I think that the reason why alarm clocks are so annoying is so that you actually wake up. I've had times where I actually turned off my alarm clock in my sleep because I was so used to it.
After watching this video, I'm tempted to try to make a video of my owl/dove call. If you roll your tounge, and then picture what it would sound like in the back of your throat, thats what I can do. No, i can't really say how, I just can
This might be because it's 11 at night, but I have tears streaming down my face right now from laughing so hard. I've seen this video at least 3 times before and I don't really have a track record of laughing hysterically at online videos. But... cookie.
Does anybody else have this ad on the side that says "I love you, vlogbrothers"? And it has a picture of a dude with a stache? And when you click on it, it leads to a guy's channel. His channel name is whatswhat.
You know whats fun, my alarm clock for years did three beeps in a row, so now whenever I hear three beeps in a row, I feel like I'm starting to wake up. That gets really annoying.
Also, it's going to take more than an eyesite camera to make Hank Normal
Also, the reason that alarm clocks go EEEEEE-EEEEEEE-EEEEEE-EEEEEE is because there are people like me who even with the EEEEE-EEEEEE-EEEEE alarm clocks still won't wake up without replacing the speakers with bigger more powerful ones
You input when you need to wake up and it tells you when you should try to go to sleep, or you can tell it when you're going to bed and it will tell you when to set your alarm clock for. It's pretty nifty :)
An alarm clock like that exists, and you're right, it's like a wrist watch! It wakes you up near the time you specify, when it detects that you've recently moved. Because you don't move during deep sleep, it'll wake you when waking is easy and comfortable. I haven't watched the videos after this yet, but I hope you've discovered this alarm clock already. If not, I hope you see this comment.
Funny thing about alarm clocks. This morning I hated my alarm sound so much that I got out my phone and blasted Accio Deathly Hallows so that I would actually want to wake up. So YOU, Hank Green, are responsible for me getting to work on time.
French the Llama! I just choked on some salted peanuts, because I was laughing so hard at your pleading with your iSight camera to stop changing colours. Sorry if I'm not making sense I think I might suffer from serious hypoxia right now and English is not my first language.
Now back to rewatch the video to see what I missed out on while nearly choking to death - cheers!
"i wanted to throw that microwave oven... out of the window of the hotel room." is something i think about when i get really angry. and then it makes me laugh and feel better.
I'm not sure if scientists have figured out REM cycles. And even if they have, each persons would be different, as you indirectly explained. And since computers can pick up on whether we're having a nightmare or not it might be possible.
@MegaMuffinNinja I kind of know how this works; we randomly covered it in a psychology class I took in high school. As you seem to know, it's best to wake up during REM. A full sleep cycle (which ends in REM) lasts about 90 minutes and then repeats continually. The average person will wake up during REM if they get exactly 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep.
The real problem is that your alarm clock would have to start timing not when you get into bed but when you actually fall asleep.
I don't use an alarm clock. If I set one, I will inevitably wake up hours beforehand in a blind panic, thinking that I've slept through it. Besides, I don't need an alarm clock. Not once in my life have I slept past 9:10am. My internal alarm clock is actually incredibly adept at, you know, working.
there is an alarm clock that measures your sleep patterns and wakes you up in the right moment at about the time you wanted up for forgot its name though. Google it.
I want an alarm clock that wakes me up right at the end of a REM cycle, so I'll be able to have a full-length dream but still remember it when I'm up. THEN I can record it in my dream journal, which increases my chances of lucid dreaming in the future!
Annoying alarm clock noises are so because it reinforces your need to wake up in the morning because you want to end that noise, I guess. Or it is a scam by leading alarm clock corporations to have their customers smash their clocks at a steady rate to buy new ones.
I came up with that idea too! Like an eyemask that detects rapid eye movement (REM) and will wake you up precisely when you have gotten the most from your sleep! It needs to happen!
oh my god. this is probably the second funniest vlogbrothers video. ever. "i wanted to throw that microwave out of the window of the hotel room." *dramatic turn* and "whyeee would i want to wake up to that???"
There is a reason why alarm clocks have to make loud and obtrusive noises, if they made peaceful, pleasant noises you would just go back to sleep when you heard them.
I have an alarm clock that plays bird calls, and whenever I hear a bird that sounds like the one that wakes me up, I sort of panic because I think I need to get out of bed, even if it's the middle of the day and I'm wide awake...
I don't like the noise my alarm clock makes either which is why I set my phone to go off and I get to listen to music when I wake up! Much better than the annoying beeping sound.
Hank i just bought an app for my iphone, just .99 cents!, that lets you set an alarm to wake you up in the sleep cycle that makes you feel most refreshed. Its sooo cool! you put it on your bed and it senses movement to determine what cycle you're in. buy it! its ahmazing :O
