wait.. if the Q are omnipotent and at a snap of their fingers they can kill something.. why are the Q afraid of the Borg.. the Q could just snap their fingers and teleport all the Borg into the dimension that species 8472 exists. or they could snap their fingers and make all the Borg really small. or just kill them all off.
@TMCY87 they just make things messy. While the Q can't be harmed by the Borg themselves, a bad decision by the Q could result in the Borg spreading out and causing a lot of mayhem for other races. Although the Q could always reset things omnipotently, one member going around in blasé fashion like Junior (mucking about and not cleaning up after himself), would be annoying for all concerned.
@MrSinister1979 I don't think a Q would that willingly give themselves up to the Borg. Or if they tried, then they would be exiled from the continuum and stripped of their powers.
@MrSinister1979 Eh, if the events of Star Trek Borg show anything, the Q are essentially unassimilatable... given that Q shows up several times looking like a Borg, but still himself.
So Q doesn't want Q Junior provking the Borg? But Q is the one who brought the Borg into the alpha quadrant in the first place, so it's entirely justified to call him a hippocrite.
@TheLegolasguy Some fans have speculated that the borg already knew of humanity's existence from the events in ENT:Regeneration when the borg sent a message that will arrive at the delta quadrant in the 24th century.If the Borg already knew of humanity's existence they would have come to assimilate the federation sooner or later, in fact some fans guessed the cube Enterprise D met in J25 is probably on a course to Earth, so all Q did was let Federation face an inevitable threat sooner than later
@TheLegolasguy actually if you watch star trek enterprise relics. A assimilated federation shuttle is assimilated by the borg who are from the future but archer stops them after the shuttle send s a subspace signal to the delta quadrant and t'pol says that it would take bout 200 years to get where it was going. So in a way q can't be blamed
@TheKellster94 Well he knew that all scenarios pointed to the fact that if the Borg were not stopped in the 24th century, then they would assimilate the Galaxy by 2600...so that was his way of making that possible.
I know, but I don't think that the writers should just change the entire history of the world they created to make it more easy to write one nice episode. They don't have any respect for there own creation. And besides, transwarp isn't meant for chasing other ships, their speed would be far too high. It would be like chasing a kid on a tricycle using a formula-1 car with maximum speed.
In Enterprise, the Borg never introduce themselves as "The Borg" so there's no way Picard would have known who they were when Q threw them into the path of that first cube. Actually, did you know that cube was already on course for Earth? The entire thing is a paradox.
In Enterprise, the Borg are revived from the sphere that tried to assimilate earth in First contact. They send a message to the Borg that would take about 100 years to reach. The Borg send a cube. It starts again.
@otherjr It was said so in 'next generation' but they fucked that up by saying that a borg sphere landed on the north pole in the 21st century, after which the drone's remained deepfried for 100 years to be awoken by starfleet researchers. The borg gave Archer and his crew a hard time before being destroyed, and they had time to send a sub-space message to borg-space, which would arrive somewhere in the 24st century...
@mmajudojjr I don't know how long ago or where I heard it from, but I have been under the impression that Q threw the Enterprise in front of a cube because it was already headed toward Earth due to the Borg in Star Trek Enterprise sending a transmission. Supposedly they just didn't say in that episode but Q knew the cube was heading for Earth and so he warned Picard.
@zeph0shade But the borg have transwarp technology so it shouldn't take a cube more than a few minutes to reach earth. And besides, after all that happened in the 22nd century, Starfleet must have been prepared for an attack. However, the captain of there flagship knew nothing about the borg, so your explanation (although it does make some sense) is really inadequate.
@mmajudojjr Well what I meant was that at the time they made the episode with Q showing them the Borg, it wasn't written to show that, but that perhaps the writers decided to change the story later when it came to the Enterprise series. There were a lot of things they hadn't decided yet about the Borg at first, for starters they apparently hadn't decided to give them transwarp yet.. Remember the cube chasing the Enterprise D? It was faster but not transwarp fast..
Q has the ability to alter time. He went back to the beginning of the universe to hide from the continuum. He should have no reason to be concerned about the Borg since he can just travel back in time to prevent whatever damage they may cause.
@KingOfMadCows True, but star trek time travel is quite inconsistent and also very dangerous. Qs are omnipotent but not omniscient (I think?), they can't know which consequences each and every small action could have on the future. And to top it, sometimes every action creates a complete new timeline without changing the 'old one' and even better, sometimes the time travel is already in your own history, making it not only a necessary step but also totally useless... :x
@kamazuri But it was shown in "Death Wish" that the Q has no problem with messing with the timeline. Quinn was basically responsible for Newton's invention of calculus, Woodstock, and Riker's existence. That's three significant contributions to just one planet. Who knows how many other timelines they've meddled with? Q also said that if Quinn had not interfered, Newton would have died a drunk so they have the ability to predict or experience possible timelines.
@KingOfMadCows Yes, as I wrote, you are right, they often do meddle with time, but just because they can and do, doesn't mean they should. But oh well, I think it is pointless to discuss it further, sorry that I wrote anything to begin with. Star Treks time travel is too inconsistent and has no real theoretical basis. It is always made out different depending on the storyline of the episodes it is used in... :|
