that was truly a damn shame. that was a very special st. joe's team, one that will never be recreated. it was an utterly forgettable oklahoma st. team. this is one of those moments in sports when you sit there for hours after wondering how destiny can be so cruel.
give me a break...your coach continuously dogged our team and look what happened.
Forgettable team? is their 31-4 record w/ regular season and big 12 tournament championships forgettable? How about 4 or 5 of the guys on the team play or at one time played in the NBA; or the fact that osu won by an average margin of victory over 35 games of 15 pts/game.
Plain and simple: St Joes got all the talk b/c of East coast bias. OSU was anything but forgettable. Obviously you haven't forgotten them.
I live in California. I liked St. Joe's for the same reason they got "all the talk." Because they were a small school with all the components coming together for a magical year. It was a fun story and they were undefeated most of the year. East coast bias? What nonsense. I say forgettable Ok St. team because they have had many similarly good teams. There was nothing special about it for the average unbiased fan to get excited about.
i understand where youre coming from & i, too, was cheering for st joes early on and throughout the season for the same reasons-it just took a big turn whenever their coach started dogging on osu and noone gave osu a chance b/c yes, the media HAD hyped up st joes a LOT. thats all you ever saw. and while osu has had several quality teams and multiple Final 4s, this was definitely a memorable team for me b/c they never seemed out of a game-but outsider looking in i can see where youre coming from
I still cringe when I see OKSU make that shot. No discredit to the Cowboys, but man, the Hawks were that close. There will never be a team like that one.
can anyone tell me wat john lucas III is up to now? i know he was cut by the thunder at the beginning of the season but i have no idea about right now
Can't tell ya what hes doing but Jameer Nelson was an NBA allstar before he was injured and Delonte West starts for the Cavs. In case you dont know they were SJU's stars the ones that deserved to win this game. 6.9 seconds away. THWND!
yeah but Saint Joes just had it. Wit OST or wtf you call it it was just another BCS school Saint Joes had special sumthing and ten yrs from now I'll tell mi kids i saw Jameer Nelson and 60 yrs from now i'll tell mi grandkids. Ppl from SJU will remember that yr Oklahoma st really won't as much. That SJU season changed my life
You got to be kidding. As an Oklahoma St. grad, I can tell you that us OSU fans will remember this for a long, long time. This team was the first team to win the Big XII/Big 8 title straight up in close to 40 years. And I'm not taking anything way from y'all, but don't come around here and trash this special Cowboy team just because you guys lost in the last 6.9 seconds.
it looks like everyone id tslking about osu and what they did that year, but how about sju...such a small school did things that not many teams have done it before...perfect season....and keep in mind that probably not many people knew about them untill they beat bob knights team and wake forest. noone thought that they deserved to get first place and not many thought that they actualy will go that far. noone thought that it will come down to the last second for osu to beat them. good job sju..
i picked oklahoma state 2 win this game & really wanted 2 c it b/c i felt St. Joe's & Jameer Nelson had been so disgustingly overhyped that year by ESPN. so y was i overjoyed by john's shot & equally down 4 St. Joe's loss??? lol.
@htownhomie06 HA completely agree... St.Joe's was SO overhyped that year. Pokes deserved to win this game and should have beaten Ga Tech if it wasn't for that damn Will Bynum. Oh well, he sucks now in the league...
How can you say St. Joes was overhyped that year? Before the OSU game, they lost 1 game and it was in the conference tournament. I understand that the A10 is not the ACC or other big conferences, but it is very impressive to go underfeated in the regular season when conference rivals are gunning for you each and every game. They even made it to the elite 8 and they would have made it to the final four if Lucas didn't make that clutch shot.
I was at that game and still get the chills watching this highlight. One of the best games I have ever been to in my life though I really wanted SJU to win. Did anyone actually want Oklahoma State to win that game?
I wanted St. Joe's to win this game so badly, I was just glad that St. Joe's beat Wake Forest to shut Billy Packer up. OSU was straight up money with that clutch shot. Then the cowboys lost a tough one to Georgia Tech, and then in 2005 lost a tough one to Arizona.
good god one of the great moments in Osu sports and i have a squat on here ripping our play by play guy.and i actually rooted for you guys this year because Capel is a class act and the St. Joes coach is a prick!!