@TheAvWizard That's sort of creepy...but mostly just incredible! Have you noticed a difference (in how you feel when you wake up) since you got that app?
My clock gives me 3 choices to wake up to. Bells like the old fashion clocks, chimes as in wind chimes, or cathedral bells. Alot better choices than the electronic beeping sound...yuck.
Some of the very first consumer-grade digital alarm clocks (circa 1975) did make soft cooing or chirping noises, but you can guess what probably happened -- enough heavy sleepers (or hangover victims) missed their morning trains & blamed the clocks. So now all we've got are the meep-meeps. The few current alternatives (like a supposed "wind chime" alarm clock that actually sounds like a tiny dying robot) are crap.
Are there not calm alarm clocks? I thought I had heard of them. I can't use them myself because I'll sleep right through them, or roll back over and fall asleep once I hit snooze.
I need a jarring noise to awaken me. It is my nature.
oh dear. I have one of those horrid alarm clocks, and if, in my groggy state, i hit the snooze instead of the power when i get up, I can hear it go off 9 minutes later. One story up. On the OPPOSITE END OF MY HOUSE. IN THE SHOWER. Sob. Sob.
You were in Montana? Sweet! I am in Montana, so that is awesome, even though I don't live in Missoula, but if anything actually happens in Montana, that is awesome.
u r sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
the problem with that hank is any noise that wakes you up is automatically going to annoy the hell out of you after a few days. I had one that made a cock-a-doodle-doo noise, cause at the time I wanted to be a farmer, one week after mum bought me it she had to buy another one because somehow it managed to get hevily stamped on when I was waking up, when that didnt shut it up it got the front taken off and all of the wires were cut into tiny pieces. as you can guess I had to pay for the new one.
i heard about an alarm clock like that! a giant gizmo you get hooked up to that wakes you up in stages using sound and temperature and things based on where you are in your REM sleep
they DO have bio-watches that supposedly measure heart rate, temp, etc to tell when you're at a prime time to wake up you give it a 30 min range in which you can be woken up, and it'll hit you at the best time. check it out.
They had this sweet gizmo that was like those eye cover things that you wear when your sleeping that would wake you up just a litttle bit every night so you would remember your dreams better, but it didn`t work as good as the wanted.
After a crappy night of dealing with flaky people who are supposed to be running things, my computer decided to switch to Simplified Chinese. So I spent half an hour trying to figure out how to change it back so that I could read/type. I couldn't figure it out. So I had to restart my computer.
1:18 -1:23 Funny movements :) Otherwise.. Please add captions to all the videos including this so the deaf can be involved and watch more of your stuff :)
I actually was reading a Manga the other day and in the little side column the author writes in, the mangaka was talking about weird gifts she'd gotten. And one of the was exactly what hank just said! She got a watch that detecs when your sleep is light and it has an alarm go off at that time.
I've had that exact same thought! Well, not the wristwatch/brain clampy thing, more like i google average lengths of sleep cycles and try to plan sleeping x amount of hours.
But still!
You're so awesome. and way to go for never forgetting. :)
We were up at my in-laws cabins and at about 6:00 AM I woke up to this noise that sounded like water running. And as I'm slowly opening my eyes I'm starting to hear sea gulls. The alarm clock beside me wakes you to an option of sounds. Trust me waking up to the ocean and sea gulls is just as annoying as waking up to the beeping clocks.
Well 2 things. 1. Alarm clocks are annoying because annoying will wake ALLMOST anyone up. 2. Cell Phones can sound however you want them to. I wake up to "Sweeney Todd" music every morning but of course if I hear any sound every morning eventually I get use to it and can't hear it at all in which case I change the alarm tone. At this point the standard alarm clock noise will never wake me up ever again because it's a standard alarm clock noise.
Do you reeeeaaaallly want to add MORE technology to your life?hmmmm? What if it screws up,and messes whih your head while your dreaming, and tells you stuff like go start fights at biker bars,,,ya know?
I heard on the radio about 5 years ago that scientists were developing an alarm clock that would wake you up in the REM sleep cycle.....it never happened
They have a type of clock thing that will wake you up when you start coming out of the REM sleep....but that's the closest to your brain crack idea that's been invented thus far. XD
Tip: use your cellphone as an alarmclock, 'cuz if you got a decent one that plays mp3's you can put your own sound on it to wich you want to wake up to, I even heard that sony eriksson has one with an alarmclock that if you wave your hand over it , it goes to "snooze" ....
on pcworld theres an article thats not too old and its like top gadgets for college or something, and it has an alarm clock that determines your perfect sleep cycle
Respironics "SleepWare" sleep monitor... you could maybe program it to do that.. it monitors biosigns during sleep. Or, you could use one of the OpenEEGs (but kinda dangerous)
I'm sorry Hank, but I'm happy you lost your footage because this is one of the funniest videos you've made!!! LOL!!! Some of those faces are absolutely brilliant!!! Priceless!!!
My alarm clock is a Dalek. Trust me, that is unpleasant to wake up to.