It's funny because the actor who plays Q and the actor who played Q jr are both father and son, so whenever Q jr brings a girlfriend he's gonna be like "DONT PROVOKE YOUR MOM!"
@TheHyperFlash It's not fear. The Continuum, for all lack of appearances, apparently have rules when it involves the balance of the cosmos. Provoking the borg brings the possibility that they may go on a assimilation spree that they might not otherwise have planned constituting he extinction of a species that would be technically their fault.
@zzxcvb98 Maybe they don't fear anything on a personal level. But rather the consequences on the rest of the Milky Way Galaxy a provocation would entail.
@zzxcvb98 well if the Borg were to assimilate even one member of the Q Continuum then they would be unstoppable as well as perfect. That would be interesting then again the galaxy would be f'd.
@zzxcvb98 Well in the game Star Trek:Borg Q masquerades as a borg, so that could have had some side effect youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=TTcREwF67co#t=318s
@Alexc3217 well they did spend time researching the omega particle themselves based on information that they had assimilated. what do you think they might do if they had good evidence for the existence of something like q? and even more what if they started to notice their collective being toyed with by the q? its an untouched bit of data, likely because it was from voyager, and janeway is the stalin of the delta quadrant, but in voyager the borg can even communicate through time,
@Alexc3217 so basically even a concrete idea of what q are could spontaneously make the whole universe and all alternative universes borg, or at least in the middle of a war over who is the superior power over all, which would still be pretty much spontaneous, and all ideas of logic just fall into a hole there, of course its just a giant plothole, but its also the old "i'm my own grandpa" kind of paradox, one that if it occurred most likely existence would stop existing.
Top 5 Q moments. 5 Q:What must I do to prove myself to you?! Worf:Die. 4 Q:You're the closest thing I ever had to a friend, Jean-Luc. Picard:*WTH?!* 3 Picard:I guess this is the last we see of Q. *Q appears with a mariachi band* Worf:*Oh NO!!* Q:My brothers and sisters of the Continuum have brought me back. I'M IMMORTAL AGAIN!! OMNIPOTENT AGAIN!!! 2 Q:THE BORG ARE FIRING, WE'RE GONNA DIE!! And it's your fault. 1 Q:ARGH!! I think I need to renew myself in some alternate reality.
Perhaps, but he does seem to be genuinely surprised. I'm not suggesting he is powerless, clearly he is not, rather that his powers seem to rely on him actually consciously applying them.
Other instances include "Death wish" where the renegade Q is unable to pass through a force field he had not realised was there, and "Encounter at Farpoint" where he defends himself against the crewman who points a phaser at him, suggesting he is not exactly invulnerable.
I think Q would be fairly vulnerable to assimilation should he be caught off guard. Establishing omnipotence does not equate to invulnerability. Sisko managed to floor him with one shot.
They would not be - because they only show themselves as puppet manifestation, and the nature of Q is unknown to large extent; Borg simply can't invade Q domain (Continuum) - they can only observe Qs' manifestations. As Q put it in TNG "I'm not Aldebaran serpent but you were willing to accept me as such".
The phaser thing could have just been a show of power. As someone else mentions, The Q do not show what their real form is, they only show what they want to and/or what the person can comprehend. An alien being with that kind of power is unlikely to be hurt by Phaser fire.
Death Wish was either a moment of semi-dramatic writing, or a simple slip-up on the writers. Look at Enterprise. They completely screwed up canon sometimes simply because they "forgot" how something happened.
Well, you know, if Q's son was careless enough, he might accidentally get himself assimilated, and the the Borg would have the means to invade the Q Continuum. Nobody, not even Q, wants that.
Yes, I used to watch Voyager on swedish TV here in Norway, when it was available. Later the norwegian TV showed Voyager, but only the two first seasons.
You know it's funny Q never gives a crap about anyone. For him to show that much emotion over the borg means the Q probably fear them, since they havent blinked the borg out of existence because of that fear, probably means the borg have learned to counter the Q's powers.
@NoInfringementIntent well not really, if they break off from the collective then they are no longer part of the borg collective thus making it still one vote fore the borg collective. lol.
@DbkGcw i do not thank they are afraid but it would be really boring if everyone was a borg so it is like do not hlep the borg maybe maybe not just a guess
@rgregoryoa I imagine the Q find the Borg boring... Most of us find a hive mind concept to be very unappealing and stagnant... and the Q do claim to be the moral guardians of the universe. I just don't think they want the Borg wiping everyone out yet...
It's not simple question of "more powerful" - it's "rock-paper-scisors" type. And note, that Q proved that they CAN defy Borg at will - in this episode and in "Best of Both World". They just have their version of prime directive, and they do (or don't) provoke advanced races like Borg in order to protect other, weaker ones. That's all.
they aren't. For some reason they stop short of waving their hands and making the universe as they wish. I suppose they want to see if something can evolve naturally that would be more meaningful than anything they create. So they just to subtle things here and there in history. They don't make big changes. They keep the borg around for some purpose, but don't want them swallowing the universe.
@DbkGcw The Borg and the Q are part of a cycle. Once the Q get bored enough with the lack of interesting content in the galaxy, the Borg will be needed to help process "the after-life". The Borg represent the dark, guilty pleasures of the Q. Eventually the Q have to let the Borg take over the federation just to give someone else the pleasure of being the first and only Q (so the Q continuum can restart itself from scratch, aka a single god). The intricacies of karma also factor into this.