Just as cool was Nelson's shot right after that. Bobik got a finger on the shot to slightly alter the path and save the game. After the game Bobik said the scouting report was going through his mind: If Nelson has the ball in his left hand, then he is going to drive to the hoop. If it is in his right hand, then he is going to shoot. Nelson had the ball in right hand so Bobik went for the block.
This generation are all haters. Back in the day in the glory days of the big five, if you're team(Nova or St. Joe or Temple or La Salle or Penn didn't make it you always pulled for your fellow Big Five schools. it's not just Nova fans it's just all around it's about my school not the Big Five. It's a shame. We have the greatest place in the USA to watch a basketball game-the Palestra.
You can thank Macnow and Cataldi at WIP for that. They have bashed Nova continuously for years. Created a lot of bitterness. Now Nova is good and these 2 idiots want to suck up to them.
This was started before Macnow and Cataldi went on WIP. Most of the blame relies on one arrogant Rollie Massamino and the President of Villanova in 1991. They wanted out of the Big 5 round robin. It left a bad taste in the other schools mouths. I'm glad Nova in 1999 decided to go back to the big five round robin. Kudos to Jay Wright for being both a Nova coach and a Big 5 guy.
And don't forget "The Cuz" Anthony Gargano. That guy is a Temple grad which is fine but when St. Joes was going undefeated in 04 he rooted for St.Joe over his alma mater because he wanted them to be undefeated. Rhea Hughes a Temple grad and of WIP strongly disagreed to her credit rooted for Temple over the Hawks. I'm sure if Temple had a decent team that year he would not have done that. What a front runner. I don't think he would have done that for Villanova if they were going undefeated.
Temple wanted out just as much as Villanova did. They ended up building an arena bigger than the Palestra. Nova joined the Big East at the right time. They had no way of knowing how quick it would grow into a powerhouse conf. Whole mindset had to change. Recruits were not coming to Nova to play Big Five Round robin games. Sorry some people cant or won't understand this. Don't forget, Nova students cheered at the announcement that Rollie had left and started chanting Walking Rebels to mock UNLV.
Wrong. Temple wanted Big Five games at their own arenas not out of the round robin, The proof??? Look at games from 1992 -99. Temple still played 4 Big Five teams a year and even though only two of them were considered "Big Five" games. When Nova was playing 2 big five games a year those 2 or three teams they substituted were donkeys. During the Massamino era at least they played tough teams in December which no other Big East team did.
@jaytf123 What has Phil done since 2004? How long does he get a free ride? If I were a St. Joes fan/alum, I would be annoyed- he always seems to seek the spotlight. Macnow and Cataldi will always kiss his ass, but how much more can SJU fans take?
@jaytf123 Question: Why do so many Villanovans have sore backs? Answer: years of carrying the Big 5 have taken their toll.
Temple has a 10000 seat arena that they rarely sell out. Interest in Lasalle is nonexistant. Any city series game not involving Nova generates little to no interest. Maybe for once, people should look at the other 4 schools to see what is wrong, instead of just blaming Nova.
I'm a St. Joe fan as you can figure out and we play all of our A-10 home games at the Fieldhouse not the Palestra. However if it were up to me I would make it a state law that all Big Five games be at the Palestra. Just 4 games a year for the 4 schools besides Penn whose home court it is. Play the other games any where you want. Just keep the Big Five games at the Palestra. I remember when you guys cheered the Massamino announcement. I thought it was classless considering what he had done 4 u.
the following is a list of dicks pop pop shady has sucked in the past year alone: phil martelli, marvin oconor, jameer nelson, delonte west, czech stakitus, everyone else on that 2004 team, and of course BILLY PACKER aka the guy who was right about st. joes god that team was such a fraud
Fraud? They were a 3-pointer away from making the Final Four! In fact, the A10 was a combined FIVE POINTS away from sending TWO TEAMS to the Final Four!
you talking about a guy said wahy the valley didn't deserved i think 6 teams in the tournament last yera and tw teams went to the sweet 16 and he's a tool off the camera, st joe had a hell of a good team that year, i had them going to the final 4
How can you not have liked this team if you're from the Philly area. They were a hell of a team who deserved the No. 1 seed.(If they had a got a 2 that would have been ok) Two NBA stars(Nelson and West) and another who was drafted(Dwayne Jones.) And they lost to a damn good OSU team who had 4 players drafted I believe.
@jaytf123 You're right, a couple still playing pro. It was an classic game, and made St. Joe's supporters out of more than one Cowboy, I was so impressed with this bunch.
