Funniest movie ever made, the flying was done by the great Frank Talman, After the flight through the billboard, Frank landed the aircraft an it was tagged unflyable due to the damage. Great movie, great flying, great airplane!
They're taking off from Rancho Conejo Airport, Thousand Oaks, CA . The airport no longer exists. There are now single family residences in that location.
Do you think they could ever assemble such a cast of comedians and star power for a movie today, such as they did for this movie?....I DON'T THINK SO!
His natural born flying, looks like my flying when I was first learning how to do straight and level flight. LOL... An old time flyer pre FAR 91.17, guess he neglected to read the FAA Advisory Circular or didn't care.
One of the true classics to be sure!! All great actors. Never a dull moment either. Made almost 50 years ago! They sure can't do it like they used to!!
Hilarious scenes! Even more so when you look closely and notice, as Tyler begins asking for a drink, he's still in the takeoff climb! Those edge details are not visible in TV prints nor on the widescreen DVD version. By the way, the 'Rancho Conejo Airport' here was a real one by that name, located in Newbury Park Calif., and that's where those scenes were filmed of the plane buzzing the tower.
It was a Twin Beechcraft, AND the tail section of a Locheed Electra, which looked almost exactly alike, to get around the copyright laws. My best friends father worked on the plane for the film.
It was a Beechcraft Model 18 that was used in the movie. The scenes of it flying through the coca cola billboard and through the open hangar were real, not models. A gentleman named Frank Tallman did all of the flying in the film. The studio erected a billboard off the end of the runway at Chino, Ca. for the shot so after he smashed through it and was out of the camera frame he would be over the runway and able to land immediately.
The facia of the billboard was made of balsa wood, because its thin, brittle and would cause the least damage to the airplane. The advertising logo was painted on the balsa wood at the last minute. However due to a delay on the set the paint was able to dry prior to the stunt (not the plan) and it resulted in the balsa wood being considerably more resilient than expected doing a fair amount of damage to the airplane. Theres some movie trivia for ya, if only I could remeber useful things.
"...the way dear old DAD used to!" A simple, but classic line I've repeated nearly every time I've done something, well, the way dear old DAD used to!
OMG, Jim Backus was a great actor. Yeah, we'll remember him as Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island, but this brief shot was so bloody funny and he had a great dramatic turn in "Rebel Without a Cause" with James Dean. Here, of course, he's an absolute riot. Thanks for posting!!!
My dad just cracks up at 1:51 when he hits his head.

The best version is the double VHS released in 1992...has all the outtakes and lost footage. It needs to remastered and put on DVD.
And if I ever take up flying, I want him as my instructor! HAHA!!