@katsumorymoto that was deep man! :) well i just love the star trek, all of the episodes i found something different in every one of them, from wars to love stories. i rly hope that there will be more new episodes and new movies about one of the most important tv shows/movies from my childhood!
the borg cannot assimilate the Q continuum since the Q are omnipotent, or so they claim, wheras the borg are not so if the borg tried anything the contiuum could erase the borg from existance so they couldn't have attacked the contiuum in the 1st place. Christ, explaining away that sort of crap day in, day out, it's small wonder Q only started annoying humans for fun when he did.
@mattsmt20 Not really, the Q generally seem to not want to interfere with the lesser races. And one of the Q provoking the Borg into attacking another race could lead to said race being entirely assimilated/eradicated.
@Aloradelyda Okay, so he didn't actually toy with them. He gave them a mild annoyance in the form of a dancing and alphabet singing captain. . . But I still think Q was probably the reason they came up with that little rule... that lovable, selfcentered, somehwat power-hungry, omnipitent Q..... I want to love him but it is sooooooo easy to hate him at times
@FrankLeeDeRainged They don´t fear the Borg !! Since they´re omnipotent and have complete control of matter and time, but maybe it´s cause of they possibly might make Borg upset , what could theoretically lead to their (Borg) rampage of assimilations and many other unpleasant things that Q continuum might not be able to revert ... also cause their omnipotence and powers come out from the stable event horizont and timeline consistency... but as I said - it´s just hypothesis
@BasutoFurea Me personally thinks that the borg are aware of the q, the q live in a different reality then us, however the borg have had the ability to travel to different realitys etc....
@loudman12 houh.. borg are able to travel to different spaces or dimensions but there´s no evidence they are able to reach Q continuum. Since Borg lack the knowledge that female Q provided (no need to say that Borg would need a borning supernova what occurs once over 100 years ) they can´t get to Q Continuum and do any damage... Also I hardly doubt there´s even one assimilated Q !...They can freeze them anytime they want but as I said any big action against borg from Q might make Borg upset.
I agree, the Borg pose no threat to any Q in their present form. However, the Borg have demonstrated the ability and the will to seek out other advanced beings. It's not impossible to assume that other advanced entities/civilizations exist between them and the Q. In such cases, the Borg could upgrade very quickly. Not only would the Q find a Galaxy full of advanced drones utterly boring, it might find them a threat.
True, but we have no direct evidence of this. If it were so, I imagine the Borg would want to avoid a confrontation with the Q. The ultimate goal may be their assimilation, but that isn't realistic until the Borg can gain a tactical advantage. They need more time to assimilate advanced civilizations. It is likely that sooner or later they will assimilate a entity or power that will allow them to face the Q.
@FrankLeeDeRainged maybe their worried that the borg might develop a way to control "A" Q's power and stop them from using their power long enough to assimilate the Q. Could happen.
@Aloradelyda It is possible. The Q are simply a highly evolved race that has powers beyond what Federation science can explain. Personally, I think the Q are future Humans after millions of years of evolution and cross-species breeding but that's a different discussion. If the Borg have encountered and successfully assimilated something close to the Q, an Organian for example, it isn't a stretch to think that they could possibly assimilate them as well
I think personally that Q´s face was very verbose!! HAHA it´s pretty comparable to face of Seven when she told : " YOu became sexually arouden IN MY BODY! "
And if there goes about Continuum expelling Q - he may be the rebelious one, but his interferences are disposable tool to Continuum - they can blame all him (Q) for all but the results always come in handy to Continuum - since they have Q to do dirty work, they also look for ways to enable Q to come back again - as told it´s hypocrisy! ...
I don't know what difference it made to the Q Continuum if any Q provoked the Borg. It's not as if the Borg could do anything to the Qs. The Qs could simply snap their fingers & wipe the Borg out of existance in a milisecond.
@Krylov223 LOL huh?? The Q Continuum interferes with other races all the time! Look at all the crap they had put Picard & his crew through. Not to mention all the races Q tormented. & it was a Q that started the Vulcan/Romulan war. If they're not supposed to interfere with other races then they should never have put Picard & his crew on trial in TNG's Encounter At Farpoint". Doing that & then stating that they're not supposed to interfere makes them look like hypocrites.
@igykalen Q wasn't kicked out of the Continuum at the time the Continuum put Picard & co. on trial(which still makes them look like hypocrites since they're not supposed to interfere). Heck they didn't kick him out even when he WAS messing with other races. How many eons had he been doing that before the Continuum finally did kick him out.
@igykalen I know that. But that doesn't change the fact that Q had still been messing around with other races for a long time before the Continuum did anything about it.
@Lizfan2 Allow me to reiterate. Time has no meaning to the Q. What makes you think they waited for any amount of time? For all you know he was exiled before he did those events.
You're trying to follow normal physics rules of cause and effect for an impossible to understand omnipotent species....
Of course the real problem with ST is the fact that there are so many different writers. So there's no unifying source of truth for why any character or species keeps changing.
look who's talking.