You know what Hank? I have my old alarm that wakes you up to the sound of running water, a rooster, a seagull, or a forest. Do you want it?

3:14 O MY GOD. You have no IDEA how many times i watched that part.

I know how you feel, Hank.
(This just happened.)
After a crappy night of dealing with flaky people who are supposed to be running things, my computer decided to switch to Simplified Chinese. So I spent half an hour trying to figure out how to change it back so that I could read/type. I couldn't figure it out. So I had to restart my computer.
BLEGGG.
On another note, I love analog alarm clocks.

The Zeo is part way there, it just doesn't have the alarm. You think a $400 device would have that.

there is something like that... it works with your eyesight camera to track your movements to see what state of sleep you're in.

I don't know anybody who is such a light sleeper that cooing pigeons would wake them up.
EuphonyInASense 2 years ago
I don't know about pigeons, but you can get an alarm clock that wakes you up with the lovely voice of Stephen Fry.

I actually was reading a Manga the other day and in the little side column the author writes in, the mangaka was talking about weird gifts she'd gotten. And one of the was exactly what hank just said! She got a watch that detecs when your sleep is light and it has an alarm go off at that time.
OtakuSapien 2 years ago
I just love messages from the mangaka, they are always so interesting. ^.^ One of my favorite parts of reading manga.
OctobersRequiem 2 years ago
Mine too ^-^! but it's just amazimg to me that it's the EXACT thing he was just talking about! ^_^!!!!!!!!

That sleep thing is SUCH a good idea!!!

I had an alarm clock that made one of three noises:
1. cooing pigeons
2. seagulls
3. the ocean
It was quite nice until it broke. :(
ruthidium 2 years ago
Well 2 things. 1. Alarm clocks are annoying because annoying will wake ALLMOST anyone up. 2. Cell Phones can sound however you want them to. I wake up to "Sweeney Todd" music every morning but of course if I hear any sound every morning eventually I get use to it and can't hear it at all in which case I change the alarm tone. At this point the standard alarm clock noise will never wake me up ever again because it's a standard alarm clock noise.

Someone who I know has got a ringtone on his phone, and he has that as his alarm, and it's a really nice sound - it's like bird-song
RFDC07 2 years ago
They have a type of clock thing that will wake you up when you start coming out of the REM sleep....but that's the closest to your brain crack idea that's been invented thus far. XD
StickmanQueen 2 years ago
Tip: use your cellphone as an alarmclock, 'cuz if you got a decent one that plays mp3's you can put your own sound on it to wich you want to wake up to, I even heard that sony eriksson has one with an alarmclock that if you wave your hand over it , it goes to "snooze" ....
maddogmaddox 2 years ago
on pcworld theres an article thats not too old and its like top gadgets for college or something, and it has an alarm clock that determines your perfect sleep cycle

Respironics "SleepWare" sleep monitor... you could maybe program it to do that.. it monitors biosigns during sleep. Or, you could use one of the OpenEEGs (but kinda dangerous)
