I always wondered why JD used a Jacksons song when Shalamar had their own records out at the time. It's not a bad thing but I just figured he would of promoted his own records. Either way, it is really cool.
The song is called, "Lovely One" from the "Triump" album in 1980. It's one of my all-time favorites. They were calling themselves The Jacksons then. It's slick, isn't it? :D
Of course this can be disputed!! His whole act? Surely you jest! Let's give credit where credit is due but I think you've crossed the line here. Michael is a phenomenal dancer, singer & composer. Jeffrey taught Mike some of the moves like the backslide and such, but the leg twitching, crotch grabbing and spinning is Mikes. And any one who dances or is an artist period will point to teacher or an influence that proceeds him/her.
Further pitting dancer against dancer (mike is better than jeffrey, etc.) is missing the point of artistic expression. Mike is not a better dancer than Jeffrey. Mike EXPRESSES the dance differently. Capisce?
According to Sugar Pop of the EBs MJ was at a session with them and saw Poppin' Pete playin around (like he always does) doing kicks and puncing his homies and he did the kick that mike is famous for. MJ saw it and incorporated it into his dancing. (this video is on youtube)
The problem here is that MJ has not given MUCH credit to where it is due. He called his dance instructors and inspirations "Kids from the ghetto"
Suga Pop is pretty inaccurate with his story. Michael was using moves like the kicks and stuff before he met them. He learned the moonwalk and popping and boogaloo from Geron Candidate, Jeffery Daniels, Cooley Jackson, and Boogaloo Shrimp
Hello concerned dance enthusiast, this is Jeffey Daniel. First of all I appreciate all of your comments, please keep it peaceful and friendly. For the record, I love Michael Jackson to death and he is a great entertainer and one of my dance brothers such as the electric boogaloos, twilight players, Tyrone Proctor the pioneer of wacking and Casper.
I do agree with you that I wish I knew more about jeffrey daniels or about choreographers in general. I hear what you are saying man. But then when you look at it most choreographers for entertainers arent mentioned. who knows maybe mike thanked him when he got awards?? - we just didnt know his name so it meant nothing?? A lot of what jeffrey daniels showed micheael was gliding moves but even jeffrey daniels didnt create those himself.
Also it must be remembered that MJ was one of those kids who took a liking to the new style of dancing including popping and locking. He was always on soul train and just like JD he didnt create the moonwalk, but he made some other moves that were original like his kicks, spinning multiple times in that direction etc. etc. MJ is a child of the 60's and 70's, who both learned moves from his peers like JD and Boogaloo Sam, and other lockers, but he also created his own style and his own moves.
I always thought James Brown started the multiple spinning! Rememeber that Michael Jackson was the pioneer of breakdancing (the robot in 1973 on Soul Train), but Jeffrey Daniels helped him enhance other popping moves. Besides the robot, Micahel never demostrated popping moves til the Triumph tour in 1981 (see his performance of Shake Your Body)
Hey man, the video is sick no doubt and jeffrey daniels is a true genius. I can tell though that you don't give much props to MJ. Since that robot was done on tv in 72 73 I think he might very well have been the creator or involved in the creation of it . I am not sure though
Do you mean that ST clip (I think it was in 1990), when he came back to the states to record an lp and he promoted it on the show? That was no jherri curl. he just had his hair straighten and BTW, I think the video was removed and user was suspended. Michael might have paid Jeffrey the favor by letting him use "Lovely One" on the ST dance performance in 1980 (one with the dog and the boxed subway )
Micahel never copied off of Jeffrey's hair dos (Jeffrey never had a jherri curl, he had a big fro and in 1982 some straight punk like stuff). Costumes, Michael defintely copied some of the stuff like navy jackets, sailor suits, uncle sam atires, but might I add that MJ started the one white glove, thank you!
Michael's been dancing like he does since the early mid 70's man. His style is his own, Michael Peters gave him structure and technical knowledge but he didn't copy everything off Jeffrey he jus stole a couple moves like all the greats do. People forget Michael was the one to realy show the world dance and robot in the early 70's with Dancing Machine, thats what people were influenced by.
man the summer of 1982 ticking was really popular..ticking and waves in combo..it was the most awesome display of moves I ever seen.. at the workshop on 92nd and Western in Los Angeles it was great..slow ticking and waving then weeks later the move was to go extremely uptempo...boy you had to stay up on all the latest moves.. I loved the tidal wave..
Marvin Joined after the dancing went dead. He was in College while dancing...great guy.. as all of them are.. I see robot dane all the time now..me and him had kids attend the same school,, so everyday for 5 years we just stood around and talked..
this guy is great,(Boogaloo Storm from The Fantastic Poppers) world class.. yes he has incorporated twist-o-flex quite nicely in his great solo spot...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF23EJurNpU
this guy is great, world class.. yes he has incorporated twist-o-flex quite nicely in his great solo spot...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF23EJurNpU
all of them have a lil twist o flex..it was a move I loved ,, but I never really incoporated that move..but if you look at poppin pete video links he and skeeter rabbit do a lot of twist-o-flexing.. I love that move...that move has been around since the beginning
I hung out with Poppin Pete and Sam and them.. Marvin Puppet Boozer was my best friend...we all went to the same high school... Sam was older... but we all went to LB millikan on the eastside...
one summer day at the Hutch, one of The Electronic boogaloo lockers (not sam or Pete) was at the hutch,, this was in 1977,, he was doing some kind of Robot move but it was not really roboting, and he got turned out, everyone laughed at him, and we thought his style of roboting was retarded...he got ate up by Scalley, king of The hutch, and Marvin Boozer and the other 30 lockers at the time..(and roboters) But I saw something that night, I didn't laugh as hard
we had a guy hang out with us Named George Brown...he was in the mysterious Poppers....George was a great roboter.. but one night we all went to the workshop on 92nd and western and George had his hands full in the dark room in the back, where some of the baddest robotors hung out..this was in 1978....the workshop was the spot..also Mark Benson was King Tutt.. he was the inventor of the King Tut style...
this must be the group from fresno, before they came to Long Beach.. Pete and they came to Long Beach and those guys never got credit for those moves. Boogaloo Sam and Pete was the one who went to the funk festival and showed Los Angeles and the world this Electric Boogaloo.... so Sam and Pete Solomon get the credit.. with all due respect to the fresno fellas.... Boogaloo became famous in Long Beach...not fresno.....altough it started in Fresno..Long Beach was the spot
I think so too, especially after seeing his early stuff when he did "Dancing Machine" and he did all of the poplockers moves--better than them!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj4ksowFYKc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqy87GeaZU8
OOOH, did Michael steal some of these moves for his "Smooth Criminal" act? I Think so...however, I think he and Jeffrey were friends and Jeffrey was probably flattered. Afterall, dance is too be done by all. Just give kudos to the originator--whoever that might be. I don't think Jackson claimed to have invented these dances anyway! BTW, I am getting a crush on Daniels after all these years :)
Michael did invent the robot, but that was about it. Micahel never claimed bout inventing all those other dance moves, and Soul Train was the first time Michael demostrated his mark on being a terrific dancer.
Yo...all I know is, that was one of the tightest Moonwalks I have ever seen...the dog on a leash was sick...Jeffery Daniels gets major stripes on that one!!!!