The borg can be provoked?
Alexc3217 5 months ago
@Alexc3217 well they did spend time researching the omega particle themselves based on information that they had assimilated. what do you think they might do if they had good evidence for the existence of something like q? and even more what if they started to notice their collective being toyed with by the q? its an untouched bit of data, likely because it was from voyager, and janeway is the stalin of the delta quadrant, but in voyager the borg can even communicate through time,
kght222 5 months ago
@Alexc3217 so basically even a concrete idea of what q are could spontaneously make the whole universe and all alternative universes borg, or at least in the middle of a war over who is the superior power over all, which would still be pretty much spontaneous, and all ideas of logic just fall into a hole there, of course its just a giant plothole, but its also the old "i'm my own grandpa" kind of paradox, one that if it occurred most likely existence would stop existing.

xweetok100 5 months ago
Perhaps, but he does seem to be genuinely surprised. I'm not suggesting he is powerless, clearly he is not, rather that his powers seem to rely on him actually consciously applying them.
Other instances include "Death wish" where the renegade Q is unable to pass through a force field he had not realised was there, and "Encounter at Farpoint" where he defends himself against the crewman who points a phaser at him, suggesting he is not exactly invulnerable.
spot261 6 months ago
I think Q would be fairly vulnerable to assimilation should he be caught off guard. Establishing omnipotence does not equate to invulnerability. Sisko managed to floor him with one shot.
spot261 6 months ago
@spot261 I find that totally unlikely.
otherjr 6 months ago
@spot261
AnteyPL 6 months ago
@spot261 im pretty sure Q just went along with that
jvl4289 6 months ago
@spot261

