What more could you ask? Perfect French diction, clearly articulated vocal line, refined coloratura technique, and a timbre that can melt your heart. Brava, Bidu!
Bidu Sayao wanted so much to sing Puccini, but she respected her light voice and played the roles that was made for her voice. She was a very wise woman! I love her voice and, yes she was one of the best Brazillian singers and had the opportunity to sing on Met. I am very proud of her! I hope that other brazillian singers have the same opportunity that she had. We have a lot of talented singers there in Brazil.
Brava- I ladore her Juliette with Romeo-Bjoerling! She was a great, great, great artist.
she haven"t the "biggest" voice-but she knows exactly to to the BEst with it. I wish we have some singers like her today. When you her her- and than Dessay-you know waht I mean! Brava...Thank you so much for the upload
I'm used to hearing the Sills' rendition of this character, very complex, but I think Sayao has the upper hand here with the French & the innocence ? of this feminine creature -- Beautiful but I guess I prefer Sills, with her earthy quality (much bigger voice, of course)--but I'm torn. Tx, for posting!
Her performance is unique! Her existing audio recordings make me believe she's the most complete Manon ever. Coquettish, genuinely youthful, deep and intense. Her ability to sing dramatically but always with utmost good taste and respect to the French style is amazing. She studied with De Rezké and was one of the last perfect examples of French singing, with a clean, impeccable technique. Brazil must remember this woman who was its greatest singer ever!
Actually, Brazil don't have great singers anymore and people don't remember the singers of the past. Today all we hear it's funk (a stupid music style, that is worst here than anywhere else) with people pretending to sing. How could they forget Bidú Sayão and Villa-Lobos? I know it doesn't matter to you all, but I had to say it.
About the video? I can only say 5 stars and favorited!
I am Brazilian, too, but I must disagree. Brazil still has many great opera and popular singers. What happens is that they don't get the attention the media and the population gives to fake singers of trash music. We still have even classical composers who keep working despite few or no estimulation to the Arts here...
You see... I recently heard to Carmem Monarcha, I think she is the greatest soprano we have now... And I heard to Cesar Camargo, a good tenor, an now I can say that Brasil still has good "opera" singers (because Cesar Camargo isn't an opera singer). Thankyou for opening my mind!!!
A charming performance, equal to Sills', sung with beautiful tone and refined technique (as always) in perfect French and with the appropriate French style. Sayao and Pons, who greatly admired and respected one another, seldom sang each other's roles at the Met. Also worth listening to is Galli-Curci's beautiful performance of the Gavotte.

Actually, I find Sills' interpretation of this aria has more depth and color, but I do enjoy Sayao.

I know it... And that's why I'm saying that there isn't... because they do not have the attention that Bidú and Villa-Lobos had.
E se ambos somos brasileiros, porquê estamos falando inglês???
Guilherme7530 3 years ago
Actually, I don't know!

Estou dando o troco :p
Mas amo a Bidú Sayão!!!
