I read what you wrote about the difficulties of shooting the video... with that said, that makes this a great video. Thanks for sharing this with the world :-)
Interesting that it's Masai. But, would it be possible to film it again, holding the camera still, and staying out of the way of the person with the colored cloth who gets in the way? I'd like to see it clearly.
No, you have got to be kidding. That was a once in a lifetime trip for me. Masai are cynical and suspect anyone taking a photo of being a professional photographer and making tons of money at their expense. They extort money out of you before you enter the village and again when you try to leave. I was trying to hide the fact I was recording with my compact camera while people were bumping into me. Warriors move fast and jump around often making a clear steady shot very difficult.
Oh, okay. Well congratulations on getting it on film. Too bad they're skiddish. I guess they don't know how much actual video gets shot in the world and how little of it is for profit. Their technique looks the same as that used elsewhere in the world. But they might think it's special to them. It is rare that people nowadays don't have matches or a lighter, though, or a battery and some steel wool.
They moved their hands so fast it looked like they could be manual hand drill. We tried rubbing the stick and the stick would either fall out of our hands or stop before it realy got started. It is a coordinated tag team effort to get the fire started fast.

and these are a certain type of sticks or regular sticks u find on the ground?
Otterfreak1 2 years ago
you gotta gently blow on it i think. (when you are trying to make the fire larger, AFTER you rub the sticks) cool vid tho.
linkrulessonicsux 2 years ago
u blow on it to allow more oxygen to touch the fire, which makes it ignite
soccerlvr8221 2 years ago
OH ok. i just didnt know how it really worked, but i knew these was some blowing involved.

Yes, the video is jumpy on a Canon Powershot SD900. I am trying a Canon Powershot SD960 now. Cannot expect much quality from point and shoot camera.