Nope - they are worried not to provoke action from a Borg which would require them to intervene in order to protect less developed races.
AnteyPL 6 months ago
@AnteyPL lol I know. I was being sarcastic.
GabrielMajere 6 months ago
Well, you know, if Q's son was careless enough, he might accidentally get himself assimilated, and the the Borg would have the means to invade the Q Continuum. Nobody, not even Q, wants that.

You know it's funny Q never gives a crap about anyone. For him to show that much emotion over the borg means the Q probably fear them, since they havent blinked the borg out of existence because of that fear, probably means the borg have learned to counter the Q's powers.
Phoenixesper1 8 months ago
@Phoenixesper1
I think it's more that the Q are worried that provoking the Borg would lead them to laying waste to their galaxy.

@DbkGcw because everyone is afraid of the borg, except species 8472 of course!
rgregoryoa 11 months ago
@rgregoryoa I imagine the Q find the Borg boring... Most of us find a hive mind concept to be very unappealing and stagnant... and the Q do claim to be the moral guardians of the universe. I just don't think they want the Borg wiping everyone out yet...
ben091294 11 months ago
@DbkGcw
possibly because the borg are resistant to the Q. Remember the borg did assimilate the El aurians and Guinan alone is powerful enough to fight a Q.
Phoenixesper1 8 months ago
@Phoenixesper1
No she isn't LOL.
Q could pop her out of existence if he wanted, if the El Aurians were so powerful, how come Kirk was able to best Soran so easy in a fight?
EnforcerX71 8 months ago
@Phoenixesper1
That's all.
AnteyPL 7 months ago
@DbkGcw
they aren't. For some reason they stop short of waving their hands and making the universe as they wish. I suppose they want to see if something can evolve naturally that would be more meaningful than anything they create. So they just to subtle things here and there in history. They don't make big changes. They keep the borg around for some purpose, but don't want them swallowing the universe.
waldoman7 4 months ago
@DbkGcw The Borg and the Q are part of a cycle. Once the Q get bored enough with the lack of interesting content in the galaxy, the Borg will be needed to help process "the after-life". The Borg represent the dark, guilty pleasures of the Q. Eventually the Q have to let the Borg take over the federation just to give someone else the pleasure of being the first and only Q (so the Q continuum can restart itself from scratch, aka a single god). The intricacies of karma also factor into this.

the borg cannot assimilate the Q continuum since the Q are omnipotent, or so they claim, wheras the borg are not so if the borg tried anything the contiuum could erase the borg from existance so they couldn't have attacked the contiuum in the 1st place. Christ, explaining away that sort of crap day in, day out, it's small wonder Q only started annoying humans for fun when he did.

mattsmt20 1 year ago 2
@mattsmt20 Not really, the Q generally seem to not want to interfere with the lesser races. And one of the Q provoking the Borg into attacking another race could lead to said race being entirely assimilated/eradicated.

