There are 4 variations that have been seen on screen. The first was drapped across Spock's casket in The Wrath of Khan. The second was the one seen in TNG'S The Fist Duty [where the insignia is fuller]. The third and last are similar except for one difference. Some say UNITED FEDERATION of PLANETS, while the others have all capital letters. The reason I say this flag is wrong is that when Take Me Out To The Holosuite was seen, the last flag I mentioned was used. This flag was never used.

A very astute observation and interesting point. But it can be answered quite easily. In reality, it is done for the viewere benefit. In the Trek universe, english is Federation standared. Why is that? Most likely because of Earths role in it's foundation. It is still an excellent point, one that should be considered for a story. As there are very few elements of Trek that address such issues. Alas in my humble opinion, I just feel it looks better with it.

Possibly. However, part of my cringing is not only that, but simply from a vexillological standpoint - the standard rules of vexillology clearly state that a flag should never have writing of any sort on it. The flag itself should identify a nation, and clarification by writing should not be necessary. Of course, many real nations do not follow this rule, but still, I would disagree with the English being there - unless, of course, there is a variant for every language in the Federation :)

I agree with you 100%. However, if you look back at the very first Federation flag {as seen on Spock's casket in The Wrath Of Khan}, there were many that thought it was The United Nations flag. It was intentional to make them look similar. So Federation standard was added to clear up any confusion.
