Exactly. I was really mystified about the review after seeing the first episode.

I wonder if it has ever been really confirmed that Mai Yamane is singing this in zentran. IIRC Yoko Kanno was interviewed some time ago and someone in the audience asked her that, but she didn't really give a definite answer on that

I had only read one review of this series on a magazine and they gave it a lot of flak (back then internet was still in its infancy) .. Saw the advert on some tape and this song played. I decided to order the tape despite the review solely because this music was so fantastic... It quickly became my all time favorite anime and this song one of my all time favorite songs. Truly magnificent piece. Both the series and the soundtrack and especially this song.

@C22Acolyte Shinichiro Watanabe helped create Macross Plus, also the movie version. Same guy who created Cowboy Bepop and Samurai Champloo (those two are probably his most noted animes, especially Bepop). You should check both of, the animes are have amazing soundtracks which completely suit each anime - Jazz for Bepop and Hip Hop (produced by Nujabes RIP).