@BasutoFurea Me personally thinks that the borg are aware of the q, the q live in a different reality then us, however the borg have had the ability to travel to different realitys etc....
loudman12 1 year ago
@loudman12 houh.. borg are able to travel to different spaces or dimensions but there´s no evidence they are able to reach Q continuum. Since Borg lack the knowledge that female Q provided (no need to say that Borg would need a borning supernova what occurs once over 100 years ) they can´t get to Q Continuum and do any damage... Also I hardly doubt there´s even one assimilated Q !...They can freeze them anytime they want but as I said any big action against borg from Q might make Borg upset.

@BasutoFurea

@loudman12

Aloradelyda 1 year ago
@Aloradelyda It is possible. The Q are simply a highly evolved race that has powers beyond what Federation science can explain. Personally, I think the Q are future Humans after millions of years of evolution and cross-species breeding but that's a different discussion. If the Borg have encountered and successfully assimilated something close to the Q, an Organian for example, it isn't a stretch to think that they could possibly assimilate them as well
Fbueller129 1 year ago
@Fbueller129 And do you think we REALLY want a race of time traveling omnipotent Borg porting around the galaxy?

Best delivery ever.

I think personally that Q´s face was very verbose!! HAHA it´s pretty comparable to face of Seven when she told : " YOu became sexually arouden IN MY BODY! "
And if there goes about Continuum expelling Q - he may be the rebelious one, but his interferences are disposable tool to Continuum - they can blame all him (Q) for all but the results always come in handy to Continuum - since they have Q to do dirty work, they also look for ways to enable Q to come back again - as told it´s hypocrisy! ...

Come on, Q, this is Voyager. My neighbor's cat could kick the Borg's asses in this series.

Imagine q meeting the clow that one time who was the avatar of fear

funny how Q was a wild card in TNG but in voyager he was mere comic releif.

LOL his face is hilarious

I don't know what difference it made to the Q Continuum if any Q provoked the Borg. It's not as if the Borg could do anything to the Qs. The Qs could simply snap their fingers & wipe the Borg out of existance in a milisecond.
Lizfan2 1 year ago
True, but the Continuum isn't supposed to interfere with other races. Provoking the borg would just make other races suffer.
Krylov223 1 year ago
@Krylov223 LOL huh?? The Q Continuum interferes with other races all the time! Look at all the crap they had put Picard & his crew through. Not to mention all the races Q tormented. & it was a Q that started the Vulcan/Romulan war. If they're not supposed to interfere with other races then they should never have put Picard & his crew on trial in TNG's Encounter At Farpoint". Doing that & then stating that they're not supposed to interfere makes them look like hypocrites.
Lizfan2 1 year ago
@Lizfan2 Maybe Q is like that because the continuum kicked him out for messing with other races and the continuum put him in charge of his son.
igykalen 1 year ago
@igykalen Q wasn't kicked out of the Continuum at the time the Continuum put Picard & co. on trial(which still makes them look like hypocrites since they're not supposed to interfere). Heck they didn't kick him out even when he WAS messing with other races. How many eons had he been doing that before the Continuum finally did kick him out.
Lizfan2 1 year ago
@Lizfan2 Time doesn't mean anything to the Q
igykalen 1 year ago
@igykalen I know that. But that doesn't change the fact that Q had still been messing around with other races for a long time before the Continuum did anything about it.
Lizfan2 1 year ago
@Lizfan2 Allow me to reiterate. Time has no meaning to the Q. What makes you think they waited for any amount of time? For all you know he was exiled before he did those events.
You're trying to follow normal physics rules of cause and effect for an impossible to understand omnipotent species....
Of course the real problem with ST is the fact that there are so many different writers. So there's no unifying source of truth for why any character or species keeps changing.
