I have a Crosley record player that uses a belt, and it doesn't spin freely like yours does in the video. I've been turning the player on to clean the records, but when I apply even a little pressure to the surface with the discwasher, it slows the spinning down. Is this bad for the belt?
I was really worried it was going to mess up my belt so I've been using my discwasher on a flat surface to clean my vinyls. Is this a legitimate concern?
unfortunately new D4 discwasher brushes are not worth to buy. You're lucky if you have those old ones. The new ones do not have that special fabric with directional edge . That directional stuff was the main thing for brush to work. Do not buy new ones!
I can never understand people using carbon fiber brushes. It is a MUCH harder material than the record. I would never use one. I use the DW, but with distilled water rather than the D-4. Great demo!

@clos039 brush backwards right after cleaning the record and the dust will come off. If the dust stays on it yu have placed too much moisture on the discwasher brush. If you really have to clean it, use distilled water and don't use it again until it is completely dry.
I set he speed to 45RPM for quicker cleaning when I clean newly acquired lps. On subsequent cleanings i leave it on 33 RPM and clean them dry. When they are really dirty with grease, grime or gunge, I opt for cleaning on a flat surface (table) and employ a solution made up of of 2 litres distilled water, 1 liter industrial alcohol with no additives, half a litre of isopropyl alcohol and 20-30 drops of liquid detergent. I use a soft cloth.
Excellent demonstration Bill, and the correct method for cleaning LP's. You mentioned an important point but I feel needs more emphasis, this system is NOT a wet cleam.. This system is DAMP cleaning., and critical to follow the procedure that you have shown us. The grooves should never get wet. The idea is to use very little fluid on the edge of the brush, just enough to make the dust stick. Thanks for posting !!
@bman10030 the dust/grime is still damp on the edge of the of the discwasher brush, wiping on your jeans works, but you'll run out of clean material to wipe on (or change your jeans LOL) , and it's not 100% efficient, cause the brush is still damp. Try using a vacuum cleaner upholstery attachment which will help evaporate the residual fluid, and suck all the dust off.
Man. I want that original copy. I have 2 weird ones... one is a promo (half the album) and one is a dirty junky copy. Love XTC.
Just got the Discwasher. Thanks for the tutorial! I've been having some success using a microfiber cloth afterward as well. Or even with just microfiber the D4 solution.
Thanks for the informative post!
PS (Both Dukes records re-released on vinyl next month! Weee!)
Bill, you're the man. I was shopping for a discwasher on Amazon, and you convinced me to find an old TRUE Discwasher in good condition instead of buying the new imposter. Now that it's here, I know how to use it, thanks to your vid. When are you coming out with some new podcasts?
Turntable is a Stanton T.80 and the cartridge is an A-T from a few years ago... I'm not going to rip out the cartridge shell to get the model number, sorry.
thanks! the included instructions don't really show you how do use it

If you clean the records before every play then, how do you clean the discwasher for maximum efficiency?

@dverada I used to have one of these. IIRC, it came with a little brush for brushing the dirt off the discwasher pad.

Can you turn it manually on a Thorens belt drive?

How do you clean the brush after it's dusty?
bman10030 2 years ago
@bman10030 I was taught to wipe it in reverse motion on my (clean) jeans! No bull - it works!

Would you suggest the RCA Discwasher or the Stanton CFB1 Carbon Fiber Brush?
