I remember seeing "West Side Story" as part of the college film series and during the opening scene with the camera flying over New York, someone in the audience droned, "koyaaaaaanisqatsiiiii". It was hilarious.
I can't thank you enough for sharing a deeply moving film that should not be forgotten. I will never forget the impression it left on me (and still does). Isn't it interesting that it hasn't seemed to age in nearly 30 years? Makes ya think,eh? Thanx, thanx and thanx again. . .-steevo
I remember when I first saw this film in my early 20's. I was already slightly familiar with Philip Glass having bought the 'North Star' album (and 'Music for 18 Musicians' by Steve Reich). Still very young, coming out of my punk rock phase and looking for something as far from the mainstream as possible. The music showed up on college stations (KALX)and public radio (KPFA - both in Berkley, CA) well before the film. When the film did show up I saw it once...twice...three times.Still my favorite
Bless this film... One day the earth will regain it's rightful rule over what we have created. This madness, this irresponsibility. It can only go so far. Be part of the change that we need. A revolution of massive proportion Love why we are here. Not what is here. Change is coming, Welcome it. Accept it. Help create a universal balance. Love is real. Love is alive. Love is mother nature. Love is now. Love all of you! :] Peace&Unity among all of us.
The first time I heard from this movie was when Frank Hoffmann announced it in this weekly "Trailer" TV-movie-broadcast in Austrian TV, when I was 16. I was so amazed, the pictures, the time-lapse-scenes and this fantastic music from Glass. Nothing changed from that day, it's so contemporary, and still a fantastic piece of work. Thanks a lot, thesumofparts !!!
Many, many thanks to you, thesumofparts, for uploading what is for me the GREATEST and MOST SIGNIFICANT motion picture of all time! While it's not for everyone, I'm very grateful to be one who "gets it" in a BIG WAY! EPIC and EXISTENTIAL!
Wow. Delighted to find this on youtube, thanks for taking the trouble.
Remember seeing with my dad years ago and was mesmorised by it.
Haven't seen your upload yet but will do soon. This film introduced me to Philip Glass and was worth it just for that.

I just read wysiwyg's comments! Oh dear, some people just don't get that 'if you don't like it don't watch it thing'. I wonder, did he get up the wrong side of bed or does his moniker point to a more permanent defect?

god awful "music"
+ anyone who thinks this doc using stock images is good obviously has not seen BBC docs like blue planet or others. those are more beautiful and awe inspiring than this rubbish!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why is this so popular? no effort went into this! all the images are stock images taken by others! its ooold, lots of cleaning up of factories, developments etc has happened since so these images are void! id be happy to be on a beech by a reactor! i went to chernobyl and am fine!
any BBC/Discovery documentary is more interesting and inspiring than this POS!
@wysiwyg2006 Clearly, you do not understand. This is not meant to tell us what happens when a lion and a beluga whale mate and have a love child. This is mean to show us that our life is completely out of balance, hence the name "Koyaanisqatsi". It's not meant to be visually stunning. These images, no matter who took them, along with the music adds up to an experience that I simply don't get when I watch Planet Earth...
Nature and evolution of our planet suicidal... Nature and evolution created man, man destroys nature, that evolution would not stop. Quite simply, we live through the cycle and go into oblivion, like everything in the universe
@Wh0rse Not as far as I know. The MGM DVD is not very good since it has a rather low bitrate (soft image) and is cropped up and down (even though that's the way it was shown in theaters). The best available version is the discontinued full frame 3:4 )=more image up and down) IRE version which is approved by director Godfrey Reggio and was available for a short time throuhg the internet. Please drop me PM if you would like a copy. And yes: I hope this will come out restored on BluRay oe day.
Thank you so much Thesumofparts for uploading this film that I had seen when I was 17, in 1984. It caused me a great emotional impact then and still today!!! This images cry out. They expose our mad greediness and blind irresponsability as humans leaving us with nowhere to hide. No need for words.
@Pelipequirroja Geez I never fell in love with someone online just from a comment she made.
Exactly right P. That it's taking us a while to destroy ourselves doesn't mean that we're not doing it; instead it's just a testament to how bountiful the world is that we're destroying.
I saw this eons ago in a philosophy class in either middle school or high school. It always stuck with me because of both imagery and music. WHen it was released on dvd, I jumped on it right quick. I'm so glad that Francis Ford Coppola picked up the rights to produce this; going from vhs to dvd. Just a crazy film and it has so many perspectives.
@pmaddamsetti mate you need to get over yourself and appreciate the movie for what it is.. it requires patience and intelligence to watch this movie !
@OMGedInStoresNearYou Heh, "good" isn't exactly the word I would use. It's pretty intense, I didn't even get through half before freaking out and walking away. I ended up watching the whole thing later. Then again, I was VERY stoned, so it's up to you.
I remember listening to a radio program, (CBC fm) when they first aired the soundtrack for this film. I was blown away. I searched every record store for the soundtrack and no one carried it until I re-discovered it, (and the film) a few years later. This tops my chart as an all-time classic favorite along with other greats. It is a "time less" work of art that can be viewed many times and never get tired of it.
It reminds me of the end of Antonioni's "Zabrinske Point" when the house blows up in slow motion to the tune of Pink Floyd. However, Philip Glass will suffice. :-)
i know, its just like this all the way through. its not a movie with characters and that. its all about interpretation, and viewpoint and all that bollocks.
A mi me fascinó éste documental. Pude verlo hace algun par de meses...sus elementos visuales y sonoros me parecieron muy originales a pesar de haber sido una producción de 1982!
