dont mind at all that you posted my vid on your website,I checked it out and thank you very much for your praise and support!!!

  • nice job u no ur stuff 1 thing i will point out safty tip when u were sharping it on the stick sharpener u pulled the blade to u with the sharp side at u u shold have went under the sharpener but all in all good job 4.5 star

  • no problem

  • Amazing Job!! I've been sharpening knives for a long time, and I still learn a lot. Cheers mate, Ed
