The Velvet Underground is all about the gays in SF way back when and their new daring lifestyle of soon to be publicly accepted sexual deviance. I rebuke this because it is an abomination and the insult is to overlay it upon corny but wholesome Lawrence Welk. I don't need reeductation to know that homosexual behavior is unnatural and basically sick. But if buggering your buddy gets you through the day, so be it. Just don't go looking for blessings from the straight community. Just sayin'
@alto100 - I could care less about your blessings or your curses. I didn't care about blessings or curses before I knew I was queer - I don't know why I would after. And that includes, I might add, the blessings or curses of the gay community, if such a thing actually existed, which it doesn't, partially sad to say...

Wow how fucking clever... dubbing faggot music over Lawrence Welk... wow you are such a genius... maybe I should think about sucking my male neighbors dick now that I've hear this... where would entertainment be today without dick sucking fags with Lawrence Welk on video and Lou Reed doing vocals... wow it's such a rush to be hip and sucking dick... you guys rock like Satan in a hellhole...
@alto100 Wow....you really must have some personal issues my friend...I hope you work those out. You seem obsessed with graphic homosexual imagery as an insult. I'm strait and secure in that fact...So its hard for me to grasp homosexuality as an insult, but my experience is that people who think in this fashion do so because they themselves have deep seated sexual identification issues...they hate their own sexual feelings & project it outward as a defense. Your prejudices define you. Get help
At about the 2:08 mark and on it gets downright eerie-real as the camera pans out and all the musicians in the frame actually look like they're really Playing Lou Reed. Hilarious
This is very unusual of Lawrence Welks to perform this song? Mostly easy listening, show tunes and big band, along with polka music. I would like to know the electronic keyboard being played besides the piano?
@patsaxon well it's not the real vid but the keyboard in the video looks to be a Vox Continental and the one in the song is some sort of heavily distorted electric organ, maybe a Vox (they were pretty popular back then).
In 100 years they'll look back and call the period from 1960 to 1980 the greatest period in electrified band music. It will all be regarded as great. They will play Lawrence Welk, Pink Floyd, The Stones, Beatles, Velvet Underground, The Doors ( ah' The Doors!!!), Both Jimmy Smiths- the one in the U.S. who's black and the one in the U.K. who is white...who incidentally both rip on the organ.
There is no list big enough to contain all of the best music in this period. As you get older U love more!

@paulj0557 Lawrence Welk will not be included on the list. This is a joke video in case you haven't noticed. Welk did have two singers perform "One Toke Over the Line" for real but only because he had no idea what the lyrics meant. He apparently thought it was gospel because Jesus was mentioned in the chorus.
@metamorphosis67 Why wouldn't I notice? Why wouldn't Lawrence Welk's abilities be recognized? Sure some of the stuff got cheesy in the color days, but he had amazing arranging abilities and his musicians not only could play their instruments well, but they were all very creative. I guess I'm just fortunate enough to love music enough to play guitar for 20 years and then pick up the electronic organ and actually give music that I used to make fun of as a teen a second chance. Watch my playlists.
Oh, ist dieses so wundervoll! GesamtHeimat! Ich diente mit Lawrence Welk im Waffen SS auf der östlichen Frontseite, in Einsatzgrupen XI, bevor er zu Strasburg, North Dakota am Ende von WWII - eine erstaunliche Nazi des alten Skool floh!

When I watch this today, with the way different styles come at us on advertisements, film, etc, this doesn't sound so entirely wrong. The Velvets really were the future, and here we are in it. If they'd done Sunday Morning (and made it danceable), Welk might have invited them back.
The Velvets recorded their "loud" album White Light/White Heat right after they got a bunch of VOX amps and stuff. Funny to think that these guys might have played some of the same equipment.
Didn't Welk explode his accordion toward the end of this performance with technical assistance from Keith Moon and the Smothers Bros. sloppy stagehands? Why was this edited out?
You posted this on March, 30th? Only two days short of April 1st LOL. Great job of editing. Nevertheless, my beloved grandparents got far too much joy from Lawrence Welk to ever be anti Welk. Still, I can't stop laughing with this!
OK OK I get it. It's March 26th as I view this. Only a few more days until April 1st. My grand parents loved Lawrence Welk. I know they were the counter to the counter culture but his musicians sure could play their instruments and his vocalists knew how to sing.
its saturday morning 9.20 am uk time, ive jus woke up to my next door neighbour being raided (busted) for selling weed,!!!! the police have gone now they found nothing!!! again haha, ive just got through me 1st half joint of the day so i chose to watch this vid as it always cheers me up....every time without fail...its the bit where the old folks are all danceing away on a buzzzzz!!!

Too funny. I didn't hear that banjo player in the mix though. The real seal of approval for the Velvet Underground was at :40 where you see Lawrence's audience gets out on the dance floor.
Of course, this was the week before the MC5's legendary performance on the show, during which Lawrence Welk called for the violent overthrow of the US government.
@JakeLex None of anyone on the Lawrence Welk believed in violence. And they all believed in preserving American Democracy and freedom and most of them were members of the Ku Klux Klan.
@JakeLex And let's not for a moment forget the Lawrence Welk 20th anniversary special on TV where Black Flag was going to play...and then the show got canceled before they took the stage ;)
yer know when things in life just aint going right? and yer end up spending yer last money on weed? then yer find yerself listening to this to takeaway those thursday blues }{
This goes to show that all that talk about the so-called "Generation Gap" back then was completely groundless. Look how happy all those folks are as they dance along to this tune! Everyone, young and old, found common ground in the enjoyment of good music. And Mr. Welk certainly recognized that.

This goes to show that all that talk about the so-called "Generation Gap" back then was completely groundless. Look how happy all those folks are as they dance along to this tune! Everyone, young and old, found common ground in the enjoyment of good music. And Mr. Welk certainly recognized that.
